Q:

Cricket stock stripping

Just started the first processes of re-staining my cricket stock….and that’s stripping the varnish off the stock…
Now this is about my 3rd application and I must say…whatever kalibrgun uses to finish their stocks is tuff stuff…
On the first application of the same stripper I had the edgun stock almost all gone of the original finish….so now i see it’s going to be a long process to get this stock to what I want it to look like.

No can see, really…? ๐Ÿ˜ก

How about this?

Fish and Chips with that vinegar?

When the time comes I will…it was always a technique i wanted to try….but I’ll leave this stock as is and maybe down the road try it sometime…I’m going to rub some more tung oil in and give it a nice shine to the stock.

I would go to your local hardwood lumber yard and pick up a small piece of walnut and try that technique on it before doing it to your stock so you can have an idea what to expect. Might cost you $10-20 bucks….but well worth it.

Lol I was about to say how the hell you get the wool and vinegar to mix that quick…the mixture takes time cause the vinegar needs to corrode the wool.

No, I followed your link and did a few more searches. Have never tried….this was the first I heard of it.

You tried it already?

Lmao you guys kill me sometimes…I’m not of a drinker so regular alcohol will do just fine….
As for the look of the gun I think I’m in a keep it the way it is right now.

I removed mine but had to break the spacer to do that I’ll be making a new one out of aluminum.

Iยดd make it up/down adjustable while at it.

Like this?

Well, ok, it’s not an adjustable spacer but it is a fully adjustable butt assembly.

I don’t know what wood stain you’ve used but for this kind of projects I usually buy the dry powdered variant that is meant to be dissolved in water or alcohol if I want it to go deep in the wood(sometime a mix of water/alcohol, goes deeper dries faster). Then you can control the shade more and do it stronger than recommended right from the beginning so you get it deep because the wood takes less for every coating as the wood becomes saturated.
And just to be clear on the alcohol part, I never use the drinkable kind!(for staining) Only denatured alcohol but I’m pretty sure some of you guys drink that too ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Ok guys after letting the black try and penetrate the wood…the stock wouldn’t soak in as much as I wanted…so I went a different direction….I removed the black but left enough to darken the grain…which gave the stock a old vintage look…let me know what you guys think.

I think it looks great ! Better than a black finish.

lol thats why i might order the longer stock as a backup….im pretty content with the look of the stock right now…but if the erge hits me than ill try that move and see how deep of a color it makes the wood

Bookmarked it, gonna have to try that. My only concern is that it seems to be unreversable, google some images and it seems that this will cause it to change deep down into the grain making almost impossible to sand off without removing to much material on lets same a gun stock ๐Ÿ˜† So its a “you better be certain” approach.
