Q:

New Barrel will not fit

I just bought a new barrel from Pyramyd and was going to slip it in this afternoon and dial it in. I take it out of the tube and drop the old one out and the damn bushings are too big(great job airforce)for it to fit in the Talon SS. I guess I’ll take a file to them and see if I can get it to fit. Anyone had a similar problem?

It is the 7th one down from the 1st post.

My barrel is very very tight. But only for a bit at the end. After I get it in a little bit it slides in pretty easily.

As per my instruction from select people, now that it’s in and working, I don’t touch it. 😀

I’m going to grab a caliper from work and measure the 12″ bushing and just send the 18″ back to pyramyd with the correct dimensions for the bushings and see if they can match it. What’s strange is that I had a 24″ barrel that fit perfectly and so does the 12″…I guess inspector # 9 fell asleep at the wheel that day. I’m glad you guys get a kick out of my avatar…I laugh everytime I see it as well.

Just send it back.

I would think you would rather risk screwing up a set of bushings over scewing up your frame? Btw that Avatar kills me everytime. LMAO!

I’m swapping out a 12 for an 18 so the bushings aren’t compatable…thought of that first. I shot an email to to pyramyd to see about replacement. I’m going to sand the inside of the gun in the morning and see what that does for me before fooling around with the bushings or sending it back to pyramyd.

You could dip the barrel in liquid nitrogen so the molecules get closer together, and heat the frame in a furnace so the molecules get farther apart. Then, just slide the barrel in, screw it down, let the temperature regulate, and it will all fit in well.

Seems to me like it’d work perfect.

lol
sounds great

take a look inside the frame before you do anything to the bushing, and see if the ridge on the top of the I/D in the frame is what is holding you up if so you could take a small chain saw file or “v grove” file and just notch were that ridge is on the bushings instead of decreasing the hole diameter of them

Is the hole for the setscrew for the end cap buggered? I’d start by sanding there lightly.

Is the breech cocked and safe during the install? It needs to be.

Just trying to explore the issue…

Are the bushings comparable in size to the ones on your old barrel?

Maybe take off the “old” bushings from your old barrel and install them on the new barrel and see how that goes? Maybe the old ones are tried and true for your frame.

Just doesn’t seem right that you gotta sand/grind the bushings down to fit.

Check for high spots around the bushing set screw area.

Later

I tried silicone grease and got it to slide in about half way down the first bushing but it wouldn’t go any further and I didn’t want to get it stuck. The way I see it I have two options…sand or send it back and hope the next one fits.

WAIT a minute there, compadre…. Before you start grinding away, try a little vaseline or silicone on the bushings. Twist back and forth while pushing in firmly. I’ve found that sometimes even a little paint overspray will keep things from sliding together smoothly. Sometimes it takes a little muscle, then things smooth out after that…

When it comes to AF guns, I’ve found that part of the Hippocratic Oath (the one that that doctors take) seems to apply:

“First, do no harm”. 😉

Go slow… you waited for the barrel and spent good money for it… now take a little time to scratch your head, figure it out and get it right.

Also, make sure you didn’t leave any grub screws in the frame.

Best of luck, post up with what you discover.
