why, when you sight in on level ground your poi changes when you are shooting up/downhill???? do you aim high or low when shooting down/uphill???

Lets say you are shooting at a rabbit (38) yards away down in the creek bed and you are 15 feet higher than bugs.You would shoot the wabbit at say (32) yards because of arc?
Something like that yes.
Rule of thumb I use is to estimate or rangefind the distance in a straight line to target and use that. I dont rangefind up a tree – I’ll rangefind to the base of the tree at my eye level.
Sorry to disagree with this ,as a (pro level) archer we will always be shooting down ,i.e tree stand ,3-D target,but if you range find a tree at 30 yards from the ground then look up and see a squirrel 40 ft up the tree ,Then it is more yard-age (draw a line from 3 angles not 2 ) ,but splitting atoms here about gravity playing a part here is less important (to me) than true yardage.with that said im a very green novice air-gunner and you guy’s on here have much more expertise than I, and will always look forward to your advice.

I don’t know what the hell a pro-level Archer is, but back when I owned X-IT Archery in Killeen Texas I was the second ranked 3-D shooter in the State. And have the trophy’s to prove it. and I gotta tell you, your dead wrong.
Either your bow is way too slow, or the sights are too far above the window.
For what it’s worth, I was a tester for Oneida and Hoyt, and we trained Olympic Archers as well. I think we kinda had a handle on it.
I hunted with Ted Nugent for a while, and I witnessed him take a hoofed trophy at well over 200 yards. NelGuy Buck. We know a little about long range and rough terrain shooting. And Air Guns are a hell of a lot easier!
When you can hit a 5″ circle 10 out of 10 times from 3yards to 100 yards with your bow, at UN marked range, you’ve figured it out. 😉
You can download this free program http://sourceforge.net/projects/balcomp/ and enter wind as well as the angle of the shot to see where the POI will be.
BUT depending on the distance and angle the flight time may be so similar that it simply doesn’t matter.
I think TX HE was thinking about 200-400 yard shots from a tree blind rather than 20 yard shots from an airgun.

I still think you should shoot some leaves on the tree to understand you exact POI.
I bow hunt too – but I shoot deer and I’ve never come across a deer 90 yards up a tree 😛
My comment about SHOOTING (and not launching arrow’s, water balloons or using a trebuchet) is correct.
There’s even an explanation for it I found –
Rifleman’s rule is a “rule of thumb” that allows a rifleman to accurately fire a rifle that has been calibrated for horizontal targets at uphill or downhill targets. The rule provides an equivalent horizontal range setting for engaging a target at a known uphill or downhill distance from the rifle (called the slant range). For a bullet to strike a target at a slant range of RS and an incline of α, the rifle sight must be adjusted as if the shooter were aiming at a horizontal target at a range of RH = RScos(α). Figure 1 illustrates the shooting scenario. The rule holds for inclined and declined shooting (all angles measured with respect to horizontal).

So based on that picture… I’d ignore the “slant range” and shoot the “Horizontal distance”.
I’d hazard a wild guess that the lower velocity and heavier weight when using a bow make the retardation effect of gravity on the arrow’s velocity when shooting up start to have an effect where it doesn’t on a faster lighter pellet or bullet enough to matter.

It’s not exact, but for hunting works well enough. If a squirrel 50 feet up in a tree, and the tree is 20 feet from you, you aim at the squirrel like it was 20 yards away.
Dead squirrel. 🙂

If the tree has broad(ish) leaves try shooting at them and check your poi vs scope mil dots.

This is easy. your 30 yds from the tree at site level aim for 30 yards wether the sqweazer is 10 feet or 50 feet up the tree it dose not matter its still 30 yds. when you shoot out to 1000m you aim at 1000m regardless of angle

My .02. If you picture yourself standing up shooting your rifle through a scope, there is a slight difference between line of sight and bore sight. You could say, “the scope is looking slightly down or the gun is pointed slightly up” For the purpose of this conversation lets say the scopes line of sight is dead level and the rifles bore is pointed slightly up. This causes the pellet to intersect the scopes line of sight twice. Mike, if you stood under a tree and shot perfectly straight up, the pellet might land ten feet behind you. The reason you need to aim low when shooting at extreme angles is gravity can’t pull on the pellet perpendicular to its flight path.

Heh? been shooting my whole life. Have never compensated, up or down, for inclination. I was introduced to the idea when I bought a Mildot Master card, which is sort of an analog computer to give you a fast firing solution using mildots, unknown range, and known target size (range estimation using mildots); sort of a large, clumsy special purpose slide rule. You youngsters won’t remember those.
I did experiment with range adjustment for inclination, but it never made a practical difference in the field. With airguns, I’ve never had to make an adjustment up or down due to inclination. The ONLY area where I HAVE consciously made a slight adjustment for inclination is with archery, due to the very slow speed of the arrows, gravity has a very noticeable effect on trajectory. And goats do appear both above and below you on steep mountain faces, so I’ve had to make adjustments on steep downhill and nearly vertical shots. You aim CLOSER to adjust. The calculations are simple, but in the field you just fudge the distance. One shot I distinctly remember was a downhill shot I had at a goat which did not know I was there, so I had all kinds of time to setup. I pulled, held on his shoulder (was trying to break his shoulder because he was near the lip of a cliff, and others I have shot in the heart/lung have managed, even with a good shot, to throw themselves off the cliff… if I got lucky and broke the shoulder, it might anchor him long enough for me to run down and grab him before he could make it the 10 yards to the cliff edge), estimated his range at 45 yards, and noticed my arrow was inclined downward steeper than 45 degrees, so used the 40 yard pin instead. Released…. and me and the goat watched in amazement as the arrow flew clean over his head, about 8 or 10 feet high and to the right. I had been so busy estimating the range over and over, then fudging the hold, that I didn’t notice my arrow had crept out of the little notch on my dropaway rest and was pointed slightly right and since it wasn’t in the notch, on release the arrow wasn’t pointed straight, it was pointed up and right and took off that way and continued… waaaaaaaay off target. I laughed out loud and shook my head; the goat glanced at me and I coulda swore he winked at me before he scampered over the cliff edge.
So, THAT’s how it’s done. May you find your arrows, I never found mine.
