Q:

Bizill’s Taipan Veteran (Pic HEAVY! Don’t quote first post)

This thread is a work in progress but for now, a chitty video of my nerdy ass…

I have yet to mount my scope and what not so I’ll be updating this thread whenever the heck I feel like it. I don’t have too much to say just yet as it’s new to me. Quality seems very nice, though the finish isn’t top notch, but still nice. I suppose it depends on what one considers top notch. Regardless, it’s nice enough. The cocking lever is smooth and I was pulling on it harder than was necessary, not knowing it would be so fluid. Thank God for this thing called leverage. I like it better than cocking a bolt. Still wish the side lever was further up near the trigger vs in the rear, but I knew what I was getting into. You see, I had my eyes set on the Vulcan, so I made a compromise. I’m thinking that will be one of the only compromises, though.

I love that it’s got the 20moa rail built in. That way I can just use regular scope mounts and not expensive ones with adjustable moa drop. I’ve seen many, to include FX Impact that have fugly lookin’ machined picatinny rails but this Veteran has nice machining. No worries there.

BRB. Stupid ass Windows is forcing a shutdown and restart on me….damn it! K, I’m back, that was quick. Thank God for SSD’s. They make for quick boot times on the ‘ole laptop.

Anyway, the stock isn’t terrible, though now I’m thinking the black completely conceals the woodgrain. I pretty much knew that going in but damn it to hell, if I don’t have to have my black guns. The shaping and working of the stock are nicely done. Even and not lop-sided or anything. I really didn’t know what to expect there. So I’m happy. I will however need to mount a small picatinny rail to the fore guard. That’ll make working on it so much easier since I don’t have a gun vice.

Before I get onto more points I would like to quickly add that I attached my Donny Du Sumo for a quickie shot to test it and by God, I thought my Benjamin P-rod with Rocker1’s LDC was quiet in .22. This Veteran .25 is quieter IMHO stock but with the Sumo is that much more quiet! I really didn’t know what to expect as I thought the Prod was pretty damned quiet. With much more power on tap, AND to be more quiet…well, I’m tickled pink. :4:

Below is just a pic for reference of the Sumo next to my Rocker1 LDC for my Prod.

Of course the Taipan LDC 1/2-20 adapter from TalonTunes to be able to mount the Sumo…

Though I haven’t seen the video, my 8 FPE Cricket can yield over 430 shots with an ES of 10 FPS from a fill range of 220 – 40 BAR. Of course, I had to tune the regulator, valve and hammer spring to achieve this.

Screw an entire day’s shooting session, you could almost kill a week with that many shots. Months if you tether to a 60 minute tank.

Yes sir! :smilen:

anything under 100 seems dull in comparison. A smallish yard and pests already taken care of, I need to find time to force a trip hunting.

Respectfully, this is why I powered down my Cricket to shoot at 8 FPE because I don’t have most of the AZ valley’s real estate at my disposal. I only have 28 yards at the max for backyard shooting and pest elimination. If you want it challenging again, try going backwards—shooting accurately at low power. And I can most certainly tell you, you’d have a significantly higher shot count from your rifle.

Cheers!

yeah… shot count matters, in the long run, economics and satisfaction too.

that is why I am drawn to the Taipan Veteran cal .22

have you seen that post on a 90 shot string on a single fill for the Taipan? and it was shooting hot at that.

I’m still what I consider new to the sport of airgunning, granted. But from what I’ve witnessed thus far, the sport/hobby is taking off like wildfire. (Sorry CA) I think in a few years’ time there will be more events. More people to meet that share in the hobby. More get togethers. Some people have that airgun shooter locator map link floating around and basically there is like 1 guy in my medium sized city and that’s all I know of some I’m a lonely mofo in these parts. Sure, I’m 2 hours away from AOA. Who gives a shit, I don’t work for them and don’t need to be sticking my nose up their asses. I’m down in Tucson. Look me up and hook it up with me.

Yes, I would enjoy more events myself. Now that I remember down in the Suburb of Green Valley they have an airgun club. But I don’t know how to get a hold of any members and only really want to meet up with folks from the various forums. Anyone else is a complete stranger so not like I’mma be all like, “yo, fellow airgunner, meet me in the desert and lets shoot at golfballs”. Hell, they’d think I was like a Craigslist ad gone wrong and only trying to lure them out to rob them and what not and consider me crazy. :4:

Hey Bizill
I know R&L had a fun shoot last year,
Be something to throw around,
Sure wish I had the space and place to host a shoot out.

maybe it is you who could introduce to the world that there is a Taipan other than FX Impact at the EBR event…

I thought about it as I’m a 2 – 2 1/2 hour’s drive away. I know nothing about EBR. I sorta would like to just go shoot for the 100 yard event in under an hour and then drive home. I’m not sure how they structure it. Don’t you sorta have to compete over the course of a few days? I don’t have money to be staying up there a couple days nor am I inclined to drive back ‘n forth. All I’d wanna do is simply go head to head against others in a challenge. I don’t care for any structure of competition such as this. Then stick around for awards.

