pressure 22air vs 22LR
Hi, can anyone tell me how is it possible that a .22 airgun (modified condor for example) can shoot almost at same velocity (1100 fps and more) as 22LR when using same 40grain bullets. The pressure which airgun operates is 2000-2900 psi vs pressue in 22lr chamber is arund 22000 psi. My guess would be that when bullet travels down the barrel airgun gives that 2000psi all the way to the end vs 22lr gives this 22000 psi only at the beginning, am i on the right track?

Some airguns like the Discovery start at 2000psi and go down from there. At least one British gun uses a 4350psi initial fill pressure. Many posts have described guns that routinely operate in the mid-3000psi range. Granted all of these pressures are far less than the peak pressure of a rimfire. A clear lack of awareness is evident though.
So the Talon and the Condor aren’t 3000psi when full?!?! Am I unaware that the gauge says different or are you unaware of the operating pressures of the AirForce rifles??? 😉

Lama; My Marine son-in-law has been on travel. I need his expertiece to complete my answer. I’m still composing the difinitive answer regarding how a Lama shoot off hand with a super magnum.
Here’s the problem: A kid that weighs 130 pounds. He shoots a weapon from the shoulder delivering 4000 ftlbs of energy. He wants to hit his target without skidding his butt due to the recoil. This is a real challenge!

I’m not aware of any credible claim by anyone to have shot a 40gr .22 at 1100 FPS or more. I only did a quick search, did I miss it? I’m sorry for the waste of time and post space if I did. Eleven hundred FPS with a 40gr projectile translates to over 107 FPE, is anyone here getting that out of a modified Condor that is still a .22? Does anyone want to?

Despite the false premise and lack of comprehensive awareness, the theory proposed is probably correct! An airgun (pcp) can be tuned to vent enough air to maintain high pressure while the pellet travels the bore leading to velocities in excess of what one might expect given the reletively low peak pressure developed.
Nonetheless, a .22 airgun is not what you want if you want the power of a .22 rimfire. If you want 100 FPE, you should be looking at a hot .25 as a minimum or a .308/.32 class airgun. If you want a whole lot more power, look at larger calibers. I don’t think you’ll ever find a 1800 FPS .45 but you can find .45’s over 500 FPE, .58’s over 750FPE and even .87s that pack a wallop with 905gr “pellets.” None of these use high velocity (as in supersonic) to make power, they all use a lot of air, carefully managed to move a heavy chunk of lead at fast airgun speeds.

You realize that 3000 is outside the range (2000-2900) you specified for airgun operation, right? I simply pointed out your mistake and you appear to have provided another example of why you were wrong in the first place. If you intended to say that Airforce guns operate from 2000-2900 PSI, you should have said so instead of being more general. You would have still been wrong, but much closer to correct. Unless you also intended to say that Airforce guns can shoot .22 40gr projectiles at close to 1100 FPS with air pressure varying from 2000-2900 PSI, which has not been demonstrated to my knowledge.
Since you mentioned modified Condors, you might note that many modified guns operate at other than the standard manufacturer recommended pressure. Tofazfous’ .25 can take up to 3400 PSI and operate just fine and my .308 Condor likes 3400-3500 PSI for max power.
Do you have any information to share regarding the .22 Condor that shoots a 40gr pellet at close to 1100 FPS?
