Q:

inconsistant shooting

Just bought a Talon SS. I’m finding that it’ll shoot erratically high and low. Some shots go with a POP ! and others with a PFFFTTT !! with the pellet striking 2 inches lower. The gun prefers Crossman premiers , 14.3 grain over JSP 18 grain pellets. Occasionally I’ll get a good ragged holed 5 shot group but over all, I’m disappointed with the stock gun performance. Being a new gun, is there a break in period where things should improve ? Could there be a problem with the valve not putting out consistent pressures ? It there a “standard aftermarket set up” to get the best out of these guns ? Just to see if it was me, I shot 14 shots into 3/8 of an inch at 21 yards from a bench with my HW100. A common occurance with this particular gun. Pretty sure it wasn’t my shooting. The scope is a Leupold mk 4 with a 50 ft focus adapter. I use this same scope on my HW 100, with Leupold QD mounts. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

You have been ask several questions. Look back at the post , that gun when tuned will be boreing accurate at 21 yards ,were talking 10 shots in dam near one pellet hole

if those groups in that target are 21 yards something is way off,
hammer dragging
pellets clipping ?

Before you go to the rest of this ( how are you holding the gun when shooting,)you need to put as little pressure of the gun as possible .

What are you resting the gun on when shooting on the bench( don’t squeeze the gun or put pressure down on the gun into the sandbags if that’s what your using.

The gun needs to be held exactly the same for each shot, it is very sensitive for hold,

your describing low then high shots, could be this is inconsistency with hammer strike or valve opening??? or hammer strike or power wheel way off compared to psi in the tank, sounds as if your PW is really low

power wheel is set at.( you said 6, maybe turn it down to 5 or 4)

you have not given psi of tank pressure

These have to be in sinc to work for peak accuracy, there is a ton of info on here for this .

barrel has to be clean
top hat can not be getting loose
top hat .075 or the thickness of a nickle for a good start, .085 ?? might try smaller
your power wheel needs to be around 4.5 to 6
tank pressure around 2400

IF you want you can fill your tank to 2800 and just start shooting 5 shot groups, _(when your groups tighten up)
pull your tank and see what the pressure is,
this is the pressure you need to fill your tank to when filling the gun back up.

put your tank back on without filling, continue shooting 5 shot groups until your groups start getting bigger, pull tank again and see what the pressure is
now , the last pressure check is the psi that you need to fill the gun back up again at or just before so your groups don’t open up on you.

Also when i have seen consistency go to crap , make sure you have a good coat of silicone or graphite spray oil on your inside of frame and hammer like remington gun oil that dries and only leaves a non dirt attracting film.
spray it down into the frame then pull your hammer back and forth, and rotate the hammer around to make sure all gets coated.

“Spring Silencer”……………i think it’s a trap for newbies. I can deal with a little twang as long as the pellets go into the same hole. I’m thinking it’s probably the balance between spring tension and top hat adjustment. Mine is set at .085.

It’s a great gun if I can to get it to shoot as it’s supposed to i’ll be a very happy lady.

LOL yes as a new owner of an airforce gun i to made the mistake of misidentifying the silencer. My only excuse is that i did not see the silencer part of the tag only the spring text thru the power wheel slot and i thought hmm they must have the parts labeled for assembly and forgot to remove that label so i did it for them  Knifemaker quickly scalded me as the stupid noob i had proven to be and corrected me as to what it really was 😆 Fortunately my guns spring does not seem to make noise but you could put another one in place of the original you took off.

Forgot to mention, the group to the right of the bulls eye is totally random. The power wheel is on 6. One shot “POP” in the group, the next “PFFT” down way low on the target and the next one “POP” in or near the group.

Any ideas ?

Oh no.

Not the spring silencer,

That keeps your spring from twanging

I found this tag attached to the mainspring, lodged between the frame and sprinng. I bet this was my problem the entire time.

I talked to a very nice woman at Airforce. She had me go through a troubleshooting list, checking the scope, shooting method, screws, accessories and the tophat. Seeems there needs to be a little tension on the breech from the tophat to keep it closed. She advised that ptfe grease shouldn’t have any effect on accuracy. The gun is back to shooting as it should, even showing promise with jsb’s. Life makes sense now.

Thanks guys.

what are all your settings,
top hat
power wheel
air pressure
what was the air pressure when your shot good groups compared to when it was not shooting

and x2 what Pab’s said ,

Pull out the barrel, hammer and breech. Clean and polish the inside of the frame where the hammer rides and DO NOT put grease in there. Clean the hammer. Put some silicone grease on the barrel where the breech rides(the thin part of the barrel). Put a little silicone grease on the valve stem. Make sure the top hat is secure with the grub nuts( much better is to buy one of the Talon Tunes one piece top hats, you will see a marked improvement just from that).
These steps are required as a bare minimum to keep your rifle shooting properly. Many more tips on tuning available to get it really shooting great.

Grease may have migrated into the frame where the hammer rides. I use shotgun cleaning methods to clean the frame about every 3 months. It does help!

Plus, if you followee SShooters suggestion, your top hat will be “WAY” to open and give very erratic performance.

Gun is back to shooting high and low randomly. Was acting up yesterday, took it apart last night and cleaned and lubed it with ptfe and its back to shooting all over the place again. I think i’m going to de grease it and shoot it dry . I changed scopes, checked all the screws, re filled the gun to 2800 psi. It’s shooting straight up and down in a vertical line with a 6-12 in variation in poi. I’m starting to think i have a bad valve .

Yes, it’s a lot more fun when everything works as it should. 😀 😀 😆 😆 😆

cool :8: It is allot more fun when you can hit what you aim at

I think I got the inconsistant shooting bug worked out. 5 shots, 20 yards, leaning against a cinder block pile with 14 grn crosman premier hollowpoints.

Thanks guys.
