Q:

Could it be possible that using a Shroud for a 24″ barrel with an 18″ barrel could be causing accuracy problems? I am just not impressed with the groups I am getting at any psi or PW setting….The POI is all over the place….The fps is consistantly getting lower with each shot by an avg of about 4 fps. There will be a few times that 3 to 4 shots group well but the rest are just don’t live up to the AirForce reputation…..I have checked and double check every screw and everything is tight and staying tight….I have run out of things to test….Need some creative troubleshooting methods…..

you should be able to see a clear sight pitcher with absolutely no shadows or “moons” being cased by the shroud when looking down the barrel with the tank off and the breech open, if you see any at all wile looking down it and holding the rifle in different angles then loosen the grub screw and rotate the shroud in till it is clear and retighten the grub, check again.
It also helps if your looking through the barrel into a bright light.

Did you lube the hammer with anything? How about barrel bushings, are they shimmed with anything to fit tight? Have you checked your top hat? It may be loose…

Shot the hammer with silicone spray awhile back.
Silicone grease on barrel where hammer is.
FPS is consistant….Avg about 4 fps diff per shot
Barrel bushings are not shimmed. but barrel is secure.
Top Hat is tight….

Don’t you just hate it when a gun isn’t shooting right, but the joy when you solve it!!!

That’s what makes it so addicting…The pleasure of a perfect shot…..

I think you are right about the shroud lining up…If it is shooting well tomorrow I will have to find a shroud for the 18″ barrel instead of trying to do it the half azz way…..

Thanks for the replies everyone….

Great idea….But….The end of my shroud doesn’t have an actual cap that you can take off and I can’t see clearly when trying to look through it so see if anything is hitting….I have the 24″ barrel on now and the barrel goes into part of the baffling in the shroud, so, if it is shooting well like this, I would think that there is something going on when I have the 18″ barrel on with the shroud…..

Gotta be clipping then !
Sounds like when your 24″ engages the first baffle, its what it needs to line everything up ‘just so’.
Could be that the shroud flexes just a tad with the 18″ when u fire, but the 24″ engaging the first baffle holds it all secure…

Have you tried loosing the bipode……

use a sand bag and rest the forearm

in your palm on top of the bag…

works better than the bipode for me ….

Haven’t tried that….I’ll put that on the list of trouble shooting things I try tomorrow….

Well if everything is snugg and lined up.

You are clipping. Did you sharpie the end cap and see if there is even the tiniest of marks?

run a loosened Q-tip through it just to make sure 😉

Just did that…Smooth as can be….No hanging on to the q tip

how dose that barrel groupwithout the shroud?
I would try it out necked and go from there, perhaps a funky crown?

Haven’t tried without the shroud but that needs to be done to eliminate that possibility….Crown looks great…..

Even magnified it is smooth and spotless

scope mabe..

That is always a possibility bones69 I hate to think that it is. I think if it were the scope I would get a pattern of inaccuracy like say off to the left or right more and more as I shoot but the shots are left, right, high, low, then for a few shots they are one holers then back to scattering again…….Maybe I am in denial and it is just me…..I could handle a flyer now and then but it looks like mostly flyers with an occasional pellet hitting the POA. Frustrating….I am swapping out for the 24″ and trying again tomorrow….Hopefully something will will become clear….
