here’s my new toy Taurus Raging Bull. 44mag 6.5″ ported barrel…one big handgun thats for sure !
i really like the grip of it
and i think it looks real badass
but one thing made me wonder a bit….manual states 240 grain at 1350 fps…about 900 fpe….is it ok to shoot wolf gold which is 1525 fps and 1200 fpe ?
i bought 8 different kinds of ammo to test, most of them in the 750-800 fpe range, and then one at 900, and wolf at 1200 fpe….but then got wondering if thats safe when manual says something differently…but its also a generic manual for all of their revolvers…
not having shot the gun yet, i can only comment of finish and such which on the outside is very good, but inside theres some machining marks in the cylinder and breech of the barrel…normal or not i dont know i cant remeber SW or rugers finish inside.
grip is nice for a large hand, i looks funky, but it fits my hand nicely….even wife’s small hand is ok with it, but she has to cock it with her left hand, as her thumb just cannot reach the hammer.
it comes with a piece of plactic in the cylinder, guy at the store said is was for dryfiring pactice, thought that was a cool idea…SA mode is nice, breaks easy, double action im not real confident with….it seems like theres a slight stop before the hammer falls…but i got a little bit of a problem catching that rest every time…im sure its something i will develop af feel for once i get some range time.
cylinder locks in front and in the back…like ruger does too, but ruger you only have to operate one lever…on the taurus its a 2 hand job to get the cylinder out….pretty easy though once you know how….i was worried a bit when i felt the cylinder could rotate just a bit, but once the gun is cocked the cylinder cannot be moved what so ever, not even the slightest
things i would have changed….well sights are black, i hate that as i cant see the freaking thing on the indoor range…i remembered it having a red front sight…but i remembered wrong i guess…gotta go buy some fiber sights for it
opticsplanet has so far fucked me over…i ordered a bsquare rail from them 1½ week ago, it said in stock….but just yesterday got a mail it was backordered…those fucks…why did they wait so long….i intend to mount my eotech on it…but i guess that will have to wait grrrr
tomorrow its range day….well after lunch at google, and dropping off the civic, as the fix they did to the third gear, have fucked up second gear and made it real notchy…but then it range time…wife wanted to go let some lead fly as well…she has still to try the .22lr glock conversion…im sure she will love it.

