Q:

accuracy probs

hey guys, was wandering if ya’ll can help me with a lil accuracy problem…

when i shoot targets that are straight head to head such as 180 degrees… its dead on accurate…but when i shoot targets that are 45 degrees or higher i can see the pellets going a bit higher…

can anyone tell how i can fix this or tell me what im doing wrong…

i have a nikko stirling scope 6-24×56

This is why Crack Military Sniper have to study their craft.

It is more pronounced in Air Gun shooting than power burners due to the more pronounced arch.

In archery it is eve pronounced.
In our old Archery shop, we use to sell a sight that automatically corrected for this. But I never personally owned one. I like the KISS system best of all. There is a lot to be said for Keep It Simple Stupid!

If the target is high in a tree, guess the distance from you to the base of the tree. Not the distance to the bird. Now shoot!

In Three D archery competitions, we use this a lot. When I was competing, I was one of the top ranked shooters in the State. It works. “Remember the force Luke!” 😀

Yes you can use mathematical formulas and they will be correct. But how many people go hunting with a pen and paper or calculator! And if you did. You wouldn’t have time to use it! That’s why “KISS”. It is one aspect of the Kentucky windage skills that shooters in this country at one time were so famous for. At one time, American Frontiersmen were considered the best in the world! Just ask the British! Sadly, in todays world, these skills are not only lacking, if you do practice them you are considered a Left wing whack-o! 👿

I aim up at a target. If the pellet goes lower or higher I make the compensation. It takes exactly one shot to find out if I need to aim higher or lower.

I know it is complicated but I tend to do things the hardest possible way. 🙄

Wheres the gadget and how much does it cost…. 😆

anywase i went hunting with my friend and he has this cheap walmart pump pellet gun with a scope that came with it…anywase he doesnt have the problem that i have with my gun…with his gun it doesnt matter if the target is high or low, aim in the center of the crosshair and it will hit the target…

therefore, whenever i shoot at birds for examples on trees i have to aim a few dots above the center of the cross hair on my condor…if the target is close IE 25 meters, i have to aim a dot above the center crosshair…buti if the target is 50+ meters i have to aim 3 or 4 dots above the center crosshair…

i just dont understand why this doesnt apply to my friends scope…

As I understand it…

Nearly all bullet drop algorithms assume perpendicular gravitational forces on a
projectile. Given that the projectile is in trajectory other than perpendicular to
gravitational forces, those forces act differently on the projectile.

The deceleration of the projectile at angles > 45 degrees is subsequently
different than that of a horizontal trajectory; with deceleration slightly less at
the beginning of the trajectory arch – while speeding up and surpassing the
horizontal rather quickly thereafter (especially so in lower velocities).

Given that deceleration is less at the beginning of the arch, your rifle’s optics
are now no longer ‘correct’ as nearly all sight-in is done on the horizontal plane
and you must account for that deviation – as your projectile will impact slightly
higher.

Other things to factor-in when shooting are air density and windage. They too
will have an increasing affect on the projectiles trajectory with severity.

For close shots, the rule is > 45 degrees up, shoot low; while > 45 degrees
down, shoot high. As with anything, practice, practice, practice. It’s best to
test the POI (point of impact) at varying velocities and projectiles. Make
notes. Follows your notes (and gut).

And… HAPPY HUNTING!!

When a pellet leaves your gun in the horizontal position it travels in an arch like this http://www.arld1.com/trajectory.html when you aim up or down at angles the pellet fly’s in more of a straight line. There fore essentially cutting the distance the pellet has to fly to reach it’s target.

Aim a little lower and you should see improvement.

Shoot using the horizontal distance for holdover calcs and adjustment.
ie if you shoot at 45 degrees the Cosine of that is .707 so a target 100 yards away will require a 70.7 yard zero.
