Q:

Custom Leather cheek piece for Edgun

I got sick of having freezer burn and sctratches on my right cheek so went off to a local Saddlery for some custom leather work.

Have to say I love it, it was only £35 and has transformed the feel of the gun, cheek weld is much better and more comfortable, it smells good too.

The cheek area has 6mm of padding between two layers of really soft leather.

MKII is going to have a pellet pouch covering the join on the right side, already discussed with the craftswoman and its going to be sealed to stop pellets coming out, have no corners for pellets to hide in, have a stiff but quiet liner and have magnetic closures (no noisy studs or velcro).

On the regular….yes someone could easly have taken the measurements from the picture and made a replica of the cheek pad…BUT!!!! I live in New York City and I had called a place in manhattan….so right there tells you why they couldn’t do it off a picture….too much of a pre Madonna….they want their job to be made so easy…but want to charge you an arm and a leg for doing something I probably could do if I had the leather and a sowing machine….so in a way I’m glad she told me she couldn’t do it….

I just contacted my local saddlery and asked if they could replicate the cheek pad…and they informed me that they cannot make one unless they have one to work of off….I sent them the pictures with the measureing tape next to it and they informed me that they cannot replicate something from a picture. They need the physical item. 🙁

not sure whats up with American leathersmiths – I simply made a pattern from paper, took it and the gun to the workshop, two minutes discussion she said no problem, I went back a few days later and it was done – spot on 😕

come on fellas get a grip, you guys put men on the moon 😀

yes, he will make them to sell. I will keep you posted. I have to learn how to post pictures on here.

Will your friend make some to sell cause I’ve been interested since the first pics were posted…lol

I should have pictures of the cheek rest my friend is making early next week. The prototype looks great. He just needs to make a couple of minor adjustments and it will be done

From a gun leather makers perspective, what needs to be done, is to make a oversized mold of the reciever in wood to make a form. And then make a mockup of the reciever that is the exact same size of the reciever.

Then soak saddle skirt weight leather , and put the two wood forms in a vice or hydrolic ram, with the wet leather between them, press them together in the vice and let them dry.

Once dry, it should just snap on the top of the reciever. If the Edgun reciever is steel, and it probably is not, thin magnets inside the leather would also aid in keeping it on., but velcro glued to the top of the reciever with a rubber type cement that does not effect the finnish and inside the leather cap would work.

I’ve got a question on this cover, is it going to wear off some of the finish on the receiver ?

I was advised to not leave the cheek piece on all the time, just when you are shooting. The prototype fit snug and I don’t see it moving very much to wear down the finish. His advice was concerning the stock. The back of the leather is very soft and not abrasive at all

You could always wrap receiver with this to protect the finish.

my friend brought the prototype by last night. It looks great and just needs to be tweaked a little. He’s going to make the adjustments and bring another one by as soon as he can make one. It’s taking longer than he thought as work has been keeping him busy.

I would rather wear it off with a lump of leather than my cheek 😯

If it does wear you wont see it as it is covered in leather 😛

I would be more worried abouit the effect it has on the stock, I think as the sunlight ages the wood there will be a different colour under the leather, but then we only get two days sun a year here in England – it pisses down the rest of the time :3:

As a custom leather maker in a past life, that is a pretty easy project.

RC

we’ll are you done with that easy project yet? ❓

OK Fellas if anyone wants the pattern of my MKI cheek pad here are the photos, just print them such that the scale is correct and cut them out – et voila you have a paper pattern for your chosen leathersmith.

However MKII will be much better 😎 😆
