410 Woodwork
Given that I have a surplus of stocks for my 410 I’ve been toying with the idea of doing this so I can have a better cheek weld when using a NV scope.
Been wondering the best (easiest) way of doing this since I traded a newer beech with an older one without the rosewood caps on the pistol grip’s. Finally came to me today – break it down into triangles. And no, I wouldnt do it this way if I wasnt going to be using bedliner after…
Made a simple jig from a 2×4 and run the flat side of the forearm agaisnt it so cut off the entire comb.
Then with a trusty miter saw I’ve never used since wife brought it home I cut the ends off.
The ends will be bonded back to the stock with a filler peice to bring it up to the level it was before the saw took away material.
This is how it looks until I get around to making the metal adjustment parts.

Takes some balls to make that first cut but it’s going to look badass when you’re done. Really nice job dude!
Filled and sanded the stock to give s smooth transition –
Sprayed with bedliner – The filler took the bedliner differently than the wood which I expected, hopefully a second coat will fix that.
While I’m waiting for that to dry I started anodizing the aluminum parts. Just using a Gell Cell battery because it can provide the current I need for a fraction of the cost of a Charger or Power supply.

why did you not just make the initial cut piece the cheek weld ?
instead of chopping off the end pieces.

Slight change of plan. Decided to just make a plate to screw onto the cheek peice.
Used scrap I had laying around, one end of the round bar was used to hold something when it was being painted which is why it has black paint on it. Will take that off later.
That inserts into the two holes I drilled in the stock
I still need to machine aluminum sleeves which will be epoxied into the stock for the rods to slide up and down in. I epoxied the front and rear finish peice with a strip of wood to bring it up to the old height that was lost from saw blade. Still need to biuld up the gap with epoxy and sand it.
Just used some tape to attach the cheek peice to the plate for now while its attached to the rifle so I could see what height to cut the rod off at.
Column will be epoxied into the cheek peice, extend a couple of inches into the stock and will be retained by a set screw. So it wil be adjusted by loosening the two set screws on the side of the stock and moved up/down by hand and then set screws tightened. Set screws will be in their own horizontal threaded aluminum shaft and the column extends into a vertical aluminum shaft – both epoxied into stock.
I went to draw a picture in solidworks of the adjustments but I guess I dont have it on this PC.
If this was my only stock theres no way I’d have done this. I wish I had a scroll saw – then I could have made a jig to hold it at 90 degree’s and just cut the shape freehand without having to glue stuff back.

I havent really thought about doing that to mine, but I bet I could to it with my scroll saw. Just make sure its attached solid to the jig before I start, ect…
How do the metal pillars get locked in place? Are there setscrews going up from the bottom? Thru the side?

That’s going to look bad ass. A tip, when you think you have sanded the ‘re-joints’ to flush well enough, keep sanding… The bedliner will still show most imperfections.
Hope to have it finished by Saturday.
