Q:

Powermax Hi-Pac unit for the 2240

I have been playing with the 2240 platform for a couple of months now. 80 Grit got me hooked on this gun with his excellent articles here on the TAG, and then I joined the Crosman air pistol owners forum, and I was beyond help.

What I am about to review is controversial, this subject has been banned on some forums. This may piss some off, so let me say ahead of time.

Go fuck yourself, we have freedon of speech on the TAG.

Now for the review.

I had read about a unit that would replace the front cap on the tube of the 2240 pistol and turn it into a HPA system, it consisted of a couple hammer springs a seal for the front of the 2240 valve and the tube that screws into the 2240.

So I ordered it, it is $47.00 to your mail box and took from Saturday to Thursday to get here.

The part of the unit that goes into the gun looks like and replaces the CO2 cartridge, the part that sticks out, resembles just about any other HPA system in that it is longer of course than the 2240 tube and it has a quick connect fill nipple on it.

http://www.Powermax Hi Pac.com claims that this self contained system will take pressures of 3000 PSI and that you do not have to fill it to that pressure and you may if you wish just go to 2000 PSI. The Owner of this company specifically states that is you go further than 2000 PSI, you need to anchor your valve.

Now that is not news to anyone who is familiar with this system, but it seems folks who are more knowledgeable than me take offense to that information, or feel this tube may not take that pressure, although many are using the rolled stamped 2240 tube at that 3000PSI level.

Before I got the kit, I drilled and tapped my tube /valve and put two more 8×32 screws into the valve to anchor it.

So today I got the kit. First thing I did was to shoot out the CO2 in my pistol and chrony the results as I did it. My FPS with 18 gr exacts went for 480 down to 450FPS before I vented what CO2 was left and went inside to install the unit.

Putting the unit in is pretty straight forward, you unscrew the tube cap, set it aside, drop the spent cartridge out of the tube, put a drop of airgun oil on the tip of the unit that looks like a CO2 cartridge, just like you would do with a CO2 cartridge, and screw it in HAND TIGHT. Yes only hand tight, it seals up at that point.

I filled it up to 2000PSI waiting to jump when it exploded, it did not and I went shooting.

I ran a string over my Chrony, I only got 6 useful shots at 2000 PSI, but they were in the 600 FPS range with 18 grain exacts. I was impressed.

I replaced the hammer spring in my gun with the red one that comes with the kit and is to be used if you go over 2000 PSI, I have a Mellon Power adjuster/stock adapter and had to turn down the teat on the adjustment screw for the spring to slip over it.

I refilled to 2500 and stepped outside to the chrony.

I fired my first shot and what came to mind was “Holy Fucking Shit, 700 plus FPS” It did not last long, only about 6 shots until I was dropping out of the 630 range, but I was impressed.

I backed off on the hammer spring adjustment, refilled and got the following string. 680,684 685,683,681,677 and then it dropped off into the 650 and lower range.

I will fill this unit to 3000PSI later, after I have replaced the seal in the front of the valve with the supplied one that came with the kit.

I have a 14 inch barrel on my gun, so at 2500 PSI I have 6 shots in the 18.5 FPE range. If I fill to 3000 PSI I will be in the 20 FPE range. Tuning the gun for 680 FPS at a 3000 PSI fill will most likely result in more usable shots at that velocity range.

This is my first entry into the 2240 HPA arena, but the unit does what the man says it does.

As far as the controversy about the unit or the company’s owner attitude about defending his product, I can’t say, but it has pissed others off.

All I can say is it works for me.

Thats awesome……

Can I have your wife when you are dead?

😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Just my opinion
but I see a great deal of anal retentive nose picking regarding HPA & safety online
an example was the thread on this forum regarding hydo testing your AF tanks
now I can understand a bit of it but some of it gets a bit out there
actually it wouldn’t be a great deal different than re-proof testing firearms every so many years
only re-proving I am aware of outside some nations military armories and then only after total rebuilds was being done by the English when they re-tubed or sleeved a shotgun.

think on it…a firearm is subject to much sharper stress, the term is birsance yet there seems little to no concern over shooting 19th century manufactured firearms with suspect metalurgy in many cases
look at the Pawn Stars jackasses
keep hoping that fat bastard “Chum Lee” will lose a finger or two one day as 17th & 18th centrury cast bronze barrels really should Not be shot
{do know of two different tower flint naval blunderbuss’s that let go at early redezvous back in the early 70s}
Steel? I still shoot a high end twenty bore Ketland flint fowler, ca. 1780’s

how many catasrophic failures of AGs have we really seen?
Heck I was running high end antique big bores that used ball flasks years ago
did I take the flasks out to have the Hydro tested?
nope, rolled the dice and never had a failure

I dont know about running sustained 3K pressures in a 22XX tube but really dont see much of an issue with 2K fills
as I recall I think Walter did some testing on Discovery tubes and found them a great deal stronger than what many self annoited experts on the Yellow had assumed and I assume the same is likely true of the roll marked 22XX tube…
just not to the same degree

That’s a really nice rig you built. Yours compares favorably to Mountain Air’s MA2250 hunter which only fills to 2000psi and gets 8-9 good shots in the 18fpe range with 14.3 cp’s.

Thanks for this info on the conversion kit. I didn’t know about it.

The new upcoming 10.5″ or 17.5″ powermax hi-pacs will increase the shot count.

I wonder how many shots the Mrod pistol will get.

that there unit is unsafe my friend
you need to get rid of it ASAP

i can dispose of it for you for a small fee

nice numbers low shot but hey its only like 20 pumps to make it back up right

it was with one of my 22xx builds
well hopefully by saturday my new toy arrives
i got a Mtn Air 2250xt airsource
but the airsouce fitting has been fitted to accomadate a 9oz co2 tank so i can get roughly 300 shots in the 680 range
it has a24 in bbl but i dont mind it
its a nice lil carbine type for pesting shit round the house where i can fire my powder burners
i plan to get a pump and a 13 CI regged tank also pretty soon
prolly after 1st of the year ill order that up then i can use HPA on it with around 900 psi reg i should get nice shot count and consistant power and accuracy
