pressure 22air vs 22LR
Hi, can anyone tell me how is it possible that a .22 airgun (modified condor for example) can shoot almost at same velocity (1100 fps and more) as 22LR when using same 40grain bullets. The pressure which airgun operates is 2000-2900 psi vs pressue in 22lr chamber is arund 22000 psi. My guess would be that when bullet travels down the barrel airgun gives that 2000psi all the way to the end vs 22lr gives this 22000 psi only at the beginning, am i on the right track?

The Hoff disagrees –

Please post some of those pics if possible. What a beaut.
Walter..
Very nice and PLEASE post more of your airgun ideas. Very happy to digest them.
Walter….
I think Shadoh just owned Walter – not “our” walter.. That “other” Walter offcourse 😉
Shadoh did not own me anytime 🙂
If you follow that thread Spooky did not divulge any actual useful information. My questions were more to flush him out than to gain ideas I needed. After all if you recall my .45 Vulture is doing 466fpe on 3,000psi and getting about 6 very powerful shots per fill.
In the interests of furthering airgun power I wanted Spooky to tell more.
He never did.
Shadoh’s post makes it sound like there was much information shared and discussed. That I do not recall. One thread about high velocity airguns
with pics of two guns Spooky made.
So Shadoh did me a favor finding that board for me as I had lost all contact with it.
Cheers,
Walter….
😉 You got me!!! He doesn’t go over that in the book!!! 😀
Do you think it may have to do with the HPA orifice in regards to the tank PSI, like a woman in high heels puts about 500psi with a 0.25″ diameter heel even if she only weighs 100lbs… 💡
IF ANYONE CARES AT THIS POINT!!! 😆
WE CAre!!!! 🙂
Now how are these fellas getting the 1100fps with 40 grain bullets in their .22 airguns? with 3,000psi air?????
Looks like there is a 50% loss of pressure due to expansion rate, differential pressure, shoulder angle and friction according to “Understanding Firearm Balistics” by Robert A. Rinker. I guessed correctly! 8)
IF ANYONE CARES AT THIS POINT!!! 😆
Thanks Buba, that is one nice rifle by Dave (Spooky) on teh Practical Machinist site as linked early in this thread.
Be interesting to build one eh Buba? 🙂
Walter….
Wow, what is it?

HehE THIS POST STILL GOING ON ………LoL
Got more pics l8r
The discovery piece was from 2001. I left Huntsville in 82. The first and many subsequent test didn’t use a vacum. Things progress, and improve. Research never ends. I saw a lot of neat toys at Red Stone, which is also there. you wouldn’t believe some of the things the Military was testing there. It’s still not talked about! If the Bad Guy’s in Iraq ever decided to fight like men, it would be over for them. On the other hand, we have weapons that would be a total waste to use on them. Good to save them for a really rainy day!

If you can push a .45 to 1800 fps with air, there is no reason that I can think of that a much lighter .22 slug cant go at least that fast.
With the response I’ve seen here today, I’m not about to post any of the numbers I’m getting with a simple hot-rodded Condor valve, out of a relative short 18″ .22 Bbl.
I have some air bullets ordered. We’ll see if theory is as strong as fact. After all. The earth is flat! 😯 Right???
All I can tell you is that having spent most of my life around NASA in Huntsville Ala., When someone who knows ever thing, and claims never to himself ask advice, but gives it out regularly tells me that something is impossible, I have to take it with a at least 40 grains of salt!
For what it’s worth, a .22 Long Rifle is considered a pip-squeak round here. I have a Weatherby .257 loaded with solid copper slugs by Barns bullets, (My power mix) that will break 4250 fps and I’ve taken Mature Buck Deer with it at over 800 yards. Witnessed by John the Moose Moran. All US Army dead weight lifting champion 1988-89.
It shot a .010 three shot group at the Fort Hood Sportsman range in 1990. Witnessed by and signed off by Maj. Louis Chow. 1 Cav. Div. US Army. This was from a regular sporting rifle. Not a bench rest gun. the Projectile contained NO LEAD> Many said that it was simply impossible. HeHe!!! Yeah, right!!!
The rounds were carefully worked up, and the bbl, hand lapped to a full mirror polish by me. Nothing else. 😀

No troubles Mike.
wonder why you now say no air? I’m only going by what you have wrote.
“If you can push a .45 to 1800 with air, there is no reason that I can think of that a much lighter .22 slug cant go at least that fast.”
Not taking it personal but have no trouble calling high velocity claims bullshit when that is the way I see it. If I am mistaken then my apologies.
BTW I know of the builder of the Buffalo gun 20mm that only goes 715fps
power from airguns comes from caliber, surface area and weight and air flow.
You will know that from your Condor project.
Looking forward to Al’s helium results.
Respectfully
Walter…
LOL, you see the pic of that crack in the shuttle windshield? You think that scared the crap out of them?
Whats even worse is you know as soon as they landed and pulled up to NASA some slimeball came running up from out of nowhere offering to fix that crack for 20 bucks right there on the spot.
Here, you go, NASA’s Ballistics Program, which clearly states that they shoot in a vacuum to recreate the effects of Space:
http://discovermagazine.com/2001/dec/featshoot
Interestingly, they get up to 100,000psi and the whole thing works like a springer rather than a PCP.
****** looking forward to data so keep at it!

****** who has a 45 slug of unknown weight going 1800fps with air?
****** that I would want to see!!!!

****** = my responses
so now the bar has been raised to 1800fps on air! ?
WOW if you are doing that then you are the top airgun god of the internet
my hat is off my old bald head to you!!!
oh, right no data, no supporting evidences…..
dog-gone I was hoping you were the real deal 🙂 teehee
Walter, may I at least ask why you are being such an arrogant prick? Especially since you can’t read? NO ONE SAID ON AIR!!!!!!
Not when we were talking high velocity!!!
Keep putting people down for things they never said , and answering question that were never ask. Add lying and getting caught while saying that you don’t ask advice. But that many ask you for it. I think it is about time that you shut your mouth and opened your arrogant ears for a while.
One word of the nay-sayers and I cant’s of the world have never accomplishes a thing. But that gives you no right to tell others that they cannot try, nor do yo have the God given right to belittle anyone.Being arrogant gives you no special privileges .I deal with some of the worlds sharpest and wealthest collectors as a matter of my buisness, and art. You have a long way to go to have enough arrogance to impress me!
What I’m trying to say in a nice way is, Voltar- AS we say here in Texas, Fuck you and the horse you rode in on. Your an arrogant fucking prick. And not all that bright. Figures!
I will no longer respond in any way to you or your post.

I would have thought the TAG Administration was past 3rd Grade errors such as using incorrect grammar – in this case “your” instead of “you”?
