need help on regulator adjustment
Just got my R3 standard (used, but spanking new to me!) and it’s shooting very hot. I did adjust the HST and max out at 980fps on JSB 18.1g. My speed start to drop off at around 127ish bar.
How much turn should I turn the regulator to get it near the recommended fps by you guys at 900fps?

I finally solved my problem with the fps all over the places. Well at first when I adjusted the reg, I though I was too much in, in the oearlier post. Come out because of that I was way to out. Instead of being somewhere around 115b, I was more like at around 160b.
I notice this when I look back, before adjusting the reg, I was able to put the set/cover screw for the reg about 1-2t in. When I was having problem, only need 1/2 t the most. 💡 💡
Longest I let it sit without usingit’s is 3d. Right now, it 1/4 in from stock which shoot 18g at 830fps consistanlty. I will need some orings before I take it off again.
OG – if you have some, can I buy some from you. I will need 4 o-ring for the reg.

OG, I agree with you 880-890fps is the sweet spot for the 18.1’s
Kazz, I agree 940fps..(937for U- I remember)..is the sweet spot for the 15.9’s
I know it goes against all conventional wisdom, but I was at Walmart and bought a tin of CPH’s 14.3g, they actually shoot pretty darn good out of my gun. When not windy I managed to get a 1″ group at 88yards, darn good for a hollow point pellet…In the wind, they crap out.

Without doing anything change from the last time, my string shots is strange again. Look like shit. After refill with HST 1/4 in, at first it look good…then it went down hill again. I though I got it fixed/working the last time I shots it. What went wrong…no clue. Unless this is a sign of a bad/problem regulator??? This is the 6th refill on this reg setting.

As far as the new JSB pellets are concerned; I got 12 Red Top, 350 count JSB Exact Heavy 25.4 grain 25 cal pellet tins in a couple of months ago. When I get down to 8-10 tins, I get nervous and I order more, sometimes my supplier is sold out and it can take 1-2 months for them to get a supply. I really hate to run out! I got the 12 tins in around a week later.
I got down to around 6 tins of the old Black top JSBs, and I thought that I would see how the new Red top pellets shot. I opened the first tin and I noticed that JSB had changed the angles inside of the skirt. I weigh sorted a couple of tins of them. I noticed that they didn’t vary, pellet to pellet, as much as the Black top pellets did. I was pleasantly surprised with that! I weigh sort to 0 .1 grain and I sorted out 2 tins of the Red tops in at 25.4 grains. I had 2 tins of the Black top pellets sorted to 25.4 grains also.
I went to the 100 yard range and shot 20, 5 shot groups back to back. I would shoot one 5 shot group was with the Black top and then the next group would be with the Reds. I kept alternating them for the 20 groups. The Reds averaged 0.47 something worse than the Blacks.
They were almost ½” worse at 100 yards and I am NOT happy with them!
Ed has posted that, when changing pellets, you need to do a good cleaning on the barrel, shoot 50 shots, to season it and then test for accuracy. I didn’t do any of that but; the Red tops never shot as tight a group as the Black tops did.
I AM NOT happy with this! I don’t understand why JSB has to fuck with a good thing! I understand that they are the “go to” pellet and they might not be able to keep up with demand. Somehow; I don’t accept the supply shortage as an excuse to ship sub standard pellets out!
Just my take on the new JSBs; your mileage may vary!

I’m with you, here to learn and Ted (Oldgoat) has been phenomenal in enlightening us as well as yourself and others.
For those in the know,
I would like to know how or if any maintenance there is to maintaining the regulator for optimal performance. Do you occasional take apart clean and lube, change out O rings? It’s my understanding regulators go bad in time and wonder if they can be rebuilt or be better to just replace with new?

