Q:

New R3M Long .25 has issues upon arrival

The much anticipated R3M Long Edgun arrived today. Once I got home from work and unpacked it (great packing job), I checked the rifle over, read the manual, etc.

First thing I noticed is the walnut stock has an unattractive grayish stain, which looks like a water stain, under the fore grip. Well, OK that’s a cosmetic defect. Most stock makers wouldn’t use wood with that kind of anomaly. Character is one thing; this kinda looks like I left it in the rain. Still, it’s not functional.

The mechanical defect, so far, is the auto/self advancing mechanism does not advance the magazine fully; it misaligns the next pellet by quite a lot, enough to seriously deform the pellet. Yes, I’m pulling/rotating the handle back fully, the mag and selection lever (auto vs. manual) are correctly positioned. Tried both mags, same problem. You can tell the advancing mechanism isn’t rotating the mag fully because returning the handle forward jiggles/finishes rotating the mag into position, where it eventually lines up via the probe (after damaging any pellet’s head). Moreover, when the handle is pulled back fully, the mag does not click into position; I can use my finger to spin the mag a bit more and find the correct lining up, feel the “click”.

Disappointing, getting a new, expensive gun and finding defects right out of the box. Sure, I can manually advance pellets if I want to, but that’s not correct. Guess I’ll need to see what Tony wants me to do. Hopefully, he’ll issue a UPS call tag or send a label; I already paid to ship once. I’ll keep you all posted. Future Edgun buyers might want to see how the company handles these issues for my situation. Those of you getting the new shipment, you might want to check the advancing mechanism for correct pellet line up, in case it’s a batch issue. I got a .25 cal.

Wow. Your a lucky guy. My buddy works for a Harley dealership and has for ten years post retirement from fixing GMs with assembly or bad part problems at a GM plant and he claims nearly all Harleys have defects and need adjusting when they get them or the customers would scream. He said most come back with some problem with the first three months despite their best efforts. He said cars cant leave the plant like that.

Interesting analogy but when I drove my Harley out of the dealer, the pistons didn’t bend the valves, the bike moved when I cracked the throttle and the parts all stayed on even till this day.

You would make a good politician with statements like the one above. You have got to be the luckiest Harley owner on the friggn planet! 😯 With a HUGE pair of rose coloerd glasses. πŸ˜†

It sure as hell hasn’t been the case over the years. Band wagon my ass. Seems you have your own! πŸ™„ πŸ˜‰

I drove two Harleys out of the showroom as new and never had a problem as did most of my friends who I ride and rode with. Service has been excellent for me. In fact, I bored and stroked it, new heads and it still runs just fine. Rose colored glasses your ass! πŸ˜€

Ya, I see your point, I was really thinking more about the feelings I have for my Harley and the family of friends and riders that come with it. I have bought a few new ones over the last 20 years, a couple were perfect but a couple had issues that Harley dropped the ball on in my opinion, cam chain tensioner fiasco was a biggie to me for a company Harley’s size and the R&D budget they would have. I should reword that a little when I move this to a new thread.

Mine is working but not nearly perfectly, I actually do expect it to be clean slick and smooth. Like Ed’s fast shooting video of 36 rounds !! Cool video and they will work like that or Ed would not have published it !!! I decided to take mine apart, clean it up and analyze it’s working this evening, and see where the dragging feeling is coming from, I see two things that can make a difference and will add a couple pictures in a few minutes after I finish typing.

#1: My cam lever looks to me like it could be made just slightly different with less material ground away at the point/spot in which it engages the mag wheel tooth. As said above there is a limited side stroke available to do the work here and there looks like to me we can have no wasted movement. The tip of the cam lever blade looks to be hand tuned as in ground in on final assy. or tuning maybe, I can see kind of rough grinding marks as opposed to the nice polish on all other working faces. I will have a new one wire EDM’s out Monday and add some extra here to be available to tune it in with. If I had a spare I would just tig some hard steel to the face of it this weekend and work it in with a little fitting of it’s shape but I will have it duplicated first and work on the new one. Better to keep mine stock and original and have my original parts put up and work on the new one in case my logic is hot air and not valid.

