Q:

Rear tank gauge

Hi All,

First time here…

Reading some posts over the last couple of days, learning and having fun simultaneously, I decided to tell also my experiences.

I think that for a PCP tank, a gauge is a must.

Although I have used the gauge mounted in the neck of the bottle, it does not pleasing me ๐Ÿ™„ for two main reasons:

1ยบ The gauge in the bottle neck is very small, and difficult to read (and the useful zone of reading even more) and I believe that it is not accurate enough.

2ยบ I dont like the the asymmetric protuberance of the gauge in the bottle neck turning around while I screw the tank on. I see it fragile and dangerous if it receives a blow.

Then I decided to mount a real good gauge in the only position that is possible: the bottom of the bottle.

To do it, is indispensable to do drill a hole in the thank ( this is forbiden in some countries), but as a experiment I decided to take the risk, but with the due precautions of safety .Please note that I donยดt say to anybody to do that.

The first thing of all, to locate a suitable gauge. In my case I had to order it do, since I did not find what was searching in the shops of pneumatic and hydraulics.
In two weeks they made a gauge of 40 mm of outside diameter and 250 Bar on a large scale, with a rear thread of 1/8 G and 11mm length:

After, measure and verify the thickness of the bottle bottom wall, mesuring the outside and after the inside, I found that the wall thickness is 7 mm. More than enough for my purposes.

Afterwards, centre the tank on the lathe as best as possible and drill and thread the wall of the bottle….Yes, as natural as it sound , a hole in the bottom. ๐Ÿ˜€
For cutting the thread I help my self with a little drop of cutting fluid.

Nevertheless I do not want to allow that the whole pressure of the tank should push on the threads of the gauge and I decided to install a nut from the interior to hold safely the gauge. It has also an O ring to avoid leaks: ๐Ÿ˜‰

I had to do also the special key for this nut:

To install the nut inside the tank with the special key, was tricky and difficult due to the narrow space, and especially because you work blindly!! ๐Ÿ˜• ๐Ÿ˜• ๐Ÿ˜•

Once installed the gauge and its nut, I protected the whole assemble with a cover of aluminium specially designed to embrace the tank and to protect the gauge of possible shock and blows.

In addition it gives more resistance to the whole set. And it gives me the confidence of not having the gauge sticked into my shoulder.

Before installing it, I tried that the gauge fits very nicely inside its new housing:

Once quite mounted, the test-proof of pressure was satisfactory, I sprayed the tank rear with soapy water, charged the bottle very slowly, no bubbles at all, and for 20 days I left the tank loaded on 200 bar without losing only one bar of pressure. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

Already I have neither to count pellets nor do calculations simply I begin to shooting in 185 bar and finish on 100 bar. With good consistency of speed. I also have a good control of the presure while charging from the scuba. 8)

At the same time as I began this project, also I did an anatomical butt adjustable in length and height to do more ergonomic the set. Also it protect the glass gauge when not in use.

The screws that hold the support of the butt to the bottle are nylon pointed, to not damage or to create points of pressure on the surface of the tank

And this way there stays the whole set mounted and ready to shoot.:

Postscript
I do not recommend to anybody to do the same thing that I have done, since this is potentially dangerous specially if you dont have the proper tools….And knowledge

Each one calculates his own risk and do in consequence

Hope you like it

Iโ€™m no ME but I can understand Walterโ€™s concern. These tanks are cast from solid Aluminum Alloy. To drill and tap a hole provides a sharp right angle. History has show that stress fractures start at these points that lead to failure. Although minute, the air tank does โ€œflexโ€ during pressure changes creating stresses.

Others have installed a Monometer on the Air Tank Valve assembly where the rupture disk is located. IMO that seems to be a safer option provided you donโ€™t get into the habit of overfilling the tank.

Yes, sure, Iยดm only one working with this idea.

BUT IยดM NOT A FOOL

And please note that I donยดt have offended to any boby, I hope…..

Good to hear you are not a fool.
I have to ask why you would think this is a good idea?
no offense taken, I would as soon see you kept safe to continue shooting

In my opinion that’s uncalled for. Would you please tell us why you think he’s a fool?

So you would stand and watch rather than be offensive?

Still a stupid foolish act.

Drills into bottom of tank with 7mm, 0.280″ of material?
Would you drill into the side of a propane tank and screw in a guage?
Cannot believe how foolish some are!
Cheers,

Hmmm…..How did I know that was coming? ๐Ÿ™„

Xaloc, we would be happy to see more of your work.

The TAG has many characters and Walter is one of them. I think Walter has a list of those he thinks fools and most of us are on it anyways….LOL So you are in good company ๐Ÿ˜†

Good ol’ Walter… Always there with an encouraging word. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

Hello all

I’ve been shooting the weekend, more than 500 pellets, filled the bottle 5 times, with good control thanks to pressure manometer, and. … I am still alive. !!! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

No leak, no explosions, all normal …. ๐Ÿ˜†

For those who think it’s crazy my attempt to have a pressure gauge in the tank, let me say that I dont like jeopardize anything, and less my physics integrity.

I know mechanisms working at a much higher pressure and believe me that 200Bar not to scare if taken safety standards seriously.

Something, please realize that I do not sell this system, I did it for me, and tell you this as a possible improvement of the existing bottle and to share ideas, and who knows and can do it, could have a reference or new point of view.
But it is not something that I offered as a service, besides is not cheap, ๐Ÿ™„ ๐Ÿ™„ it is very laborious and I do not think that thrifty compensated. Just as a hobbie. ๐Ÿ˜€

Something more, yesterday I assemble the 4.5 mm barrel, I have several calibers and lengths, sometimes I do not need much power in shooting practices because hunting is prohibited in Spain with air weapons, then for plinking or paper punch up to 30 meters,in the backyard, with low power I have enough.

Surprisingly, the precision of this weapon with that caliber and power:

Nice piece of machine work there.

I learned my spanish from watching Tijuana TV. If my Spanish sucks blame the Mexican broadcasters. AKULA

Hey, I thought it was spot-on! Because I didn’t understand a single word of it!

Awesome work on the tank!

But AKULA’s spanish sucks!!!!!!!

๐Ÿ˜›

Xoloc; Tu es el hombre! (Your are the man.) I do wish to echo WOK’s senitments regarding safety issues though. You are a true inovator. I’ll count my shots until you get this perfected as I value my shoulder, face neck and hands more than I need to know how much pressure is in the tank.

Once perfected you have a customer! Yo quiero comprar su equipe in la futura. Bien! Bien!

Keep up the good work! AKULA
