Q:

Inside the Hummingbird–Now the tuning & issue begins!

I will post all internals and how the bird work and whats need tuning or improvements in this Topic. This BP is going to be a hit, vary well made over the cricket.

Got her today so I will cover several area as I go along tuning and adjusting:

1. the gauge isn’t aligned properly in my book. So if you have a standard cricket gauge socket it will fit the HB, but 1st the AT must be vented
under the trigger guard is where the standard fill hole and use the same fill probe as the cricket, as you can see on the photo near the fill hole is
the bleed screw—-> its a larger heavy duty screw compare to the cricket. After all the air is vented the AT can be unscrew—this AT wall thickness is thick and heavy–so vary unlikely you wont dent the AT in normal use–even dropping the HB. the oring that seals the AT is 3mm X 30mm. the fill
check valve is the same size as the cricket, had to increase the fill rate to my liking vary easy to do.

2. Now I’m having issue with the bolt blowing back when shooting pellets, when it does a lot of air will blow on your cheek and scare the shit out of me the 1st time it happen also the speed will drop about 8 to 12 fps. now it blow back about 2 to 3 time a mag full that not good—have to find this problem. Has to be the locking ball of some type—its like a free floating bolt after its cock if nothing locking it in place it will blow back! If anybody has this problem let me know!!!! 😥

Earnest,

So it looks like you are getting 44 shots with a good extreme spead. It is advertised as getting 70 shots. What do you think of this?? Perhaps the smaller tank or does the reg need work? I will be happy with 50 shots with an extreme spread of less than 10 fps shooting at 30 ftlbs.

Also, did you turn the cocking rod cw or ccw to fix the blow back issue? Based on your review so far, I am strongly considering getting one soon. I really love the fact that the cocking lever is forward and on the left hand side. I shoot of a bench often and could see the benefits of this arrangement.

Thanks!

Gabe

I tuned CCW to lengthen the rod.

My shot count is base on when it goes off the reg when filled to 220b my normal fill , and if I fill to another 25 bar I would have gotten 14 more shots.

That 70 shots has a lot of questions attach:

1. They must have filled to 300B

2. they must have shot it way down after it went off the reg

3. they didn’t post what pressure they stop counting.

4. whats their ES

5. must be summer over there

6. they had a loose rifling test barrel that require less air usage

7. that test guy wanted a even #

8. when was the last time that crony was calibrated?

Going to sleep now and dream about #9

How is the Double loading prevention mechanism and how to de-cock that bird ? lol

Great work Ernest. Tell us about the reservoir covering, and that neat little bolt handle. I wonder how a tactical equivalent might look.
I think I’ll take my time shooting whenever I can (once I get mine). I like that 9 fps Es. Power seems very good too. Do you think it’s worthwhile to have a seller check a Bird for blow-back (similar to what you had to fix) before shipping? I don’t think I’d mind asking for that check. A seller would not have to ship one with that defect if he just checked for it. Just my view.
I look eagerly await your next installment. Sure has that Pavlovian effect on me. 😉 thank you for keeping us updated on your exploration of this new product.

I agree they should be tested with 2 full mags–if it has blow back or cocking handle not fully traveling forward or back
it will show up in that 28 shots.

I like the feel of wood rather then that small smooth slippery stock cocking pin—–now it’s covered in wood and I can rapid fire without my finger hurting or start cramping up.

Dang it Ernest! Why did you have to go and say something like that!? …”it’s my favorite BP”…

You might as well give us a cost to do a full up Ernest Tune! :winkn:

Its a blast to shot in rapid mode, I don’t have to reach over with my left hand to cock the cricket and loose sight of my target!

Have to finish 5 tunes then no more this year 🙁

This cover the magazine!

its a well designed and made CNC precision, theirs no plastics here only the oring. its so easy to load after you get to know how it loads and how it works. day and night over the cricket mag system. I think its the best mag out there with more then one parts. when in place its flush with the cheek rest of the action top and on the sides so theirs no mag or cocking lever sticking out to get in the way.

Ernest, how does one change the power on the Hummingbird; increase or decrease (mainly I’d like to decrease it a little if I choose to).
thank you,

Out of the box the HSTA is slightly over max speed====see photo –this is the max speed at 894fps see how fare it stick out the body but cant put on the stock so I had to screw it in till stock fit– now the speed drop to 887fps—-> so if you go over max speed the speed will start to drop due to over compression of the spring or you have reach max speed of the regulator air. if it’s the spring you have to trim/cut a coil at a time till you reach max speed of the hammer spring and able to fit the stock on. see 2nd photo were I cut the spring and use a aluminium HSTA set a max speed flush with the block— now I can put the stock on—and if I want to lower the speed I just screw the HSTS CW to over compress the spring to lower the speed–and I can go CCW to lower the speed the stock is in the way!!!!!!!!.

wow…! custom cheek weld pad…firm but soft, and warming sounds like a *****NEVERMIND****! 😳

Ernest,

What are you wrapping around the bottle? Is it a friction wrap or foam?

Also, you said no O-rings around the transfer port, why is that a good thing?

Its a sound dampening foam sheet, use to insulate sound in the car trunk.

I don’t think that foam will lose it’s adhesion in cold weather. Good choice.

Can’t imagine winter is coming, holding bear metal in cold temp inst good, yes thinking about insulating the cheek rest also.

Orings are a liability, not needed in a open end barrel where air will find less resistant direction. with a precision fit no oring required. Thumbs up to Kalibrgun ❗
