Q:

Now here’s a head-f**k.

I’ve just realized that the hole through my lathe (through the chuck and spindle) is a pissant 1.25″ (approx). So I can’t get even a measly 1.5″ bar through it.

So…that’s what steadies are for, right? So how come these steadies are made with blunt pieces of metal THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO REST AGAINST AND STEADY A SOFT PIECE OF METAL REVOLVING AT HIGH SPEED?!

What kind of FUCKWIT came up with that idea? “I know, we’ll steady the revolving work against blunt pieces of metal so we can hear the workshop windows shatter with the screech and watch the surface get torn to shreds.”

I’ve tried it with 2″ bar. Not only is it next to impossible to get the bar concentrically held in the chuck’s jaws, the steady does all of the above.

Am I to believe that a lathe of the size of mine is limited to bar no bigger than 1.25″? Or that I’m supposed to wreck my work on a standard non-roller steady? Because finding a roller-steady to buy is proving to be an act of futility. Lots of places showing you how to convert a non-roller to a roller though, further indicating that retail items are unavailable as a rule.

I’m truly baffled.

The usual idiots, please spare me the comedic dross, it’s getting old. Walt from Hawaii or Sean, two chaps who seem able to advise without the condescending trash-talk, I’m all ears. Please put me straight on this one. I’m about to fear I’ve bought a lemon of a lathe.

Hence my comments in the original post. Simply intended to put off the usual put-downs (“gentle ribbery”), not cause general offence. As I’ve said before, I don’t mind barracking in fun, but spite is something else altogether and eventually I’ll kick back.

So why begin with screaming at the person who designed a piece of tooling you have no clue of how it is used…?

You probably would have had more responses if you said “I am a total idiot, I can’t get this f’ing thing to work, what the hell am I doing wrong!!!”

But instead you mouthed off and then basically said I can’t laugh at myself and don’t post if you don’t have anything nice to say…

I taught myself to machine metal and I didn’t ask for much help, I went with the idea that if people have been using this stuff for almost 100 years it’s me who can’t use it when things go wrong.

If you spent as much time searching the web for machining answers as you do defending you hypocritical stance you would learn everything you needed to know…

Well said!

x2 for sure!!!!

Walter….

BTW was it you Lang that was the super quick learner when taking a trades machinist course or am I confusing you with someone else?

Now THAT’S funny. 😆

I wasn’t aware that there was a pecking order on this site, just a group of people who have known each other for many years and thus know how things are to be interpreted, and those that are newer to that experience. However, if there is a pecking order I’m right at the very top, and that means that what I say goes. What I am saying is that the comments made by members here are meant in good jest, but when you get pricked and affronted by those comments that is where you’ve gone wrong. The TAG and the TOG before it is about being the most knowledgeable area on the subject of AirForce rifles (and Machining) but wrapped up in a light-hearted sheaf of friendliness and gentle ribbery.

Lang, if you want help in a thread then ask for it and you shall receive it. Just don’t start out by calling people a bunch of idiots and half-wits as that really is uncouth and gets the whole thing off to a poor start.

I might have been able to believe that, but YN pretty much confirmed my suspicions with his admittance “It’s because you don’t listen and always think you know better” (or words to that effect). I think it’s fair to say that puts it other than as “gentle ribbery”. Clearly he feels he’s had his nose put out of joint by what he percieves as my “know it all” attitude, imagined or otherwise.

I apologise to anyone uninvolved who felt offended by my comments. They were aimed at a few specific individuals, not the membership as a whole. I figured the guilty few would know who they were.

Well Langnasen, It looks like you’ve out grown you laith already. It s time to start looking for something bigger, or do what I do, find a friend who’s got a big one. [I don’t mean nose]

😆 Baz, if I’d known I’d have laid down the extra £500 for the one with a 36mm bore. 😥

Ok, be prepared to be entertained by some true fvck-wittery.

After partially disassembling the mill I managed to get it’s head further up enough that I could get the vice under the cutter. Hoorah!

I then proceeded to mill the sear indent and drill & tap the cocking-bolt hole. Put the rifle together, it wouldn’t cock. Had a look, the indent was on the wrong end. 😳 Disassembled, cut the indent in the right end, reassembled the rifle, now the cocking-bolt was at the wrong end and I couldn’t get my thumb behind it. 😳 😳 Disassembled, drilled & tapped hole at the other end, all done and working sweet. 😀

I have excuses. Two hours sleep, too much stuff on my mind and I’m a noob anyway. 😆

It’s rough as hell, but it’s a first attempt and it does at least function 100%. The next one will be a looker too. I hope.

Any rhino would have got that impression, from everything you, and some others, have said. I’ve read a great deal of angst. Like a flock of pigeons into the midst of which has been introduced a cat. 😆

Your under the impression that you have stepped on toes or out of line and caused us some great anguish?

No…. Your just a funny little man on the internet that helps me pass my time.

Seems to me that since Lang had the online ‘tiff’ with Sean, a few people have been riding Lang pretty good. And certainly not in the ‘friendly ribbing’ type way. I know Lang is very colourful in his prose, and very forthright in his opinions, but i see no evidence of him being the instigator in any of these online slagging matches bar the Sean episode, which is OLD news as far as Sean and Lang are concerned. Lang should of kept the issue with Sean to PMs imo. People wanted to defend Sean and in doing so attacked Lang. Lang defended himself and so offended other people.

