Offset Moderators Ed promised us?

Fudd dude come on I waited 13 months for a Lelya and .30. Now you want ed to change the moderator he just made? Ed just for the record I’ll take 2 of those in the video Fudd wants to be put on the waiting list for the second generation offset he photoshop’d :rofl:
My idea/design.
– Assume it’s disassembled like in Ed’s video
– Slide piece #1 over barrel
– Thread piece #2 onto piece #1 (can be done prior to or whatever)
– Thread piece #3 onto piece #2 (it’s just an aluminum tube so it’s cheap and the only varying piece between short/standard/long versions)
– Thread moderator onto barrel (still a floating design right?) using maybe a tool like how the Taipan end cap is installed
– End cap is conic and threaded over the moderator but the shroud inside edge is beveled say 45 degrees and allows a tension fit
So basically in this design, the end cap creates tension once installed and still allows for a floating barrel/moderator design. The only thing that changes from short/standard/long is an inexpensive tube of aluminum while all other remaining parts of this new eccentric moderator remains the same, hence not much added cost. Vent it and/or stuff the now newly created volume with sound deadening crap and it will further improve the effectiveness.

Yeah, for those wondering the 2nd and 3rd pics I posted aren’t real. It’s a photoshop of Keyser’s .30. Despite what Keyser said, I still think it can be done and retain the floating barrel/tension design of existing Matadors. Maybe it requires redesigning the screw on mod to attach to the barrel and float both the barrel with attached mod via a tension end cap? You just need an imagination and deep pockets, that’s all.
Ed is a brilliant designer and he’ll make it work. The question is if it’s worth the effort?
Donny, Dman or Ernest who own a lathe should experiment with this design! Make a eccentric mod using drop in baffles.

As a guy who owns a R3 .30 (Fudd used a photo of my gun in this thread) I can tell you that the Photoshop version wouldn’t work. The shroud behind the offset has a special fit and a long with the barrel nut it tensions the free float barrel. I think ed has it right. When Hemn asked ed about making these I made sure to request that these would retrofit current R3s. Hemn made it a point to ask Ed for it to fit into our current guns. Why make the moderator fatter longer? It would just be wasted space as the barrel length would remain the same.
So I say Ed has it right. Simple and effective that’s what makes an EDgun an EDgun. It’s why I own them. Ed knows what he’s doing. Let’s not try and reinvent the R3

Personally, I like all of the designs shown, long, standard, and short. There are two problems involved….I couldn’t afford to buy them, and Ed can’t reasonably manufacture all possible design variations his buyers desire.
We must remember Ed still runs a one man shop. It’s amazing to me that he comes up with as many innovations that he does.
If we want a variation on one of his designs, then it is up to us to approach our local technicians to provide a “work-around” to get us where we want to be. We have people who can produce a shroud tube and barrel nut arrangement to get us near the length we desire.

That’s correct but it looks like shit and could be more effective if design as I’ve suggested. I know an uncle that gives a hoot that would agree with me. :2cents:
What I’m proposing to Ed doesn’t change the internals of this new eccentric moderator. What will change is how it’s attached to the barrel. The shroud covering the moderator will need to be longer and some sort of tophat will need to be fitted so air can be vented to the larger volume/space behind the end of the barrel. Add a few pin holes back there to further vent the excess air. Make it cool like a Huggett or something.
– The ends of Edgun barrels are already threaded. Just allow for the eccentric moderator internals to screw directly onto the barrels so alignment/clipping issues are nonexistent.
– The moderator shroud sides over it and screws into the tapered adapter thing that I previously circled (can be held onto the barrel via grub screws).
– Shorten the barrel shroud down to just a few inches like I’ve shown in the pic.
The main point is, there’s no change to length of the barrel and no impacts to FPE. All of this should be a piece of cake to Ed. Hell, if I had the machining skills and tools, I’d just do it myself but I don’t have that ability.

I REALLY like the look of that longer offset moderator in your pic. Makes the gun look more balanced.
I’m just thinking about a couple of things in order to achieve this look. To get the longer mod wouldn’t you have to cut the barrel back 6-8 inches? If each inch removed means a 10-12 fps reduction in velocity, then you’d have to increase the setting on the reg to regain your FPS, which would defeat the purpose cuz now you’re releasing MORE air into a bigger moderator. Seems like a wash to me, but what you do gain is a damn nice looking Matador.
I don’t own the offset Moderator so I could be completely off base here but please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m here to learn. :smilen:

Any reason why you can’t design the shroud part to be shorter and the moderator to overlap the barrel to give the whole thing more volume like this?
I’ve love to get a shortie like this but as an R3M.
