Q:

Powermax Hi-Pac unit for the 2240

I have been playing with the 2240 platform for a couple of months now. 80 Grit got me hooked on this gun with his excellent articles here on the TAG, and then I joined the Crosman air pistol owners forum, and I was beyond help.

What I am about to review is controversial, this subject has been banned on some forums. This may piss some off, so let me say ahead of time.

Go fuck yourself, we have freedon of speech on the TAG.

Now for the review.

I had read about a unit that would replace the front cap on the tube of the 2240 pistol and turn it into a HPA system, it consisted of a couple hammer springs a seal for the front of the 2240 valve and the tube that screws into the 2240.

So I ordered it, it is $47.00 to your mail box and took from Saturday to Thursday to get here.

The part of the unit that goes into the gun looks like and replaces the CO2 cartridge, the part that sticks out, resembles just about any other HPA system in that it is longer of course than the 2240 tube and it has a quick connect fill nipple on it.

http://www.Powermax Hi Pac.com claims that this self contained system will take pressures of 3000 PSI and that you do not have to fill it to that pressure and you may if you wish just go to 2000 PSI. The Owner of this company specifically states that is you go further than 2000 PSI, you need to anchor your valve.

Now that is not news to anyone who is familiar with this system, but it seems folks who are more knowledgeable than me take offense to that information, or feel this tube may not take that pressure, although many are using the rolled stamped 2240 tube at that 3000PSI level.

Before I got the kit, I drilled and tapped my tube /valve and put two more 8×32 screws into the valve to anchor it.

So today I got the kit. First thing I did was to shoot out the CO2 in my pistol and chrony the results as I did it. My FPS with 18 gr exacts went for 480 down to 450FPS before I vented what CO2 was left and went inside to install the unit.

Putting the unit in is pretty straight forward, you unscrew the tube cap, set it aside, drop the spent cartridge out of the tube, put a drop of airgun oil on the tip of the unit that looks like a CO2 cartridge, just like you would do with a CO2 cartridge, and screw it in HAND TIGHT. Yes only hand tight, it seals up at that point.

I filled it up to 2000PSI waiting to jump when it exploded, it did not and I went shooting.

I ran a string over my Chrony, I only got 6 useful shots at 2000 PSI, but they were in the 600 FPS range with 18 grain exacts. I was impressed.

I replaced the hammer spring in my gun with the red one that comes with the kit and is to be used if you go over 2000 PSI, I have a Mellon Power adjuster/stock adapter and had to turn down the teat on the adjustment screw for the spring to slip over it.

I refilled to 2500 and stepped outside to the chrony.

I fired my first shot and what came to mind was “Holy Fucking Shit, 700 plus FPS” It did not last long, only about 6 shots until I was dropping out of the 630 range, but I was impressed.

I backed off on the hammer spring adjustment, refilled and got the following string. 680,684 685,683,681,677 and then it dropped off into the 650 and lower range.

I will fill this unit to 3000PSI later, after I have replaced the seal in the front of the valve with the supplied one that came with the kit.

I have a 14 inch barrel on my gun, so at 2500 PSI I have 6 shots in the 18.5 FPE range. If I fill to 3000 PSI I will be in the 20 FPE range. Tuning the gun for 680 FPS at a 3000 PSI fill will most likely result in more usable shots at that velocity range.

This is my first entry into the 2240 HPA arena, but the unit does what the man says it does.

As far as the controversy about the unit or the company’s owner attitude about defending his product, I can’t say, but it has pissed others off.

All I can say is it works for me.

Rob3dr or pauluski??

One more time??