And long after its all settled down, new shit crops up. I’ve been reading the post up to this point without saying owt, but its getting to the point of cringe worthy school yard bullying.

Yes, to those looking for a new target for sport, they will find Lang very entertaining, as he won’t back down and will always fight his corner. But its getting real old.

Mind-set now seems to be that whatever Lang posts/says, its an opportunity to have a dig.

I havn’t got a beef with anyone, and as someone said earlier, i ignore what i don’t like and gleen as much info as i can whilst enjoying the cyber company of some very funny and intelligent guys.

So, i’m a target now i guess, but i was born with a teflon back so no matter! 😆

I like how you put your point across – no long words or mention of IQ’s to try and belittle people and inflate your own apparant intelligence, calling anyone an idiot or “sheep” for doing something the “comformist” way….

I dont really care about the tiff that Langa had with Sean I just like quoting from that particular thread – If you’ll read my responses you’ll see no malice towards Langa. – up to a certain point I was siding with him, but then he went a little loopy.

I think the actual turning point for me was when Langa declared that making a regulator was easy….. Such arrogance from a guy one minute, and then the next he’s asking the most elemantary questions. For a moment I thought he knew what he was talking about… until for example he starts saying that theres no need to measure things, you can just eyeball. Quite a few folks tried to explain that you cant do that ANDexpect to make a precision device… and they get ridiculed and accused of being in a clique… The same happened about cutting threads, the lathe and so on.

He’s often boastful of how smart he is… so one might assume he could take a bit of heat and dish it back and we’d have a grand old time…. I guess I was wrong.

Oh, and while were on the subject of people being against Langa – The free breech I mailed you at Langa’s request and at my own expense, that you then proceeded to offer away… Your welcome !

Anything I say is in whatever context requires it. But as that’s often a subjective thing I guess you’re free to call it whatever you like. But using “long words” to try and belittle people? Oh puh-leese.

I said a regulator was easy? I said MY design would be easy, on account of it being an extremely crude solution. Eyeball stuff? Yes, in the context of machine, test-fit, machine, test-fit, until a fit is achieved. But I guess you thought I meant I could eyeball dimensions. Maybe your hostility is due to an inability to clearly comprehend my written words? Or you choose to focus on what irks you and ignore anything else. Like my words where I expressed Mike’s design to be far beyond any ability I’d probably ever be able to muster. Or where I said I wouldn’t go near machining a barrel. Damned as a fool for saying I think I CAN do something, damned as a fool for saying I think I CAN’T do something. You want it both ways, eh? Whatever suits your argument.

I think it’s more about any newbie’s confidence being taken as an affront. Hmm? Not observing the pecking-order. You know, all that old human-nature junk. I suppose I could have played up to it. Or down to it as the case would more accurately have been. But then I guess I thought people like Walt would have been more of the norm around here rather than the exception. A man sure enough of himself to rise above the apparent foibles of others. To paraphrase Kipling:

“If you can talk with idiots and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings and not lose the common touch…”

Delicate egos are easily threatened, eh? I get that a lot. I suppose by now I should have gotten used to accounting for it and adjusted accordingly. But I guess that’s not in my nature. And why should it be? Pretend to be somebody I’m not, to please and mollify a bunch of people I’ll never meet? Damned if I’d want them to do likewise. I’d rather a person was honest in themselves and prepared to be taken as they’re found. Given enough time the chaff is usually shaken from the wheat and you get to see the real mark of them. But not here, huh? An early show of confidence…”Oooh, check out this cocky know-it-all fool!” Prejudice followed by hostility.

A good deal of the above applies to me too of course. It takes two to tango. But I’ll be damned if I’ll think I haven’t made an effort to keep it “all in good fun”, despite knowing very well where most of it has been coming from.

Walt, thankyou for your continued illumination. Funnily enough I was just this morning reading about collets (Workshop Technology Part-2, W.A.J. Chapman, current dumper-reading 😆 ). I looked-up ‘Mandrel’ last night, thinking it might be an adapter that allows a bigger piece of work to be held in a chuck of smaller bore. Nothing of the sort of course, I was misinformed by a vague memory. But I’ll investigate these collets, it sounds like they may work well with a roller-bearing steady. Your comments on the regular chuck are well received, it’s a relief to know how and why I’ve been finding what I’ve found. It’s information uncommonly found in books.
I’ll continue to post my progress, unless somebody decides to ban me, in the hope you’ll continue to guide me. Your temperance and dignity are an inspiration and I think anyone would be honoured to consider you their Sensei. 😀

Well …….i can’t be arsed 😯

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/ for info on how to use machinery 😆

Take it easy !

The collar that you screw the bottle into had shifted back slightly at the top, so the breech wasn’t contacting the tp squarely. It was Lang who spotted it in the end… 😳

What was the problem ?

Lol, i do seem to remember saying i’d take a photo..! As it turned out, breech wasn’t the prob. Newbee!! Got my head around the gun now, had it stripped that many times!!
