Q:

Great First Focal Plane Scope back in stock

Hey gang, from a recommendation from Chad2 I got one of the Primary Arms 4-14X44 FFP Mil-Mil scopes to try on my .22 Cricket Std. I had never had one of those FFP scopes before, and WOW is it nice! Primary Arms is actually near the Houston area (Pearland, TX) so I went to their shop and looked at them before buying. For anyone that ever wanted to try a FFP scope, this is a GREAT deal. They had been out of stock for quite some time, but I noticed today they are shown as being in stock again and for only $229.00!!

Check ’em out here:

Here’s an idea of the holdovers possible with each reticle. These holdovers are calculated for a .25 cal JSB king at 940 fps zeroed at 50 yards.

SWFA Mil-quad

Vortex EBR-1

Vortex EBR-2

Hawke 1/2 mil 20X

Salty,
in that price range I would look to the Vortex. They have amazing customer service. I think the Bushnell 6500 series is really good quality but for that kind of money I want a zero stop on my turret. For me the quality of the scope is huge but the reticle is also really important. I like the Viper PST MRAD Mil/Mil EBR-2C, for some the subtensions are a little busy, because of the windage markings on each subtension. The EBR-1 is really nice as well if you want a little cleaner look through the scope. The zero stop is the best feature, all scopes should offer that.

Please don’t make me repeat my horror story with Bushnell and my 4200 Elite 6-24×50 (I nearly forgot about it). 🙄 It was a post (Bausch and Lomb – used to own Bushnell). I suffered a lot getting a proper repair when the internals broke on a low recoil varmint rifle. It was in between say a Hawke Sidewinder and a Sightron or Zeiss. It went back three times and took just over 7 months to get it properly repaired. Since that was a while ago I am hoping they have improved. I think that model is long gone. The scope was ok but not nearly as good as some claim. A middle of the road scope. I am done with Bushnell except for the ones I still own.

I know reviews on leupolds are mixed these days (I have three of the older ones I like) but I would still like to see them come out with a good airgun line of scopes. Just custom changing the parallax doesn’t do it.

I have some older scopes that are classics but the current ones not so much like a old Redfield and an original World Class Tasco (Japan).

The 1/2 mil reticle is probably the best set-up for an airgun. If you use holdover instead of the turrets then the 1/2 mil makes sense. I wish that reticle was offered on a better quality scope.

Yep me too… I’m looking at a Bushnell Elite FFP to get when my American Express bonus points build up a bit so I can knock the edge off of it a bit. Soze, you have any experience with them and FFP? I’ve never been a Bushnell fan, but I also don’t want to spend 2 grand for a scope on a pellet gun… 🙂

The Elite series has a 1/2 mil hash based reticle… bottom of it gets kind of busy, but doesn’t look too bad. Says it will focus down to 25 yards… We’ll see.

Thx,

I noticed in Ted’s latest videos he is back to Hawke Sidewinders. He said they video better but had other reasons.

Thanks. I don’t like thick reticle, but like to try FFP.

Thanks for sharing. Does it have fine reticle? I’m thinking to put it on my coming Lelya? the scope is about 13″ long.

Just ordered one from Amazon with free shipping. Thanks. I believe my Tikka t3 308 will like it too.

Not “fine” as in thin… I’d like it more if it was more like my Hawkes. I can however at 30 yards use the cross hairs to put .22 cal.. pellets thru a .25 cal. hole… that’s fine enough for me.

I shot this one a lot at different magnifacations and ranges and so far, the mil-dot scale tracks pretty good. That squirrel I shot at 72 yards was successful primarily because I had just finished taking about 30 shots in my creek at floating objects at different yardages… I had shot a floating plastic bottle with it zoomed in at 14 power and with the range finder confirmed the yardage at 72 yards. I then cranked the zoom down to about 4 or 5 and used the same sight picture (1 mil dot above center) and took the cap off the bottle (where I was actually aiming.) When I ranged that squirrel who also happened to be 72 yards, I had a high degree of confidence where that pellet was going when I pulled the trigger.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s NOT a thousand dollar scope, but for someone wanting to experience a FFP scope without spending a grand (or more), it is for sure worth it. It actually performed much better than I thought it would because generally I have the same opinion of Chinee glass as Sozy does. I’ve spent a buck or 2 on glass as well. For the money, I’d have no problem recommending this scope just as I have posted. It works.

Not trying to be a Debbie downer but those China scopes don’t track well over the long haul. It doesn’t manner who’s name is on the scope the Chinese scopes all have the same mechanics. I have blown 1000s of $$$ chasing glass, honestly for 75 bucks more than the sale price of that PA you could get a SWFA 10X42 or 12X42. The scope tracks well and it’s made in Japan. The glass is much better and good quality glass is important in low light and hot weather. The mirage found on cheap scopes is brutal. The SWFA is lighter too because there isn’t all that extra stuff inside for the magnification adjustment. The PA FFP reticle is thick for a pellet rifle, especially at 14X. There is a reason the owner of EDgun has a SWFA on is personal gun, the same reason copied it for his own scope production.

… my first kill after zero with the one I put on my .22

Shot him out of the top of this tree from my truck at 72 yards… head shot right behind the ear and out the bottom of his neck… I was impressed!

thank you salty! and I second this, these scopes are of the best quality I have owned/used and they look cool!

looking cool is #1 pri for me :biggrinn:
