Let me say it again, I will try to break it down further, using the same wording, such as-
“there has been an elimination (deleted, done away with, throw out) the distinction between fact and opinion (the law states it is the same thing here, distinction has been eliminated) and that all it takes is a “suggestion”, such as trying to lead someone to believe something that is not true, has not happened, etc, that this is what happened and that it is Illegal
Courts have-“eliminated”
“the distinction between fact and opinion”
and “instead” hold that-
“any statement that suggests (SUGGESTS) a factual basis”
can support a cause of action for defamation.
If I rob a bank. Hand a note to a teller and say “give me all of your money and no one gets shot”, but he/she never see’s a gun, it is still armed robbery.
WHY?
The suggestion that I have a gun, whether I do or not.
If I use a squirt gun, it is still armed robbery.

It does not have to be a fact, just a claim, pointing in that direction, leading people to believe he is a thief, the act of the prediction is in fact a “suggestion” that he is a thief.
Look at it “LEGALLY”, not from made up assumptions of what you believe, remember- FACTS- REALITY…

Considering, legally speaking it can be harassment, slander, defamation of character, libel, etc, etc.

Is he going overboard?
Not IMO. It was totally uncalled for. He was not even part on the conversation or even posting on the thread until he was called out.
I do not believe any of us would appreciate that, especially considering there was no reason to say what was said (I am not going to repeat it).
Everyone reacts differently, that is one reason you do not see people called out on the street in most cases (unless there was a legitamite reason to do so), this sort of thing generally happens behind a screen, keyboard or when the other person is 100’s of miles away or around the world.
Just my .02 on the subject.

1- see both sides
2- know why someone is acting the way they are

There were no assertions made to a misdeed, this was a prediction based on an opinion. Screw your heads on folks and stop bending definitions and READ what was said. 🙄
