Q:

EDgun .25 vs Pigeons

So in my quest to make the EDgun perfect I decided to try something new. I followed some tuning advice from a bro in Lebanon ( I can’t tell the tune, I promised to keep it a secret). I shoot pigeons a lot on dairy farms and often times it seems like the pellet blows through the bird and it wounds the bird. Head shots are not a real option because I am shooting between 75-120 yards. I am there to help the farmer get rid of pigeons so for the sake of consistency I go for body shots. The tune took my 930 FPS .25 Maddy down to 890 FPS. The crazy thing is I get 7 magazines on regulator with a 3-5 foot per second ES. I found the lower speed killed the pigeons with a wider margin of error. The pellet is very stable.

Has anyone else noticed that slowing the .25 down a little seems to allow the pellet to transfer more energy into the bird/critter?

Here’s a little sample from my day.

Der Heckenschütze, you’re the man!

That is an impressive number of pigeons you got! Tell us your hunting secrets.

Brian,,,

this is really interesting ,,, i tuned my R3M .25cal STD to 925 FPS, and found it very poor to penetrate the bird’s body ,,, even my .22cal is far far better for penetrating with 933FPS …

i thought the head diameter of the .25cal pellet is bigger and needs more energy to be able to provide better penetration … so, decided to tune my .25cal to 940 – 950 FPS …

How was your results with tuning the .25 in the 940-950 range?

I have my .25 r3 dialed down to 850 and my .25 r3m set to 910 for longer distances. I have noticed the whack seems louder on birds on the slower pellet. On aside note, my .22 ultra is set to 720 fps with the 16 grn pellets and doing a fine job. Something to be said for slow and heavy.

Brother, if you need some help just shoot me an email. I’ve got my tactic dialed in. Hey miss you on the Vulcan page, but i understand with the new job and all, I know where to find ya.
