R3M cycling making progress on smoother

I had posted pictures a few days ago about my gun feeling a little notchy as I slide the bolt forward due to having to finish aligning the magazine into the detents and what I thought I could do in making a new cam lever and changing the fit relationship between the tip of the cam and the cog on the mag. itself. Well I have cleaned and moly’ed and and shot it and it has smoothed considerably, it is fair to say I am a lot more used to it also and have an aquired nack of how fast to cycle the bolt to make the momentum carry the mag all the way to the detents now and that helps too, as it feels better when the probe does not have to finish the alignment. My testing while, non conclusive due to short range, did not show this bolt alignment cased any accuracy issues, it does feel notchy once again. Well I have finished the new parts and I think it might be a winner. But let me say that I am just cycling it with an empty mag so far this evening and testing needs to be done to prove it out. Un-fortunately I am out of time with a vacation pending until after the first of the year. So not likely do do any more work until then but here is pictures of before after and with the two levers stacked for a photo to show what I have worked on thus far. I tend to cock the 25 with a steady pull until it stops and this works every time for me dry cycling it here tonight and that is the way I like to operate this gun as I is mostly a bench gun to me. I will say that I found some comments by Ed, not sure where now, maybe my old thread, that he said he had to back off this close fit as the momentum could carry the mag to far when loaded with the weight of pellets. I will put some rounds through it and report back but so far so good. Also, just tonight, I saw in the video that was posted in, Wingman NZ’s thread about the R3 -vs- the R3m and even though it was not english that assembly fit more like my new set up when I stopped the video and looked. more testing needing done but I am this far for now.

another with the cam levers stacked for comparison in the bolt closed position: I wanted to just TIG some stainless onto my old lever and reshape it, and save all the cost time and effort of making a new one but I just could not bring myself to start welding on my new gun. I would now that I know, basically free and believe me this was not !!

As for a change the cam of .22 and .25 — in fact they are initially were made different, angles, length etc, exactly as Wingman NZ said, due to the 9/10 wholes of the magazine for .22 and .25. To my surprise when we tried to replace them — we didn’t find any difference, they all work the same way, so I decided to unificicate them in the future.

Once more — let the gun break in for at least thousand shots, then disassemble it, change the lubrication and enjoy.

After reading the “nag sessions” for the last week or so I was quite apprehensive about my .25R3M. It arrived yesteray.

Out of the box my .25 R3M had a somewhat rough, gritty bolt pull as well. A quick disassembly, cleaning, studying the action and the friction points, light polishing of few edges here and there with an ultra fine cratex wheel, and then relubing with 60% moly paste plus some medium viscosity Slide-Glide (I use it on my USPSA pistols, it’s very “clingy” and really smooths things out) and the bolt pull and action feel is now quite smooth from beginning to end. Other than the little “click” at the very end of the travel to index the mag it’s darn near as smooth as my single shot R3.

Regarding your new indexing cams, my original indexing cam looks similar to yours with an approximate .080″ gap from the end of the cam to the tooth on the mag with the bolt fully rearwards and the mag indexed properly. I had my doubts that it would index the mag fully in its current condition but I ran about 100 pellets through the rifle tonight with the original cam and the mag indexed properly every time. A somewhat quick, smooth pull of the bolt fully to the rear without any pauses seems to do the trick. Of course, it’s much easier achieving a quick, smooth pull after polishing and relubing. As it was delivered out of the box it was difficult to be smooth over the full travel of the bolt given the somewhat rough feel in spots. The polishing & fresh lube really improved things and I expect it to get even better with more use on it. I’m hoping to put 500-600 pellets through it this weekend.

A small request… do you have a CAD file for your new indexing cams? I thought about adding a little material to mine with the TIG but I’d rather leave the original as-is and make a couple new ones at work. Right now the rifle doesn’t appear to need one but I wouldn’t mind making a longer cam and testing it. Worst case I’ll pull my cam out and run it across the CMM but I figure if you had a CAD file you could save myself (and possibly others) the effort. 😀

Doug, after looking at your pictures, I am also wondering if you have a 22 part in your 25?

I like military stuff and I have always admired the Russian design as they seem to always have a no frills, heavy duty, last for ever simplicity to them. Just my cup of tea I supposed but I have it in everything I do if I can. I raced my whole life and built my cars boats bikes and planes with the same theme. So when I started studying air guns back in 2010 ish, there was only one choice for me. I even got miffed cause I got skipped for not being contactable when my order came in back in the 2.5 days and I just waited until recently to try again and voila.

Ya, I posted all that in my original thread that got derailed. I offered that possibility but hesitated to press the .22 idea even though I mentioned it cause I just didn’t know but if that is true we might be onto why some are better than others. My original looked like it was done on a bench grinder. It was polished like you said in all other areas.

Here is my new ones I made, in the raw. They cam off a wire wire EDM machine so they have a king of glass bead looking finish. It took me about an hour with a 320 then a 600 die stone to get one polished up and then more time to fit it in place to get it like the one in my pic of my gun.

I spent 2 Edguns on my diesel truck a couple of months ago to make it better, It’s just what I like to do. I like them cause life is complicated and they are just so damn simple, that is cool to me. I kinda liked Crickets until I saw the video of the side cover off and I don’t want nothing to do with all that complexity. I guess to each his own. This works for me.

not to sound like a jerk,…but really ? it seems to me unaccetable for a gun in the 2 grand range to be tinkered so much and still not even get close to a smooth operation.
