open carry in california
can someone tell me the laws here…i have read, but my english when it comes to laws and lawyer formulated text i come up short
i know guns open or concealed on school grounds, goverment buildings etc is a no no….
bt what if im walking in a park…say FORT ORD, or a local park outside the city’s (not talking about the small lawns with tress in the middle of the citys….im talking hiking places…etc…
what is ok what is not….
what would you do, and what wouldnt you do….
im thinking hip or leg holster (those lowered from the belt by 5-10″ to rest on the thigh
hip holsters are they ok if covered by a jacket or does it have to be fully visible ?
may it be loaded ready to go

Hey all, just thought I would drop over from calguns.net and leave you the link to my open carry blog. Veral Smith says that a 240grain WFN going 1200fps is good for anything you will hunt in North America, and that full-house loads aren’t necessary.
the 44mag being too hard to shoot….yes its not a round i would shoot all day long thats for sure think 200 rounds is pretty comfy in the taurus..but then it has a nice rubber grip, and porting to control it a bit….the mod 29 has hardwood grips, and the backstrap is in contact with your hand…
i can see why he would prefer 44sp through the gun, its very mild…and you can even go 44sp cowboyloads which are even lighter.
once i get my reloading press i dont think i will be making ,any full blown saami spec rounds, more likely something between 44sp and 44mag for my self, and something like 44sp for the wife
I have to revise my earlier statement. It looks like it was only in the first picture that the 41 mag was used and only for part of the film.

Another version of the Dirty Harry gun story: In the scene where we see Inspector Callahan drawing his oversized revolver for the first time, the gun used was a Smith and Wesson Model 29 in .44 Magnum with an 8 3/8″ barrel, but subsequent shooting (both with the cameras and the gun) was conducted using a Smith and Wesson Model 25 in .45 Long Colt with a 6″ barrel. In Texas, and most other states that have CCW, if the wind lifts your shirt, you have not broken the law. You are required to keep it covered. However, an unexpected sudden gust would be an act of nature. However you are required to take every precaution. In other works, if the wind is blowing, you are required to attempt to keep it concealed.
Cali. has an agreement with Texas. There fore I can legally carry concealed in Cali. However, Lapd will arrest in total disregard of the law. What is strange, is that a Cali resident will have a very hard time getting a permit in La. , where as I-a non citizen of the state can legally carry there. Strange. Very strange.
Mr C. Eastwood carried a blued 6″ Mod. 29 .44 mag. in the DH movies. He wanted a 8″ bbl. but S&W was short on production. It was his personal revolver. In the movies, blanks were of course used. Mr. Eastwood however preferred to shoot .44 S&W Specials in his revolver, saying that the recoil was too stiff in the .44mag enjoy.
I carried a 6″ 41 mag. while on the Sheriff’s department for years. Hand loaded with 170 gr. Sierra Hollow Cavity rounds loaded over 21 gr’s of H 110 powder. Stiffer than any factory .44 loading. 😈 The guns, are identical other than the bore dia. There fore, the thicker walls of the .41 can take higher pressure than the .44.
I still bare the scars on the knuckle of my right thumb from all the hot rounds driving the cylinder latch into it in rapid double action shooting.

I learned not long ago that that Mark Wahlberg is a big anti gun knucklehead.
I really liked allot of his movies and to learn that just made me cringe. Talk about a hypocrite.

Its true, at least on the revolvers. The Automag only came in 44 I believe. Ive shot both and the 41 is so much smoother than the 44. Again though, why couldnt you just put lighter loads in the 44?
I just checked, I only see 44 and the company is for sale for 100 grand.

Its a shame Dirty Harry really was wielding a 41 mag in most if not all of those pictures. They said it was for the reduced recoil but I dont understand why. Its not like blanks are hot loads.

Cygnus I am sure you hav seen the movie “Dirty Harry” but I still feel obligated to inform you that it is required viewing when taking ownership of any .44 Magnum. You are obligated to watch that movie if you have not done so already.
This is the best part of the movie, along with the soundtrack.

i did see the ranger out where SP uses to shoot…i was shooting my rapid…he said nothing on the first pass….on the second pass some hours later he commented about lying in the dirt in an asbestos infected area…
ohh for those who dont know theres 2 types aof asbestos, one dangerous and rarely at the surface, but can be mined….the other common at the surface, and has not been linked to any diseases…or so the internet tells me
and no i wasnt thinking of strolling down main st with a huge revolver strapped to my leg….how ever much i would lke to 😉
When i hunt Ground Squirrels in the National Forest which has bears, i always holster my Glock 10mm with some HOT loads. When i go to the desert and shoot Jacks, i don’t really need a sidearm but, i holster 1 anyway. Both are LEGAL to do. I hate to really say this to anyone living in CALI but, I HAVE NEVER EVER SEEN ANY TYPE OF AUTHORITY IN ANY NATIONAL FOREST or DESERT or ANYWHERE ever since i have been in CALI hunting. NEVER?? Do they even exist here? HE HE. I know they do but i never ever see and FOREST RANGERS or NATIONAL FORESTRY AGENTS or anyone but damned DIRTBIKERS (AARRGGGH!!)

The only way I’d open carry or recommend it would be when hiking in cougar/bear country.
I’d just get a concealed carry permit for carrying anywhere else if I cared to do so.
A shotgun is the best first line of defense for anything I can think of. However you must have it handy to bring it into action.
That is why a revolver on the hip is popular for salmon/steelehead fishing in Oregon; it’s right there at hand all the time while fishing when the shotgun has been set down with the pack yards away.
