Q:

Powermax Hi-Pac unit for the 2240

I have been playing with the 2240 platform for a couple of months now. 80 Grit got me hooked on this gun with his excellent articles here on the TAG, and then I joined the Crosman air pistol owners forum, and I was beyond help.

What I am about to review is controversial, this subject has been banned on some forums. This may piss some off, so let me say ahead of time.

Go fuck yourself, we have freedon of speech on the TAG.

Now for the review.

I had read about a unit that would replace the front cap on the tube of the 2240 pistol and turn it into a HPA system, it consisted of a couple hammer springs a seal for the front of the 2240 valve and the tube that screws into the 2240.

So I ordered it, it is $47.00 to your mail box and took from Saturday to Thursday to get here.

The part of the unit that goes into the gun looks like and replaces the CO2 cartridge, the part that sticks out, resembles just about any other HPA system in that it is longer of course than the 2240 tube and it has a quick connect fill nipple on it.

http://www.Powermax Hi Pac.com claims that this self contained system will take pressures of 3000 PSI and that you do not have to fill it to that pressure and you may if you wish just go to 2000 PSI. The Owner of this company specifically states that is you go further than 2000 PSI, you need to anchor your valve.

Now that is not news to anyone who is familiar with this system, but it seems folks who are more knowledgeable than me take offense to that information, or feel this tube may not take that pressure, although many are using the rolled stamped 2240 tube at that 3000PSI level.

Before I got the kit, I drilled and tapped my tube /valve and put two more 8×32 screws into the valve to anchor it.

So today I got the kit. First thing I did was to shoot out the CO2 in my pistol and chrony the results as I did it. My FPS with 18 gr exacts went for 480 down to 450FPS before I vented what CO2 was left and went inside to install the unit.

Putting the unit in is pretty straight forward, you unscrew the tube cap, set it aside, drop the spent cartridge out of the tube, put a drop of airgun oil on the tip of the unit that looks like a CO2 cartridge, just like you would do with a CO2 cartridge, and screw it in HAND TIGHT. Yes only hand tight, it seals up at that point.

I filled it up to 2000PSI waiting to jump when it exploded, it did not and I went shooting.

I ran a string over my Chrony, I only got 6 useful shots at 2000 PSI, but they were in the 600 FPS range with 18 grain exacts. I was impressed.

I replaced the hammer spring in my gun with the red one that comes with the kit and is to be used if you go over 2000 PSI, I have a Mellon Power adjuster/stock adapter and had to turn down the teat on the adjustment screw for the spring to slip over it.

I refilled to 2500 and stepped outside to the chrony.

I fired my first shot and what came to mind was “Holy Fucking Shit, 700 plus FPS” It did not last long, only about 6 shots until I was dropping out of the 630 range, but I was impressed.

I backed off on the hammer spring adjustment, refilled and got the following string. 680,684 685,683,681,677 and then it dropped off into the 650 and lower range.

I will fill this unit to 3000PSI later, after I have replaced the seal in the front of the valve with the supplied one that came with the kit.

I have a 14 inch barrel on my gun, so at 2500 PSI I have 6 shots in the 18.5 FPE range. If I fill to 3000 PSI I will be in the 20 FPE range. Tuning the gun for 680 FPS at a 3000 PSI fill will most likely result in more usable shots at that velocity range.

This is my first entry into the 2240 HPA arena, but the unit does what the man says it does.

As far as the controversy about the unit or the company’s owner attitude about defending his product, I can’t say, but it has pissed others off.

All I can say is it works for me.

Yeah, the wife and I were just doing the Yahoo Messenger with her family, we both have web cams so we get to see each other live, gawd but it looked hot there, those little kids grow so fast, I wish I could be there with them right now.

It was watching all those Philippine toads in the street last summer that got me interested in air rifles, that and all the scrawny cats!

and thats the love of it RC…
myself I do love toying with shit
some do
most dont
you and I are products of our generations and our ladies our products of thier environments
just sent another C note to mine in Mindanao
she should be fine for beans, rice & hotdogs for thier nasty flip “spaggatti” for a couple weeks 😉

Joe,

That is a beautiful gun!