#2: Is to dig down to see why this is not moving smoothly but for now I will just point to the the disc that is trapped between the bolt breech block and the retaining plate, this seems like the spot that is providing the un-smooth or dragging feel so more analysis is needed here.

I think the combination of the two will make this a very sweet working design. I love the beautifully simple design of how this is to all work together and it will.

I am a new EDgun owner but have followed closely since TED’S first video, ya, he got me hooked. I love the unique experience of having an Edgun and Ed’s designs in general. Once again ” beautifully simple “. At least for me I realize these are unique low production, small company manufactured firearms and I am not going to say that I am concerned by this, Ed will offer fixes in time or we can work on them ourselves, as well but in the end It is a simple mechanical device that is not working quite right and can be fixed. I will be sorting mine out and report my findings and progress, especially if I think it can help someone else on this forum. I am new here but it feels like family and that is part of the Edgun experience. Kind of reminds me why I have an 02 Harley Road king out in my shop I can never part with, I made it perfect where Harley fell short in a couple of places. I will re-disasseble mine in the next few minutes and take a couple of supporting pictures of what I am talking about and edit them into this post. Moping around ends now and the fixing starts. ” I hope, we’ll see πŸ™‚ “

MOVED AND EDITED MY COMMENTS HERE INTO TO A NEW THREAD, I AM GOING TO TRY TO RECTIFY THIS ISSUE AND DOCUMENT THE PROCESS THERE.

Yes during my cleaning and re lubing process i did cycle the bolt to see if I could spot what is going on. I am not a gunsmith nor a machinist and this is the first airgun ive torn into, so let me give it my best shot. The cam lever that the bolt slides through moves side to side and should cycle the mag to the next position where the ball bearing on the breech engages the detent on the mag. The cam lever only has so much room to move. It moves the complete distance but that is not enough to completely cycle the mag to the next position. When the bolt is closed, the tip of the probe either barely hits one of the mag splines or narrowly misses but since the bore of the mag is not centered the probe pushes the pellet which hits the top of the breech / barrel and distorts the pellet. It has gotten slightly better since i lubed everything and cleaned up some burs on the cam lever as well as some rust thst was on it but you can still see that it is still not cycling properly. Maybe this is like the 30 where it needs some wear in but I dont know. I will keep working on it and now that I have some time see what this is doing to the accuracy.

Im not bitching nor am I knocking Ed. I am simply reporting an issue that myself and a couple others have noticed. Earnest is looking into it and from what Ive been reading over the past year, aside from Ed, Earnest would be my next pick to figure out what the fix could be.

Hmmmm, you’re not “bitching” but you are writing about the problems. You are not “knocking Ed” but you are letting the world know of the shortfalls of the mechanics which are of course you’re opinion thus far. However, a few others have expressed concerns including myself.

My opinion: you are “bitching” (rightfully so) and you are “knocking Ed” (rightfully so). Ed is not the resurrected Jesus Christ and why must everyone feel the need to bow and kiss ass when subjects like this come up! Man up guys! There are perhaps serious issues and if the complaints are warranted then “bitching” and “knocking” are in order.

I’m going to do a thorough shooting session for a few hours this Sunday. It should work itself in by then. If not, we’ll worry about it then.

I can always reach out to some friends in Brighton Beach who can reach out and touch someone. 😈

Can’t you guys pull the breech off and turn it upside down and cycle it to see what’s going on?
There’s a video showing how the mag paw works. It’s pretty simple design. Things should move to coresponding positions and all points engaged. If not then it should be obvious what’s wrong.
Not saying its right but at least you will be or should be able to see.
Inquiring minds will be waiting.
