Q:

inconsistant shooting

Just bought a Talon SS. I’m finding that it’ll shoot erratically high and low. Some shots go with a POP ! and others with a PFFFTTT !! with the pellet striking 2 inches lower. The gun prefers Crossman premiers , 14.3 grain over JSP 18 grain pellets. Occasionally I’ll get a good ragged holed 5 shot group but over all, I’m disappointed with the stock gun performance. Being a new gun, is there a break in period where things should improve ? Could there be a problem with the valve not putting out consistent pressures ? It there a “standard aftermarket set up” to get the best out of these guns ? Just to see if it was me, I shot 14 shots into 3/8 of an inch at 21 yards from a bench with my HW100. A common occurance with this particular gun. Pretty sure it wasn’t my shooting. The scope is a Leupold mk 4 with a 50 ft focus adapter. I use this same scope on my HW 100, with Leupold QD mounts. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Also when you start to get vertical stringing one thing to keep in mind is not to rest the gun infront of the foregrip.

Rest it on the foregrip and be sure not to put downward pressure on the gun while shooting. People tend to forget the barrel is in there and pressure on it can change POI.

Great tread !

I have both AF Talon SS 22 cal and a Condor SS 25 Cal. The Condor seem to be less sensitive to proper shooting technique then the Talon is. The Talon can be quiet a challenge to shoot straight, for me anyway.

sweet,,, glad to hear it,
these guns can compete with the most accurate guns out there when it tune .

Well, It’s been almost a year since I bought my Talon. The gun finally settled down and is shooting very well. It’s accurate and just plain fun to shoot. It loves the the Crosman Premier hollow point pellets (22 cal) and has been used to rid my neighbor’s garden of aggressive black birds that were running off the sparrows, finches and robins from his feeders. It is a bit hold sensitive especially canting. I have one of Tony’s shrouds and the gun is really quiet. At times when noise isn’t an issue, I use the standard end cap for a lightning fast handling carbine. Accuracy doesn’t seem to change much shrouded or un-shrouded. Teamed up with a Pulsar NS550, this is a really fun rat buster.

i have not read all the comments but is your tophat screws locked in with loc-tight or nail polish if not your tophap might be adjusting itself creating high and low power shots

another thing are you making sure you are locking the breach all the way over if not you might be loosing air fro the breach when shooting

one more thing do you lock the breach to the same side every time if not try that

just some ideas

Great reply, thank you so much.
I have some time off so aside from normal stuff that’ll leave me some time to tinker with the gun. Ill keep you posted.

more or less
When i am trying for best groups , i create a notch in my sand bags so the gun does not have to move as i pull the trigger,

you can watch the gun roll slightly with the shot , depending on how hot your shooting. so i just kind of snug the gun to my shoulder and basically touch the forearm area with left hand, so it gives the gun slight resistance to movement to keep the shot consistent from shot to shot ,

my right trigger finder is on trigger, with my thumb only on the back of the grip, so when pulling the trigger i push evenly with the thumb as i pull with the trigger finger as to not move anything as little as possible.

This is more than most would go to the trouble to shoot groups , but your get the idea, just hold the gun the same from shot to shot.

I don’t think this is your trouble for the most part ,your printing with your stringer, we all know shooting a springer is much more involved for best groups, that gun will out shoot that springer when in tune .

this fine holding will only come into play ,when your trying to hone your groups from 3/8′ to one hole groups that have to be measured from out side to outside and subtract the diameter of the pellet to get the group size for the most part 🙂

unless you have a gorilla hold on it.

I really think your issues are possibly with the inside of the frame ( needing polishing or lube or both)

getting the gun in tune

barrel is dirty and needing breaking in.

Most of the best shots on here have polished the hell out of everything on the gun, including the bore.

So I guess shooting these guns is like shooting a springer ? Just hold loose and let it do its thing ? That could be my trouble all along.

Jamie

That’s part of the beauty of these guns………….simplicity.

That’s wants on mine now .

Oh, and on that tag thingy on the spring. for years they just stuck a piece of blue painters tape on it and called it good. Hi Tech I tell Ya! 😀

Knife

K,
((((remember to keep the inside of frame and hammer coated with rem oil or the like ,)))) and clean the barrel.

I also keep , divers silicone, or die electric grease on the outside of the top hat where it slides in the breech .

(((((also are you pushing the breech to the same side each time you pull it back after cocking the gun , this also makes a difference)))))

lets see what the bore looks like

I’ve been holding it firmly while on the bench, that makes sense I’m not holding it right. Degreased the hammer and reset the top hat. I checked the shroud for clipping as well. I think it best to adjust my hold and just shoot it a lot then check it in a month or so.

OK , have some more info to work with now.

you have a crony, set up and shoot thru the crony while shooting groups and this will tell you all, and a you have spin lock ,so really you should be able to tune fairly easy with the gauge on your set up,for known psi in tank.

another thing 15 shots is not enough to tell you anything about where the gun is with your tune,

and yes you need to shoot the gun allot, it need breaking in for best performance.

have you ran a patch down the bore yet , you need to clean it , and that will let you know how ruff your bore is, as to how much crud is built up.

also if you have your barrel out, take a q tip and fluff it out, slide it into the end of your barrel then pull it out slowly , and see if the fibers grab at the muzzle, as to see if your crown is nice and smooth

Powderburner,
Thank you so much ! The tank was filled to 2900 psi and went down to 2700 psi after the fifteen shots. Could it be valve locked ? I like your idea of just shooting to see if the groups shrink at any certain pressure. I moved the top hat out one complete turn, keeping the power wheel at 6 . After moving out one turn, the gun put ten pellets over a chronograph for an average of 805 fps with 14 gr Crosman PHPs. One shot read 640 fps. but all others ranged from 790 to 813 fps. I think there is something dragging on the hammer.

At least now it’s starting to group on paper. I’m going to shoot it some more to see if there is a point it actually starts to group and note the gauge reading ( Spin lock tank ) over the course of a full tank. Also, I think I just need to shoot the gun a lot more for parts to wear in a bit.

Again, thanks for your help and patience.

Jamie