The hotter loads should be fine, as all commercial ammo is required to conform to SAAMI specifications for chamber pressure. if in doubt you could contact the maker of the hot stuff and inquire as to the chamber pressure, then contact Taurus for their recommendation. The Bull is a really solid gun and should have no problems with it.
Taurus has been great support the couple times I dealt with them.
As far as loads appropriate to your revolver, I wanted to add to the above, that I often see warnings next to the hotter .44Mag loads that say “not for use in a Smith and Wesson this-or-that frame”, as there are different frames for that caliber.
A guy fired some factory .44MAG JSP’s thru my chronagraph using a Ruger BlackHawk Hunter (Rugers are known to take heavy loads better than most) and the 240grainJSP’s were registering 1404fps. Those rounds tore the crap out of my steel silhouette spinner, and now it’s no jacketed rounds, and cast slugs only when shooting the iron spinner.
You can shoot .44 Special out of that revolver, correct? That (.44 special) would be a good home defense round, as well. About like a regular .45ACP load.
I far prefer revolvers to automatics. The GP100 Ruger with the 6 inch barrel is an excellent revolver.
That is one mean lookin’ revolver you have in that Taurus! .44Mag is potent. That porting at the end of the muzzle must make the report even more deafening!
wow you noticed the pint glass…..my mom had a bar…then they decided to cancel her lease as they wanted to take it over…and they where expecting to get all the inventory too….they thought wrong….all family memebers basicly got glasses of all kinds…i even had a 1 gallon “gammel dansk” bitter glass….worth 500 bucks…but as with all my glass….wife’s friends and family have killed them, one of her buddys kicked the bitter glass which was used as a huge floor standing vase….and the wife have slowly killed the pint glasses….to the point we got 6 left lol…
anyhow….i love how the taurus look…imho its just such a bad ass space looking revolver…i have allready orderes rail for it, and its gonna get a EOtech reddot on it.
was out shooting it for the first time today, started out with a white case of winchester….holy cow batman !!! ok i tried som ehot load in .357 magnum, in a ruger gp100 6″ and it was fun, no pain just an allround nice round to shoot, 38 sp was very nice allmost no recoil….ok that was for comparison….i loaded the gun, took aim and cocked it….little nervous i pulled the trigger and BLAAAAAMMO i hit center target…and saw the bullet come back from the trap and splinter some of the baffels in the roof 😯 not my prob….im on target….one of the slugs came out of the trap hitting the wiresystem so hard the guy in the store came out to see what i was doing….luckily i had just put up a fresh target with 6 holes in it….enough proof hehe
revolver is heavy…not too bad but quite heavy, im glad i got a 6″ barrel and not something shorer cause the recoil is punishing, im sitting here and the webbing between thumb and index finger is still red hehe, doesnt hurt…but as SteveLA said probably wanna make some watered down rounds for all day fun
the muzzle jump is not bad, i think the porting is doing its job…the few times i managed to followthrough with open eyes, the was 2 massive flames shooting straight out of the ports about 1½ feet long flame…. 😈
overall….it was fun had to buy a box of ammo at the store as i had only brought one, thinking that would be enough 🙄 got a box og magtech, and it was a bit nicer to shoot than the winchester….cant imagine how the 1200 fpe wolf is gonna feel like its like 50% more powerfull hehe…gonna save that for a while i think LOL
shooting is awesome ! i do feel a burn in my pocket when dumping 50 bucks, gotta get that reloading bench soon

Ive shot a Ruger Redhawk for years with quite a variety of ammo, most of which is too hot for my TC Contender.
One thing “GENERALLY” holds true with revolvers, they can handle a bit hotter loads that a closed barrel gun will. Some of the pressure is being blown thru the gap between the barrel cone and the cylinders.
Now that being said, not all revolvers are built strong enough for heavy loads, but it appears your new gun is very substantial.
But it really boils down to what the manufacturer suggests, or you can risk damaging the gun. If Taurus advises against the wolf loads you mentioned, try something else. I would tend to think your gun could handle them though.
Like I said, my Ruger has held together for over 20 years shooting stiff loads that make my TC Contender very unhappy. I had a smith give it some work a few years ago and he said it was holding up quite well.
Same loads split the case in the TC though.

Nice gun. I remember when I went gun crazy years ago and owned everything I could. Over the years they got sold or traded and now I have a Ruger P90 and a Ruger Black Hawk 41 mag.

thanks folks for you advise…i will try contact wolf ammo and taurus and see what they have to say….most people agree tha the taurus are strong built revolvers, more so than SW, i dont know if this is true…i mean theres alot of different ways to build strenght….like casting vs milled and so on, and the type of alloy used as well, and i think alot just see the beefy srap and crane on the revolver and judge by that.
video is on its way…well…wife and i are hitting the range tomorrow, i will bring camcorder and try get some slowmo of the porting in action, that should make for some interesting video
i can still feel i ran 70+ rounds through it today in my hands….hehe, why the hell did nature give me big hands and small wrists….
the gun was bought cause it can run 44sp through it too, which is more suitable for range time and for the wife…im really trying to get her hooked on this shooting thing.
tomorrow we are hitting the gunstore/range again….she is past her 1 month wait, so she can buy her next gun…im thinkin 1911 single stack, its just one of those ikon’s of america…i must own one….and the single stack should make for a thin enough grip that the wife can get a good hold on it now being she cant get a descent grip on the glock….wonder what she is gonna think of the 44mag tomorrow….she will prolly try 6 shots…and go right back to the 22lr glock hehe