He has two springs one for 2000 psi and one for 3000 psi. What their rated strength is I have no idea. I used mine that I had first, and then went directly to the 3000PSI one when I filled to 2500 PSI.

Yeah, I don’t get a lot of shots, and the first one is weaker, today I noticed that I would see the first shot 30 fps slower with a 3000psi fill, so I am only going to 2800 or so.

One of the things I did with it today was to try the 25 grain Monsters. I got 600 FPS with them, which puts me at 20 FPE.

What I need for this little gun is a good pump, I don’t use too much air filling the very small chamber with my cascade system, but I am wasting the air to bleed the two hoses in the system.

Now that is airgun logic at its finest, 5 dollar a tank fills so I will go out and buy a 200 dollar pump 😆 But honestly I have been thinking about a pump lately.

What I can say about this system that makes it worth playing with, is you can go back to co2 cartridges easily or go to bulk fill easily and your only out $47.00.

Now yesterday I did have valve lock, but not with this. I bought a CO2 adapter just for the Condor valve, I spent the night before porting it, a litlle to much of the “porting it” it seems.

First shot did not even let out air, took 30 or 40 dry fires to get the velocity to 1000 FPS, then the stem snapped in two by the ports, first time I have had valve lock that I can remember with the AF guns, and no it is a new designed Condor valve..

So I ordered a new stem and a new valve seat from AF.

Live and learn, but it is all fun.

Roach,

I don’t know what kind of spring weights he provides with the kit, but one problem I find is that if I try to tune the gun for a low to mid range fps on a 3000 psi fill pressure…I am basically wasting my time. I find too many wasted “valve lock” shots, and even if I get past the “valve lock” issue to a decent starting fps…I find that the ES is way too high. I am not expert on these (I am learning as I go) I am just telling you what I have experienced with these 22xx on HPA. I guess it all boils down to what ES is acceptable to you or what ES will not affect POI through the shot count.

Nice job Roach! I thought about one of those kits…but I ultimately thought that for only 20.00 more a stainless steel 2260 tube is the better bet. You can more power out of a stainless set up with a disco valve. I have yet to try the B&A “max flow” replacement valve for the disco…I don’t want to spend the change if it isn’t going get me much more power.

Anyway, this little pistola got me 28fpe for 15 shots on a 3000 psi fill. I also set it up with a lighter spring and a 1700 SP and I got a (I think) around 25 shots in the power range you are getting.

In my opinion the Marauder pistol will spur little in the way of new custom bits as there is not much that can be modified about it that hasn’t already been done to the 22XX.

For example its still retaining that crappy 22XX grip frame assembly but there are pleaty of options already for improving that ranging from out right replacement to high quality custom lock work
and no I do not buy into the garbage about it having a “Marauder” trigger

so what can be done unique to the pistol?
maybe an adapter to use various paintball or AR stocks as the 2289 style stocks are really trashy
perhaps a replacement shroud tube made from Carbon fiber
maybe a checkered cocking “knob” that would replace the bolt handle as one really doesn’t need it on a pistol…something similar to the SOE welrod below
another idea would be looking into adapting the Pachmyer forends off the Remington 870 to the pressure tube of the pistol. Have to do some work but it does appear doable then couple it with the Pachmyer AR grip.
personally with work, providing the barrels are decent I do think it will make the basis of seriously neat carbines that have the potential of giving Rancheros a serious run for their money but I doubt they will do it out of the box
outfitted with the doodads I just mentioned, an ACE side folder and Blue fork lower it would make for a very unique sub carbine.
the potential is certainly there
all that said such a custom project will be money ahead by buying a used rifle…{seen them already in the 300 and under range} selling the stock and trigger group for a C note or more then cutting everything down and adding the custom bits where needed and/or desired.
doing it that way can result in a totally unique piece at a significant savings over purchasing the pistol at retail.
heres a close up of the breech knob of a WWII British SOE Welrod silenced assassination pistol in .32acp:
would streamline the design a great deal…

Where is Nuglor, anyway?

Nice gun and nice work.

I bet the Marauder HPA Pistol, when it’s released, will spur more customization… with a 3000psi platform the sky is the limit. Exciting times for AG and customized AG.
