anyone shooting a 257 with a extreame valve from r and l
All Replies
Well Knife, Doug, Old Goat, and 80 Grit, I might just be begging for some slugs to test soon. I got one of my Christmas presents, a new R&L valve, which seems a bit hot for all the 22 pellets I’ve tried so far. Tomorrow will be the 25 cal tests, but I have a suspicion a 257 barrel is on it’s way. Once I find the slugs it like, hoping they will be the lighter weight hollow points that you Knife milled you mold down to. That way when I order my mold, I’ll just send it to whom ever I need to have the milling, and hollow point work down up front. See you guys are turning me into a complete addict. First a Talon SS, then another with one of Tony’s valves, spare tank, hammers, springs, yep I completely hooked, and I see some Yotes going down here in the very near future.

O’l Roach is over in the Phillipn’s on a 6 month vacation. Lucky Bastid! He was going to Tiland, Tiwan and a few other places. Makes me hungry just thinking about it!
I picked up a 5 hole mold from NOE recently. Havent’ decided whether I am gonna mill it or not. I’ve cast with it ONCE. LOL. The 4 holer that is already milled to throw the 60 grainers just works so well!
Yep, Blew a Squirrels Head clean off just a couple of weeks ago. Sure did make for a good pot of Dumplings! 😀

Tof, I did a search, and it seems I’m a brick head sometimes, it was in one of he 257 pages, and had just the info I was looking for about temps. Need to finish reading the whole thing, so I understand the casting process. Been searching for a mold, might have found an older Ideal single, that might be just the ticket to have milled down to the 60 grain range. Knife your right, it will be addictive, I started out with a cheap springer, then the 22xx series madness, then came the Talon SS. That did it, the first time I smacked a tree rat in the head at 70 yards sealed the deal. I guess the 257 would have just taken his head clean off!
This is a great thread, and we are finding out what to expect when mixing different makers valves, fill pressures, and bullet weights. I also give a huge shout out to Roach, when ever he decides to check in again, as he really helped push many of us in the cast bullet direction.

Casey, Your gonna be in serrious trouble my friend. As in HOOKED!!! These .257’s are the Sh*t I tell ya!

Casey,
No problems BUT, what part of RC’s casting are your referring too? There is a section in red letter already there as quoted by him. But if that’s NOT it, and you can find the post, i will copy and past it to that page.
Time to update that page anyways. More info is already here. So little time………….so much info 😆
Ok, I’m getting really jealous of you guys, I have put the 257barrel, and at least an R&L valve on my Christmas list. I would love one of Doug’s valves, just depends on what she will spend on me! 😀 At any rate, I have been following the development of this caliber, Tof’s 257 page, and any info I have been able to glean form the TAG. I remember a post from Roachcreek about casting, Tof, maybe we could add that content to the 257 page? I’m may start with just an iron pot, thermometer, dipper, mold, and sizer. I can always get a nice casting pot later, plus once I have the handles, and a mold or two, I can add the 45acp, 9, and 10 mm, maybe a few others, and save even more, or just shoot more.

I don’t know really. I went to a lighter bullet to get the trajectory looking good, but much lighter and the B.C. may very well suffer. Meaning It may very well drop faster at longer ranges, and the wind will push it around more. And we have a LOT of wind in Texas! 😯
In fact, I have a 5 ganger NOE 80 gr. mould that I picked up just for shooting in higher winds. 😉 😆 , but having too much luck with teh 60 gr NOE to bother with it right now. 😀 Right now, I’m side lined as my valve stem snapped. It was an older design by Dyotat100. It shot very well, but was a bit weak. Doug has since beafed up the desigh.
It may take a while to get a Gun from Doug, But he sure takes care of his customers. I called him last week, and he said he would machine a new one over the weekend. Now folks, That Is TOP NOTCH! You just can’t beat that!
😉 😀

at what point do you think the ammo will be too light? I know the heavy enjuns are 43 ish grains.
I milled the base of of my .257420 mold and picked up another 100+ fps. Man it shoots good! 😯 😀 It weighs in at right at 54 grains now, and the milled down .257 NOE 80 grain bullets come in at 60 grains. (59.4) now. I can launch them around 930 with one spacer under the top hat. So it can go faster, but shot count would go down to match.

I am glad that the 257420 is stable at 830 fps.
Glad to hear you guys having so much luck with the 257. Well, Knife, I know your happy for sure….lol! But JHUNTER, i’m really glad your gun is coming along. I’m not quite sure about R&L’s 257 setups so its really hard to trouble shoot someones stuff that im not familiar with. But it sounds like your rig is coming right along now
CONGRATS!
I pour the contents of the bucket onto a tarp I put on top of the pick-nick table and just pick the bullets out by hand. It doesn’t take long at all. 😉
The only problem I ran into, is that the mulch that lowes and homedepot sells is different. One is very fine, and the other much corser. The fine catches the bullets much better, but is 10 bucks a bag, and the couse stuff is 5 bucks a bag. I can’t remember which place sells which type. I ended up mixing it before putting it in the buckets.
The lids that ends up being used for the target area gets shot up, but they sell the lids for under 2 buck, so it is a very cheap way to go. And the buckets haveing handles, makes for easy carrying to and from the range. A Win-Win! 😀
I was supprised that the fine mulch stops the bullets in the shortes distance. Not one reached the back (Bottom) of the bucket at all. It really does a great job, and it is QUIET! Ya gotta Love-it!
On a side note, I shoot mostly at 80 yards on my range. Yesterday, I had a squirrel perch himself on top of the bucket. Would you believe I’m having Squirrel and Dumplings tonight? 😆 some people like the head, I don’t but I couldn’t find it anyway.
Love that NOE FlatPoint Bullet! 😀
Knife
How do you separate the rubber mulch from the lead? Thanks
It really is un-real just how well these things shoot in .257! 😀 Screw pellets. 👿
And since I made two pellet (bullet) traps out of 5 gal. paint buckets from Lowes, and filled them with rubber mulch, I can shoot damned near free! 😀 I lay the buckets on their sides, and staple the targets on the lids. The recovered bullets look almost good enough o shoot again and it is a simple matter to reclaim them and cast a new batch.
Never thought I would be re-cycling.
Woo-Hoo, shooting a gun and being all Green and shit. 😆 The left is gonna love this one. 😆 😈

Wish one of my molds were hp’d. Eric at hollow point service is the man for doing the hp work. And I’ll bet he would have no problem milling the mold down first. (If it is hp’d with his unique system, it will have to be milled down first.) It works much better than the removeable pin with a knob way of doing it.
Google Hollow point service. Good Stuff! He did the work for both RC and Tof. 😉
