why, when you sight in on level ground your poi changes when you are shooting up/downhill???? do you aim high or low when shooting down/uphill???

I think you are all High.
Go outside. Put a target at the base of a tree 50 yds away. Shoot it. Notice were it hit in relation to your cross hair.
Now aim up the trunk of the tree at 30 and 45 degrees. Look through your scope and shoot. Notice where it hit in relation to your cross hair. What was the difference?
You will have the answer
I do this all the time while hunting because I tend to forget as well…lol

ie., if shooting at an elk uphill at 400 yards you would aim lower than normal, the bullet is subjected to less gravitaional pull because it is traveling less distance in relation to the surface of the earth or the earths core. And of course therre is a difference in how the organs that you wish to destroy are angled on an animal that is uphill.

ok… I get mixed up with hold over, shooting high etc all the time.
Basically I aim as if the target is closer than it is…
(Flight time is still not reduced tho…)
When I said you shoot high, I meant the shot strikes higher, not that you need to aim higher.
If the bulllet passes over the back of the elk, you shot high.

No, Pablo, I am saying the shot will strike high, because of the gravity. So you have to aim lower than you would for a level shot.

You not going mad Mam’ thats how I read it, that roach was saying you need to aim high for an elevated shot.
If its up in a tree/slope etc, you aim lower than you would if it was on a level with you.

No, whenever you have an incline, whether uphill or downhill, that shot will strike higher than shootine level.
I am not eloquent enough to explain it further, and you folks have the brains, I just read it and it made sence, but like I said the author suggested it was more involved, that was just a simple solution as to why.
And of course, just because it was in print in a major magazine does not make it gospel, as Joe would make us believe.

Of course your pellet strikes high, it was subjected to gravity less than if you shot the same distance horizonticaly.
More gravity = more drop. If you shot almost straight up, and the bullet landed 20 feet in front of you, that bullet was subjected to 20ft of gravity along the surface of the earth, if you shot horizontal, it would be subjected to 100 yards or more of the force of gravity.
That is how the magazine article explained it to me and it makes sence.
The article like I said,, said it was a little more comples than that, but in simple terms that is how it works.

Roach I really reeeealy hate to disagree… I shoot at pine cones in the
top of pine trees @ approx 40degs almost daily 90 yds away…. If I use
the mildot that corresponds with a level 90yd shot, the pellet goes well
above the intended target… I have adjust my point of aim below the
intended target to hit the pine cone… Those are real life facts… Not
calculations or Chairgun statisics….
But I have to admit, I always knew it happened, but until I read it in a gun rag, I did not know why.
The article I read, said it was a little more complew when you looked at the physics,, but the crust of the problem was the lenght of travel as opposed to the surface covered by the bullet along the earth.
