Fuck ME!

A tank-dump at 2000psi, that was fun. The silencer and chrony did 1044fps. And survived. 😆

So, I’m pretty sure the various seal configurations had been leaking, but I got to a point where I thought no way jose anymore. So it had to be the two holes I’d mistakenly drilled and sealed with brass bungs. I wrapped insulation-tape around those areas and no more leak. Hurrah!

In with Sean’s spring, got 945fps at 1500psi, but only 700 at 2000psi. Made a longer tophat but still no go. Put an extra spacer in, the difference of which was immediately noticeable when I cocked the rifle. I guess I should have put the shorter tophat back in at that point (the longer one has a full 10mm travel). BANG WHOOSH! 😆

So, fingers crossed that with the shorter tophat in I’ll finally be there. At least at 2000psi, not sure what’ll happen at 2500 and 3000. An extra inlet-port might be a good idea, more flow-through for the same tophat-travel.

I’ve been putting the dies in a holder in the tail-stock. I certainly wouldn’t try steel at that size, but brass should be doable? It’s a 1.5hp motor.

The problem with learning how to use my lathe is the manual came with nothing about the gears and screw-cutting. I don’t know what’s in there now, let alone how they’re already setup and much less how to switch them around to get different ratios etc. I know I could probably work it out, maybe within a couple of years even ( 😆 ) but unless it becomes an absolute necessity I simply can’t be arsed. And I’ve already read of another guy with the same lathe who took one look in the gearbox and changed all the gears “for proper ones”. Then he put a wiper-motor on the screw, so he could “cut threads properly”. That sort of stuff doesn’t fill one with confidence as to the possibilities.

I don’t enjoy machining steel at all, it takes forever and I have to use coolant, which makes a right pigging mess. A stem I can just about cope with, but a whole body? BOLLOCKS TO THAT! 😆

I’ll be joining your quest for home built valves shortly and will share my failure/successes here too. maybe I won’t add too much trash to my scrap bucket in the process.

I’ll have to order two new dies first, for the two external threads on the body (whatever they are, it’s posted somewhere). Plus I need a break from that infernal machine, I’m quite burned-out. 😆

from what i can find, m18-1.5 on the bottle end and 7/8-14 on the gun end of the valve. I need to order them as well. threading w/ the lathe is still in the stage of learning process here. Dies much simpler and more repeatable at this point (less resulting scrap metal)

I know people swear by lathe-threading, but the manual that came with mine is deficient in that area to say the least. And if a die does the job I see little use in learning it anyway, because I’d still use a die even if I knew how to do it on the lathe. Which is why I’ll never be threading barrels. Probably. 😆

I know that, you’ve already said you know nothing about venturi. But looking at the maths/design/physical dimensions I can’t think of any other explanation. I’m not even sure if the venturi effect can be applied to gas under pressure, so call it my best guess.

But as you say, who cares? Your design not only delivers the power, it does so with a stock spring. That is elegance mate. 😀
