Q:

Bad Accuracy After Barrel Swap

Hi,

I bought a Talon SS in .177 and I also got a .22 barrel for it.
My question for you is, what is the rubber disk that came with the spare barrel and how is it properly installed with it?
When I was swapping barrels the old black rubber disk fell out with the barrel. Since the change neither barrel is holding accuracy.

My .177 barrel was holding dime sized groups at 45 yards, and now it is hardly holding a 2.5 inch group at 45 yards,
and the same goes with the .22 barrel. I KNOW these are accurate rifles, so could someone please give me some DETAILED
instructions on how to change a barrel properly in case I have done it wrong?
I have watched the instructional DVD that came with the gun a few times and checked the barrel changing section of it
to double check my work, but I seen nothing (or maybe I missed it) on that small rubber disk.

Also, when I do get a decent 1 inch 5 shot group, it will almost always start shooting strays and the groups open back up to
2 or 3 inches regardless of any pellet I use. This has only been happening after the barrel change, with both the .177 and .22 barrel.

The groups tighten up at 10 yards, but the farther away the worse it gets. At 60 yards I got the same results as posted above.
Good 5 shot group, and then strays and 2 or 3 inch groups start happening. The gun is showing me potential, but it’s not sustaining
even though I know the gun can.

Pellets used during my trouble shooting where as follows
.22 Kodiak 21.14 GR
.22 Crow Magnum 18.21 GR
.22 RWS Meisterkugeln 14 GR
.22 JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy 18.13
.22 JSB Diabolo Exact 14.3 GR
.177 RWS Superpoint 8.2 GR
.177 Crosman Destroyers I think around 8 GR

PS: Is the Talon SS Weatherproof? I don’t want to get caught in bad weather during a hunt and walk out of the woods with a knackered gun.

Much appreciated,
-Jeff

Here is my set up

Fill 2400

Top hat .106″ no oring

Power wheel 3-12

21g pellets

700fps

Try something is this area

I do not have a chrony and I’ll snag a measurement tomorrow. Each group was at a 3,000 PSI fill. My Air Tank is brand new so I would imagine it’s still the same factory setting? I’ll still double check it. ;D

What is the optimal gap it should be at mate?

quote airgunsoftulsa:

what are your:

fill to pressure

top hat gap

And do you have any chrony numbers.

Yeah, JSB does make a 14. something weight.

Shoot some pellets into water so you can look at them….

anything less than perfect rifling on the head and skirt is trouble.

Yes sir. I checked the bushing screws and made sure they are snug. I’m going to swap out that barrel ASAP. Only .177 pellets I have are those destroyer EX’s and the RWS super points. =\
I’ll phone up airforce as well and see what they say. I put a thin layer of silicone lube on the breach o-rings and it didn’t do very much for the accuracy issue for the .22 barrel. I used Kodiaks and JSB 18.1’s at 50 yards. Groups are still way to big. 2.5 – 3″ inches. =\

did you check the screws on the barrel bushings not the ones that hold the barrel in the frame of the gun but the one that hold the bushings on the barrel???

And I’m on Power level 6. I heard performance drops if rounds start screaming out of the barrel.

Cool beans bud I will give it all a try tomo. About the 14.3 GR JSB’s I have….
I ALSO have a tin of the 18.1 Gr JSB’s I’ll give a try tomorrow. I have seen what this gun can do, so I know there is an issue outside of my possibly bad shooting. ;D

I know this may sound unorthodox..crazy, stupid perhaps.

So, I’m in my area of expertise.

1st, I would put the little .177 barrel back in and see if groups tighten up.
It only takes 15min, so you know its a barrel problem.

2nd..now the stupid part..
Return the barrel, or hit that sucker lightly with some polishing compound, rubbing compound (the car stuff) has seen one of my barrels. There must be some burr or crap in that barrel, your groups at 70 should be a few inches..not all over like yours…Many can do 1″ groups

PS jsb’s are the pellet to use !!!! Also if you are shooting at 2000fps..slow it down, start around 900fps

Also..jsb does not make a 14.3gr….22jsb is 15.9 or 18.1..what u shooting?

I’m sure, like me, we that have viewed your post are a bit stymied at to what the problem is. LW barrels aren’t known to do this.

mrnewbie is right about doing the swap barrels thing.

BTW JSB DOES make 14.3g pellets

They shoot OK

The guns got a lifetime warranty. Contact Airforce, explain what is happening and maybe they could offer some ideas. Ask them what is involved with sending it in to have it checked out. l’ll bet they have seen it all.

Keep us updated on what you find out.

Same test using Kodiaks. The third shot of the first group hit the dirt. These groups make me want to sell this gun. Haha

35 and 70 yard groups with 0 wind. Just a cool 25 degree day.
A note on the 70 yard group…. The last 2 shots hit low and in the dirt. Both groups where tested off of a 3,000 PSI fill.

Yeah im in se wisconsin

Hey, I’m on the southern side about 15 minutes from STL mate. You are up past Chicago?