Idd, most of the times I train INSIDE my bunker, but.. sometimes I take it outside OR we have to shoot at a half open range. That’s tricky!
I didn’t see the remark in the beginning stating that the TS had a spread of 150 fps 🙂 Of course, you need adjustment when seeing this and idd it cannot be done only by turning the HST! Let me state this correct: I do not question you, I only want to learn and maybe pick something up that can help me too! 🙂
At the moment, my biggest problem are the pellets. Those JSB’s .22 18 grainers are a pain in the ass.. The quality is from tin to tin so bad, that it is almost stupid that you have to buy them because 1 out of 10 is superb..
Hopefully it is less this way for you .25 KING guys 🙂

Hey OG. Chairgun has utility to input Fps numbers and it will graph for you as tight as you want.
I’m in concurrence with Dr Edgun. With as many shots as I have on mine now there is NO DOUBT that 890fps with 22 cal 18 JSB in my Eddy long is the most consistently accurate regardless of distance or wind. I have a 120 yrd shot that I test to and the conditions are from perfect to swirling 50mph winds. Anything over 890 it starts wobbling in the wind.

You don’t get to play in the “real world”: you shoot inside under controlled conditions. 925 fps if fine inside/outside if: there is NO wind.
I have spent many days at the local range testing different speeds at 100 yards. At 100 yards, anything over 950 is no good with or without wind. Diablo pellets just were not designed to go that fast.
Under absolutely perfect conditions, speeds from 935 down to 850 show about the same accuracy. I weigh sort all of my pellets to 0.1 grain and I have used a tin/tins of the same weight sorted pellets in a days testing. I shoot 5, 5 shot groups and then adjust the HST to a lower/higher speed, shoot again and compare the groups. While testing, I refill after 25 shots so I won’t get into any reg adjustment problems. I THINK that I have found that if the reg is off, it won’t start to show problems until after 25-30 shots. During my testing I always use my home made gun vise/chrony mount so there is not a chrony error from the gun shooting thru a different path on the chrony.
Any side wind at all will spread the groups out but, I think that I have found that speeds in the lower 880s are affected less.
Actually, speeds down around 850 do better with a side wind but; I am a power junky and I set my guns up at 885 or so.
All of the above is just what I THINK that I have found. There is no doubt in my mind that I could be totally wrong!
As far as just turning the HST down, you have a 22 and Ed set it up perfect before it was shipped. You could probably just turn the HST down, to get in the 880s, and be fine.
SOME, not all, of the R3 25 longs come set up shooting JSB 25.4 grain pellets at 950-1080. That is way too fast and just turning the HST down will really screw up a shot string! The reg has to be turned down also.
Bottom line; the 22s are set up fine; unless you are wanting it to shoot under 12 fpe. That is a whole different game and takes some major work.

I am helping a friend out with his R3 25 long. It was shooting JSB 25.4 grain pellets in the 1080s. It needed major adjusting of the reg and HST. Today, I got this shot string out of it.

69 shots with a 882 fps average, an extreme spread of 9 fps and a standard deviation of 2 fps isn’t too shabby!
I would really like for one of you computer gurus to turn that shot string into one of those fancy graphs and then post it here.

I would agree with you. Not broken and performs well don’t mess with it. Not everyone is receiving a tuned Edgun, that is one that shoots consistently with know expectations, I for one. If my recollection serves me my gun came to me shooting an extreme spread of 150 fps with less than a 40 shoot string. Adjusting the HST did not solve the issue. The reg had to be adjusted in order to get a balance between reg and HST. Now I get 70 shoots with 13fps extreme spread averaging 904 fps with accuracy from the R3 in .22 caliber. Now if my Eddy came to me shooting 925 with an extreme spread of only 6fps I too would not feel the need to play with the reg. Lucky you. Keep up the good shooting.
Having to adjust and tune gun was not a bad thing after all I got to know this gun much better and a confidence builder knowing I can work on it myself.

Now probably OG will tell me that I’m just stupid but… My new R3 does 925 fps for 60 shots with a max spread of 6fps.
Why on earth would I loose that fps when it groups good?
It seems that everybody wants his edgun to shoot 890fps, but why not try and see first what is working for you without all this hassle?
And second, why dazzling with the red? Just use the HST to lower the speed… Ok, maybe you would get 2 extra shots when you adjust the reg, but hey, if it shoots consistent, why trying to fix something that aint broken?