Remember this one, I got it shooting 670, 680, for 13 shots on a co2 cartridge put one of those piano wire springs in and cut about a coil and 1/2 off the end, who can remember whos gun this used to be

you don’t know the half of it…
Have projects spread across a dozen States…
Setting this one up as a pistol with an optional Boyds laminated thumbhole as don’t see much sence in right handed breeches on either pistols or thumbhole stocked repeater rifles shot off a bipod

as far as a repeater pistol I am building this one simply because I detest how bulky, read thick the Marauder pistol will be due to its pressure tube diameter.
You may want to consider one of these breeches as he is tooling them up shortly for the Crosman 22XX tube…just shorten up a Discovery tube and get a decent quality barrel. They are already a riser so you could run one of the full length shrouds on them

Cost when all is said and down would be in the same range as a box stock Marauder pistol only it would be mostly custom bits
read superior to Crosman mass production die cast and plastic

WOK,

After I am gone, she has been instructed not to marry, due to the fact she would loose my pension and SOC.

And WOK you do not want to spend the rest of your life hearing about what a great guy I was, and wondering in the middle of the night if you will ever be able to measure up, so to speak. 🙁

Roachcreek

I would not mind since we would be spending your pension 😀

operative words: “two more”
which means a total of three screws anchoring the valve assembly

sheesh 😆

Oh My God…..

You do know how to use quotes when copy and pasting somebody else’s words 😯

Now that is the best news all day 😛

Riverside,

You do come up with some great projects.

Rob,

To this day when I fill my AF guns, I know my blood pressure must rise 15 points. I know it is safe, but I have a healthy respect for it, just like powersaws and geen colts, all accidents waiting to happen.

The other day I did not fully seat the fill probe on my Etac and it came off in the middle of a fill, a little pink washer of flesh fell out my pants leg as I squeezed off about 2 inches of asshole as I jumped. 😆

I am undecided on the next one, whether a Disco build or just buy the Mrod pistol, a repeater would be nice, I have 8 airguns and no repeaters, perhaps a legacy of my Sharps rifle days.

Tofazu,

Mine wold not cock either until I released some of the tension with the power adjuster, without the poweradjuster, I would have had to cut some coils to use those springs, my instructions did mention that.

I notice I have a few threads left over on the tube also, but it is in contact with the valve and that is where it is supposed to be. Are you saying it would not screw in far enough to make contact with the valve?

Perhaps the trouble your having is why folks are not happy with him, having had no problems to be serviced, I can’t complain

Roachcreek

I’ve made a few conversions using a 2250 tube and disco internals…. quite fun to do. I set mine up for around 1600psi and use lighter springs and a HDD to maximize shots.

Fun stuff playing with these… do be careful though.

RC:
waiting on this new breech, special order left hand QB repeater…being fitted with a chunk off the front of a LW .22 Condor barrel measuring some 13″ with an early series German HW moderator

it will be going on a modified stainless steel Mountain Air HPA tube, modified valve out of a CaptChur Tranquilizer Dart rifle and a Blue Fork lower
Hoping to get some impressive numbers out of it
don’t know what the heck to call it tho as there won’t be a Chinese part in the entire build

Glad your worked for you. THe tube worked and when filled it made the EXACT same POWER as the CO2. Then i put in the Green spring and it made a little less than what came with my gun. I then installed the RED spring and the gun absolutely would not cock as in my particular gun, his spring seemed to have too many coils to even cock.

Also, the HPA tube did not screw all the way into my guns CO2 tube. I emailed the guy a few times with no reply what so ever.

Glad yours works for you. Thats great.

But as far as i’m concerned, he is another dirty business man. And he probably will say what most folks SEEM TO SAY NOWADAYS……………………………”I NEVER GOT ANY EMAILS FROM YOU”. Yeah right, technology is too far advanced for that crap.

Post script:

I tore it all down and redrilled the anchor screws to 10×24’s and put in the new seal for the 3000PSI presure.

At 3000PSI you can get 10 or so shots in the 17 to 18 FPE level.

One question.

Did you secure your valve with 2 more bolts? That is what I did even for CO2 on my 2240.

IIRC the valve is only held in with a wimpy bolt.
