Q:

Cricket De pinger with Pre filter L@@K

Testing new design. you can get the parts from Home depot—–>the hardest part was turning down the OD of the rubber tube to get a really tight seal–had to hammer it in, also the foam filter dampen the sound from the HP air rushing to feed the reg when shot is taken and it’s 4″ from the reg. work great and don’t hear the hammer and extended ping traveling through the air tube.

Ernest,
Or anyone else who knows,

I bought the exact same hose barb fittings and vinyl tubing as Ernest.
The info for that stuff is-
3/8″ ID x 3/4″ MIP Hose Barb. $1.29 each
1″ OD, 3/4″ ID clear vinyl tubing. $1.79 a foot.

Anyway, my question is, which end of the air reservoir is easier to access to install the depinger?
Should I remove from valve end and take out the regulator, or remove the gauge/fill port and slide it in from that way?
I’m average as a tinkerer, so give me the path of least resistance, and lowest chance I could screw something up.

Hey guys…

The serial number on the used .22 Cricket I picked up is “00775”, and there is no screw hole in the hand-grip. Can I assume my valve rod is plastic?

It’s a shooter, not the Lelya I wanted, but at 35 fpe it gets the job done where I live. Also, it is extremely quiet, but the best velocity I can get with 21gr pellets is 880 fps.

It looks like I need to take it apart and readjust the regulator and likely replace the valve stem.

Thoughts?

Hoot,

If you do take it apart please let us know if your valve rod is plastic. I have #800 and have wondered what mine has in it. I really don’t want to mess with it at this point, because I’m happy with 18’s shooting at 895. However, if its plastic I’d like to have one on hand to replace it.

Thanks
T.J.

Good info!

I just got my Cricket back from Ernest (amazing tune btw, brought a used gun with a wobbly crap trigger into a long range hunting masterpiece) Anyways he installed one of his new de-pingers in my gun and all I can say is WOW!

(The gun was kept around 950fps before and after tune…aka whole time)
Before sending it to him I tried it with factory stock, kind of loud but MUCH quieter than even my .22 edgun and other rifles, basically borderline backyard friendly in a residential neighborhood

I bought a Neil Clauge $285 (paid $250 shipped) 2-piece carbon fiber shroud w threads + LDC combo to “test” it, and to be honestly I noticed MAYBE at most (with extra LDC attached at full length) it was maybe 10-20% quieter? =/ I don’t know, some claim it’s amazing, but mine didn’t do too much, however it was a LOT lighter…and I KNOW the people living next door wouldn’t be able to hear it as much (remember bullpups always sound louder due to face resting on the breech) but still felt for that money it wasn’t worth it so ended up selling it.

After receiving the gun back where Ernest did a full tune, some extra trigger work, and installed the de-pinger AND vented my factory shroud with 7 holes it I noticed at LEAST a 60-80% sound reduction.

For a quick, cheap, couple items he made my gun now one of the quietest I own and BY FAR backyard friendly. I feel that the NC 2pc set DID quiet down the gun’s muzzle blast to nothing, but most of the sound was coming from the ping of the hammer slap. Ernest was able to eliminate this almost COMPLETELY! So I feel if I DID keep the shroud, in tune with new vented holes and the de-pinger the Cricket would be literally soundless and the best possible combo out there right now. But atm it’s extremely quiet(especially for 50fpe), saved ~$300, and kept the extra 7+ inches off my gun!

Those two would be an awesome combo like I said, but anyone thinking about buying one should first try a depinger and venting your factory shroud…if that near-silence isn’t enough then I guess a 2piece would do the job. But I was so amazed and had to fire more shots to check to make sure my chrony was right, 50 fpe and near silent. Ernest is a bullpup god :1:

Helooo uncle Hoot my is 000752 and you can consider you have plastic valve… if someone changed it before you…

Yes you are correct.

