Q:

Mutant Test Groups – Different Barrels

Hello Everyone,

I guess I need to spend more time on the Forums. Here is another post that I copied.

I am now retired from the Airgun Retail business and find myself with time for FUN projects.

I was up visiting Peter Plesinger, the former owner of TopGun Airguns up in Phoenix. He had some Taipan .22 Caliber Mutants for sale with different barrels. I decided to see what all the chatter was about regarding the different barrels being used.

The picture shows the results. Here are the conditions:
27 Yards
Slight crossing wind
Rickety bench and rest
Five shot groups and four different target
JSB 18.1 pellets – NOT LUBED

Barrels:
CZ – CZ manufactured barrels
CR – Barrels made in the Czech Republic
?? – Can’t tell if they are German or Korean barrels. Most likely Korean.

The picture is worth more than 1,000 words.
The bottom right hand group for 645 was shot off balance and my right eye being filled with shadows. I will reshoot that one when I have more time.

Have fun at the range…..

My Short is shooting almost same as yours at 25mts with made in German barrel, but at 42mts groups are like 1″. Tried to contact Petr to exchange barrel but no luck yet

Maybe you should read some spinj posts on how to shoot accurately 😀

I will take time to do some 50 yard testing when in PHX next week.

Do not expect the results to be stellar. I have shot benchrest for many years and am an OK shooter. This airgun does not sit well enough in a rest to allow great results at 50 yards. My RAW is made for 50 yards and I am very happy with anything under 1/2 inch. Some days it will shoot better.

I would expect that anything under ONE INCH would be acceptable for this platform. If I get 3/4 inch it would be SPECTACULAR!!

Steve, please repeat this at 50 yards – very interested to see how the results compare.

Let me clarify something about the groups.

I pulled the top right shot on CZ 563. That was my fault and I knew it when I pulled the trigger.

I also screwed the shot on both bottom targets for the CR 645. That barrel shoots MUCH better than what is showing.

I think that all the barrels will shoot well if:

The right pellets are being used.
The shooter knows how to shoot.
The conditions are just right.

AND, that everyone doesn’t try to use a 1/2 ton truck to haul ONE TON of #%$&)

These Mutants are FUN guns to shoot. They are not made for benchrest accuracy. They were made to be short range airguns.

People need to quit worrying about the “POLO” logo on the shirt and just pay attention to how well the shirt is made and if it fits properly.

Interesting. From your experience the CZ made barrel, the CZ manufactured barrel and the unknown “made in Germany” barrel look to be producing comparable accuracy. In fact the unknown barrel’s group might be a bit tighter.
