Q:

big-bore springers?

Make a long story short http://www.airgunadvice.net/viewtopic.php?t=15334 caught this post from a newbie asking about .25 cal HW80.

Well I had to nicely tell him not be silly. Just because the manufacturer is putting a larger barrel on a 17 cal power plant does not mean it is right. I tried to explain it.

Next thing you know the usual butt-heads come in with their 2 cents and their stories about 100 yard shooting with HW50s 😀

And we wonder why they sell us smooth twist barrels?

I thought we are supposed to teach people the right airgun principles.

You try to explain something to people that bigger caliber is sure is good provided you have that muzzle energy behind it.

I don’t get it… but I think airgun forums should be informative with the right information that teach people good, basic principles of airgunning and caliber selection.

Eh, let them shoot what they want. I’ve found most people only measure accuracy at 25 yards, I don’t…

This brings up another topic, Smooth Twist barrels. That’s how this crap gets born. First a company like Weihrauch slaps a .25 cal barrel on a springer like HW80. Then Gamo decides to make a plastic barrel assembly. Now FX is bringing in polished tubes.. And boy do they make them fast http://www.airgunshooting.co.uk/videos-details.aspx?id=192 (last few minutes of the video show it) This is pure example of bullshit. With all do respect to Ben Taylor.

This happens because there is this attitude on the forums of just let them shoot what they feel like.

Which leaves us with what? Complain in disbelief wtf is happening and an urge to make our own guns? I wish that was possible to hook up with some like minded people and start putting out stuff that is really needed – what airguns can achieve today.

But when some guy in the UK with 12fpe limits thinking of getting a .25 cal HW80 and people urge him on to that, they all need to be bitch slapped. (And I am sorry of the language) I just had to say it, because that is like trying to tow a large boat with a 4 cylinder car.

quote crowpopper:

xl725 will sling em at 730 fps for 26FPE

And you find that fast for the .25 cal?

When it comes to selecting a springer caliber compression chamber volume and piston stroke should be the determining factor. 🙂

To some people these basics are like snow in Africa.

LOL nice Syn If I could afford a nice PCP and setup to go with it I would
I am sure if I sold off all my stuff I could buy a nice set up but then I would have only 1 Gun
My wife graduates in may she is going to be an RN and will start at the hospital she works at $52000 a year befor OT if she is on 1st shift and $59000 befor OT if she is 3rd or 2nd 😈
I am already planning on buying a PCP of sorts
Maybe a 25 condor, maybe an Edgun
I dont know yet Plus I am REALLY liking the FX Indy!!
Until then I will Put my spare Duckins into the Cheaper guns I have and Lob heavy projectiles Mortar style LOL
but like I said If I really get the Itch for some power out comes the Encore in 460 where I am handloading my 300 grain Hornady XTP-Mag bullet and pushing them at just a tad shy of 2100 FPS and scoped this thing is Whitetail MOA at 250 yards and Lemme tell you when you pull the Trigger you almost bust a nut in your pants!!!!! Its that fun!

😆

I know I need all the help I can get, if I can find any advantage I will take it. Spent too much time trying to milk good results from equipment that “can” or “could” achieve what I was looking for. But no matter what I did I never really could get it to measure up to the “results” I heard about online…

Spent some time with an piece of equipment that was precise and could walk away knowing what I had to do to improve. I was amazed how much better my groups were with really good equipment. Often with other equipment i’d walk away wondering if I missed a tweak or a tune that would tighter the groups or velocities.

Eliminating the exterior variables to get what I want has been my biggest lesson. If I can’t blame the rifle I know I need to improve myself to get better.

Shitty fries will taste a little better with lots of catsup, but good fries don’t need to be drowned in tomatoes that weren’t fit for display in the produce isle. 😉

Did ya ever wonder why…?

Sorry, some sort of Andy Rooney flashback there!

That was triggered by the predictable re-emergence of numbers based conclusions that are not adjusted for other factors.