Let me see if I understand where this mod is to go in the air tube. When I take the regulator out to turn it down, I should put this new part back in first and about 4 inches further in than where the regulator goes back in. Yes / NO

The foam on my .25 Cricket was wrapped around the top of the breech, self-adhesive, (which won’t hold) but supported with additional strong adhesive to hold the foam tightly against the metal. I took it down to the stock and razor trimmed it. It was very very effective. I used 1/4″ closed cell foam. 1/2″ would probably work better, but that’s a decision you have to make, and consider the appearance in the deal.

This will definitely quiet “hammer slap”. I believe it’s better than putting sound cushion rubber washers on the hammer face, or attempting to modify the hammer valve stem interface in any way. It works quite well as it is and I don’t believe in fixing something that works just fine as it is.

The foam can be had on Ebay in various materials, sizes, and thicknesses. You don’t need much. The trick is finding a way to bind the foam to the metal on the breech…that was a real bitch because the foam has “memory” and wanted to straighten out to a flat sheet again. The thicker the foam, the stronger the memory factor! The heavier the foam cells, the greater the cell density, the better it works, but the harder it is to keep in place. I ended up putting some black duct tape about 1/2″ up the sides of the foam, from under the stock. This way I had a few length-wise inches of Gorilla duct tape holding onto the bottom edge of the foam, and pulling it down against the metal. Then I put some black liquid rubber where the duct tape met the foam. It made the foam/tape edge kind of “disappear”, and the look was favorable. However…if you can find a rubber adhesive that will bind to both the foam and metal, and stay there, that’s the way to go!

I can guarantee you a serious reduction in hammer slap, and that was on a .25 which had some serious “slap and ping’ issues. If you do a search here, I’m certain there is a lengthy post on what I did and many responses.

Ernest…being a man who doesn’t know limits, has his Cricket foamed up to the “assassin” level. That’s more than most of us need, but he proved it could be done.

It’s a cheap fix. The trick is getting the foam to stay put and still look nice. There are adhesives that work…they may be hell to get off later, but try some different products. You only need a small amount.

Foam on the outside of the gun or inside the depinger adapter?

quote sniperlabyo:

If you want it quieter you going to need the foam. There is that sound of decompression sound air blast to launch the pellet.

I tried this mod today and have concluded that it does take the ping away but I still hear the loud hammer slap. To add to it, I was also able to achieve this level by just squeezing in a 2 inch piece of vinyl tubing. Like how Ted Holdover did with his Matador.

I couldn’t find the exact piece that Ernest had but I did find a similar in the sprinkler isle at Lowes.

The 1/2 inch nose was a little long so I cut them off on both sides.

I can’t remember how long the piece of vinyl I used to fit both adapters but it was less than 2 inches long. At lowes they made me buy 1 foot of it.

I used a piece of foam from my gun case and shoved it in between the adapter. You have to make sure you don’t stuff too much in there or else air can’t go through.

At first I tried using a sander to get the vingl tubing to fit the air tube but it took foreeeeeever. So I decided to use a sharp razor blade and thin it out. It was really fast then used the sander to touch it up.

Like Ernest I had to hammer it in. To help hammer it in, I had laying around a piece of pvc that wrapped around the adapter perfectly and covers the vinyl tubing as well. So after about 10 hits, it was placed 4 inches in front of the regulator.

Here is my thought, I have Neil’s shroud and LDC on it, backyard friendly but still a bit loud due to the air rushing out. When I shot just air into a pillow, the hammer slap was very small. You basically just hear a click. How can we get the sound to that level? Is it the LDC that needs to be re-designed?

Since my air tube was disassembled. I changed my regulator setting from 130 b to 115 b using Ernest’s reg tester/setter. At this setting, my max fps is 870. This is on .22 STD Cricket. So for those who want to set their gun at 880, might need just a little more juice in the regulator. Hope that helps.

Ernest, will this mod alone take away the hammer slap or do you still need to wrap the breach and air tube with the sound absorbing foam?

Ok, you shroud read all the post—-it’s installed in the air tube about 4″ from the regulator. Sorry for now they are being installed in a full tune, when I finish with all the tunes all make some available —don’t know when–they just on coming.

ok ….im looking at it and thinking where the hell does that fit in??
and i want one :angrymob:
