Q:

30 Calibers Bobcat vs Cricket vs Matador

I think we know enough about the initial offerings to prompt a discussion of which one we might prefer and why. Even if you don’t plan on purchasing one I would be interested in your thoughts on a selection process in case I am missing something. All three seem to be in the $2100-2200 US price range. They all seem to be in relatively the same power range (75-89 FPE) although some may be more easily tunable than others. There are so many other things to consider…… Triggers, barrels, looks, weight, size, accuracy, support, previous experience, manufacturer, OEM vs. dealer customized, loyalty, availability, features (magazines, adjustments, safety, etc.), etc…

So which one do/would you want and why? 🙂

Is the price about $2,000? Any idea of when they may arrive?

Thanks,
Brant

There’d be a few .30s based on the waiting list.

I think they are single shot rather than R3Ms.

Tony,

I purchased a Matador standard .25 from you last April. I am wondering if there will be any standard length 30 cal R3Ms available in the upcoming shipment? Ed made it sound like there might be a few extra but that was a while back.

Thanks,
Brant

Tony said yes. Single shot though.

November for the R3M shipment, not the 30 cals right? 😮

Well Syn was pretty close to reality – a wise man. From what I hear now from AOA – they will get a bunch (maybe 15) of 30 cal Bobcats (and other calibers) in a few weeks but 30 cal Matadors and Crickets are less clear on the timeline. It may be November for Matadors in the US according to Tony but Crickets are up in the air at the moment waiting for barrels. 😐

Well I didn’t find it in a quick search. Was that $2050 for the 30 cal Single shot Matador then? I think the multi-shot may be quite a ways off like Syn. New year – new bonus. 🙂

As Donnyfl pointed out to me, the quieter NC shroud and custom tune to customer specs kind of negates any price difference I think. I realize some of the folks with singing fat ladies next door will need them even quieter but I bet you could make that part of a Cricket deal as you buy it.

My wife’s new car purchase leverage is really starting to wane since it is a few months old so I need to move sooner than later. 😀

Considering two of the three (Don’t know diddly about the EdGun):
Keep in mind that the Cricket does not have a two-stage trigger or a safety. However, it’s easy to de-cock the hammer spring (can’t misfire) for better safety AND have the magazine set to manual advance or auto/advance with each cocking. This magazine choice of auto vs. manual advance is a GREAT feature:pellets at the ready but you choose how they load.

The trigger on the Cricket is super smooth. The slightly longer travel means fewer premature shots.

If you hunt a lot, it’s always good to have a magazine. I don’t care how good you are, sooner or later, you’re going to need a second shot quickly. Either the shot misses the mark (animal suddenly moves, pellet imperfection, wind, operator miscalculation especially at odd distances) or there’s a second squirrel/animal behind the first. You want that wounded animal staggering off or do you want to dispatch it quickly with a second, quick shot? I do a lot of pest control, we’re talking hundreds of squirrels a year. Three days ago, I got twenty with the FX Royale, in about four and a half hours. I’d always go with the magazine, unless competitive target-shooting. (Post and shoot, I go with long guns; travel a lot with many posts, go with the shorties.)

The FX mag does not let you load the mag without inserting a pellet because the first pellet holds the mag spring and the spring rotates until another pellet is positioned. So, you need to shoot into something to decompress the hammer and clear the pellet for safe transport. You can leave an empty chamber in the Cricket mag and insert it such that it’s safely not chambered.

The cheek piece on the Cricket needs modification. Mine came with just the rectangular steel block (load/advancing mechanisms) for a cheek weld, crap. Easy to modify, but crappy. I see a wooden piece for a cheek rest on one of Ernest’s Crickets, but have not heard back from Steve at WW Airguns if this can be obtained. The FX gives you a better, adjustable cheek positioning.

I needed a hunting tool in real time for bad rodent problems. I went with the Cricket. I don’t mind the FX mag’s “Must chamber a pellet” system when I’m keeping still. But, bouncing around in a utility vehicle, it’s nice to know the mag is ready for action but there’s no way the gun will misfire 😉 Plus, the accuracy, at least of the .25 Cricket, is excellent. I doubt it will be long before the .30 is added to the collection.

I haven’t seen any 100 to 150 yard groups for the BC either…

The 30 cal accuracy test have been at distances I shoot my 177 at.

I don’t want to claim conspiracy but it’s shaping up to be one real quick like.

Do you have any idea on what the production runs will be in the Crickets. I got my 177 Cricket from WW. :thumb:

:1:

No conspiracy going on I think it maybe that there is only 3 maybe 4 of the 30 cal bobcats in the USA the 3 owners I know of are active on the forums not sure where # 4 is .. And mine has been at Aoa waiting on a stock. So that leaves 2 .30 cals left. They are expecting a shipment in about 2 weeks so I will get mine back then and I will stretch it out and post.

FX Boss 46 grain

Which pellet are you using?

Resting on a single bag at 65 yds

sitting on ground resting on knee at 90 yds.

I emailed Steve and he said the NC shroud adds another $150 so $2350 w/ shroud to the 30 cal Cricket w/ custom tuning. With the Bobcat at $2100 here in the US there is beginning to be a bit of a differential. Anyone have a good price on the 30 cal Matador?

Thanks!

I need to talk to Peter/Steve to see if price included the shroud—> it should be to me anyway, its to loud without it. 15+ on the list and nobody put a deposits down–> to me that’s TALK THE TALK move. If you do order one you have to indicate at what FPE you desirer, it take tins of pellets to set the speed, I mean the 1st shot has to be thigh within 2 to 4 fps in 5min, 15min, 30 min, 2 hours and the next day. Because in hunting the 1st shot is the most important in hitting the pray. Also need to talk to Neil to order more CF tube, soon as I have the barrel in hand will take the OD of the barrel and give it to Neil.

The Edgun next year is ok. That is another budget year. 🙂

quote synopsys:

I say one year minimum before anyone sees the EdGun 30 in this country and at least six months before the Cricket is shipping in a proper manner.

So that really leaves one that is ready now… But, is the Bobcat in 30 even available right now? 😕

So Ernest… It appears the 30 cal Cricket will come with the LW barrel and be custom tuned to the customer specs (within the operating range and trigger?). Will it come with the NC stripper as well like your prototype? Will they all be walnut skeleton stocks (which I would want 🙂 )? Do you know if there is much of a waiting list (I know this is an unfair question)?

quote sniperlabyo:

Here’s the .30 cal Cricket with its own Neil CF shroud 35.5″ TOL, just as quiet as the .25. Even made a single shot mag for the new owner. Don’t ask there is a conflict who getting it, I’ll even take it no issue with me. next week I’ll be tuning the .30 cal with the LW barrel and more to follow. She settled down to 87 FPE and vary consistent shot string.

Ernest