So many guys will jump out and say that nothing under 1100 or 1050 or 950 or 925 or 892 can ever be useful in the field and then you see a 891 fps gun blowing the shit out of targets or nailing a bag limit and what happens? Nothing, silence, nada, zip… A couple weeks later, the velocity guys are back like nothing ever happened and newbies are told that they will never kill anything from paper to godzilla without a gun that can shoot 1100 or 1050 or 950 or 925 or 892. Next week…wash, rinse, repeat.

Some guys focus on caliber. You just can’t kill anything bigger than a bee with a .177. It takes a .45 or better yet, a .58 to kill a yote. Then a guy shows one or several dead yotes shot with a .25 or .308 and…crickets. A couple weeks later and some newbie asks what it takes to kill a yote. Sure as shit, a whole body of expertise blows down about how you need a .45 or .58 or some inhumane debacle will follow and all airgunning will be killed off!

Other guys will scream bloody murder about their 1200 dollar Rapid being worth every penny but anybody that spends a nickel more is an idiot wasting money. 🙂

It never ends, and it’s either funny or tedious depending on how smart you think you are.

I know that I’ve been proven wrong on a number of things and there will probably be more in the future. I just hope that I’m being honest when I say that I’ve learned from my errors and not waited a week just to repeat them…

The Encore Precision Hand Cannon… 😆

I have the Traditions Buckskinner 50cal BP pistol, had to add a pound of steel to the base of the grip to balance out the barrel… 😀

Nothing like a big bad black powder kaboom and the massive cloud of smoke at the pistol range. 😆

my xl is shooting at 26-27 fpe the 25 is shooting ftt at 730 so its still hitting 14 fpe at 50 plenty for tree rats if i want 70 fpe i will grab my encore pistol in 460 S+W lol

My Talon would do 800fps but at 50 yards it’s not enough to make a decent group…

Compared to a muzzle velocity 1050fps or 70FPE it’s not acceptable…. 😈

They claim 16FPE at 50 yards, with 26 grain pellets… 😕 That’s sub 550fps at the target… 🙄

Can you say lob sandwich with a side of drop salad?! 😆

If it’s claimed it’s inflated, i’ve had a Crosman and even with super light pellets I couldn’t get the ‘claimed’ velocities…

xl725 will sling em at 730 fps for 26FPE

Eh, let them shoot what they want. I’ve found most people only measure accuracy at 25 yards, I don’t…

You were a bit rough on the newbie, usually the subtle approach goes a long way. I’m just learning that myself btw… 😳 😉

The 25 is impressive when pushed at the right speed. It certainly changed my mind about airgun calibers but since I don’t use my airguns to hunt I sold it all for a field target rifle.

I saw a springer do a 50 yard FT (3/8″ kz) shot on the first try a couple $3000 pcp rigs could only hit after a few tries… And I also saw a 14 yo girl out shoot the same rigs with a $600 pcp with mil dot holdover and no scope clicking…

Personally my Talon valve just didn’t do the trick with 30 grain 25cal pellets, but as I haven’t used a springer since I was 14 I don’t know what kind of output they have or if they could handle a 25 pellet with any force…

Once I switched to a Condor valve it was amazing at 50 yards, not as accurate as my 22lr but I only tried one pellet and it was pretty damn close… I’ve gone through five different 22lr rounds to get acceptable accuracy at 50 yards (5 shots in 0.3″ or less).

They locked the thread… 😆 You’ve been a bad boy. 😆

my rws 48 was a lazer in .22 cal weith the PG2 kit i installed. and my benji trail XL is an accurate hunter out to 50+ i am going to put a .25 bbl on it too. why? because i can and it seems like a fun time t sling 25’s down range

.25 springer is for those whose favorite sport is slow pitch soft ball.

that aside I would like a .22 springer for 30-50 yards, I think maybe a walnut stock HW35 for nostalgia.

.177 pellets what I give my daughter to shoot 😀