Yeah, talk is cheap…but I’m not trash talkin’. I am saying I’d like to go head to head with the EBR fellas with my Taipan, just for fun. Maybe they’d smoke me, or perhaps I’d smoke them or there may be a draw. What I am confident of is that them other fellas could shoot a Taipan equal to or greater than their FX’s.

Oldie but Goodie review here. I’ve come a ways further with my Taipan Vet since my initial purchase. Of course I did the golfball challenge at 200 and 250 yards. Only reason I didn’t push it out further was the fact I had plum run out of elevation on my scope and rings setup.

I did tune my fps with 25.4 grain from like 820fps to 980 which was quite hot and will tune her back down with the twist of the fingers and adjustable HST knob to probably around 880fps. For the golfball 250 yard hit I was shooting 33.95grain at 880fps and that will obviously be tuned down as well. For my purposes there’s just no need to go that hot. I’d rather gain back some shot count.

This thing has performed flawlessly, as those who own them or have spent 2 seconds researching will undoubtedly already know. I don’t get to shoot as much anymore due to being busy and the fact that once you go 250 yards, anything under 100 seems dull in comparison. A smallish yard and pests already taken care of, I need to find time to force a trip hunting. Even if I don’t shoot it for awhile, I’m certain she’ll be ready to go when the time comes I need her, so long as the orings don’t dry out which wouldn’t be the fault of her own.

I don’t tend to sell guns but rather store them away, just like all my powder burners. It’s hard to part with any of them so I don’t. I’m looking for an excuse to shoot now. But one hole shot strings at 20 yards is no challenge…not for must guns but least of all this one.

Dissin’ Vets on Memorial Day…. :5:

Agreed, I like the names others have conjured up as well over the name Veteran, but it’s set in stone now and we cannot alter history. Well, except for revisionist historians.

Perhaps ya’ll ought to just give her/him a nickname. Maybe I’ll call my Vet “Mah Bitch!” Rather so call the dead squirrel “Mah Bitch’s Bitch”.

Or how about……

TV shorty = Taipan Veteran shorty.
Or
TV standard = Taipan Veteran standard

Oh some one stop me please.

I just went and read your whole post again, Wow I am impressed with the gun and its LOOKS,
I got the shorty coming from Tony also in .25 black
I almost pulled the trigger on the standard, But my shooting field shrank down to 48 yards, With 60 % of my shots at 38 yards.
I got the same scope as you sitting in the safe Athion 6-24×50 This FFP is going to be new to me.
I to like you, almost bought a Vulcan, The upper side cocking thing is over rated, When your used to the rear cocking lever .
Now I rotate my guns every week, But if a varmint shows up it seems I always reach for the 22 Mutant, If its a big varmint I reach for the 25 Cricket, That may change pretty soon.
Oh and Veteran/ Mutant all the same I think, I just like the Mutant name better than Veteran, I guess I need to call it the V Mutant,
Mike

Alright, I’ve since bought the Caldwell Magnum Fieldpod, UTG 360 bipod and got some JSB heavies 33.95gr pellets so I think I’ll have to start playing with HST or possibly in the future play with some internals. I know that’ll bring up the sound signature so I may give one of my Sumos to my son and try out either the Shogun or Ronin. Or perhaps the Sumo will suffice. I was mentioning on GTA that the Ronins and Shoguns are available in .25 and .30 and mentioned I didn’t need to upgrade but after looking at pics and specs, I’m just looking for an excuse to throw my money out into the economy yet again.

If I get around to playing with some light tuning, I’ll be updating this thread. I got a buddy just getting into powder burner long range and I might have to go out with him and get some real trigger time in. There’s only so much one can do in one’s own backyard. I envy those of you with land!

No, sir. I’m wanting to buck the wind on longer shots. In the shots above at 100 yards I faced zero wind. I’m not even sure the effects of wind on my 25.39 JSB’s in the wind as I haven’t gone out in the daytime yet. If the 25.39 do fare well against the wind then I want to purchase more from Pyramid instead of getting the 33.whatever grain pellets.

I’m gonna chalk it up to my chrony is good as I’m on target at 100 yards and I also had someone else tell me they encountered the same issue with their strings being lower than what was placed in the box from my man Tony. I’m not complaining, the difference in his shot string vs mine really threw me for a loop. But I’m very happy with what I have before me. I don’t know I’ll even be touching any HST.
