Q:

Reduced Report .25 R3M Std

Hello guys and Happy New Year.

I know this topic has come up several times with multiple options. I thought I would share a simple DIY slip-on that I’ve been running for several months with good results.

I used stuff laying around my house. 1″ ID black poly pipe, 1/2″ OD poly pipe, 3/8″ wide self adhesive felt weather stripping, epoxy and a 1″ X 3/8″ spacer.

I simply epoxy’d the spacer in the front. This makes a decent end with adequate clearance for inaccuracy that may be inherent in a slip-on design. On a belt sander, I flattened the end of the tube so that it would slip on the end of the Edgun shroud with clearance between the slipon LDC and the air reservoir. I drilled holes equally spaced around the circumference of the LDC immediately in front of the end of the Edgun shroud. I wrapped and adhered a layer of the weather stripping to the 1/2 inch pipe. This is then a very good fit in the id of the LDC and serves as an end stop as well as baffling over the drilled holes. I finished by sanding the pipe to a cool looking suede looking finish and touched up the nylon spacer with a sharpie.

Took about 40 minutes and made from scrap pieces valued at about $3.

This will sound really goofy, but I wrapped 2″ clear packing tape around my Edgun shroud at the very end to build it up for a snug slip-On fit.

I think it looks OK and it works surprisingly well for what it is. As far as accuracy… Edgun is amazing and there is no impact at all with this LDC. If the wind cooperates it will hold 1″ at 100 yards provided I do my part.

An elderly woman walking down the road was killed by a pit bull/mastif mix last year, so now any dogs not on a leash are grabbed by animal control. Large loose dogs are shot. Dangerous here in the mountains. Too many banjo players on tressels breeding pit bulls!

DonnyFL…you swine, answer my PM!!!

Hoot,
I don’t think you need to mess with the holes in the baffles. I have a RM3 standard pushing the JSB at 940. The report was louder to the shooter that bystander. To really quiet the gun down get John’s 1/2 UNF shroud cover and Donny’s LDC. Just to get you hard numbers my Eddie was hitting 110 db at the muzzle. With donny’s shroud I hit 89-91 consistently. My personal experience is anything under 95 db at the muzzle is backyard friendly. I think Donny’s LDC works so well because it really restricts the exit air thus pushing it back through the factory shroud cover holes.

I have a .25 Standard Edgun due tomorrow, and I plan to re-drill the OEM shroud vent holes out to 3 mm.

Having noted the “between the baffle” holes in the Colibri shroud, I may investigate that option as well. If I do I will use very small vent holes.

The Standard shroud is smaller in volume than the “Longs”. The “Longs” quieted down nicely with 3mm enlarged vent holes. Since even the Standard is capable of some serious, 50+ FPE, power, the air blast is substantial.

I need a short, powerful, pcp capable of taking down medium sized nuisance animals, at very close range, 15 yearlings of which I saw in the lot next to mine last night. These stunted 50 to 110 lb animals have become so fertile they are now routinely bearing triplets each year. Local elderly residents are feeding them, but don’t realize the harm they are doing.

Night time head shots in my four gardens, at 25 yards or less, are a given. A .30/.357 is not feasible given the proximity of the neighbors within 100 yards. Game and Fish Commission says take out as many as we can because the culled specimens tested positive for disease due to overcrowding. Village Fathers have tried “Urban Hunts”, considered poison and contraceptive baits, but either lack of interest, or lack of funds are a factor, so nothing is being done. Meanwhile, they are eating every domestic plant in sight.

Thoughts? Experience? Suggestions? Fences, deer repellents, lights, barking motion detectors all failed!

Ok, I get it. You live outside of Arkansas….

Perhaps this will help: 5/64ths inch = 2.0mm 3/32nd’s inch = 2.4mm

I have used 3mm and found it to be effective, but I wouldn’t suggest going larger. More small holes are better
than fewer larger holes. Stick with 3mm and you won’t go far wrong.

Bazinga!!!

Hoot:

Crystal clear now, thank you

Dear Squirrel-pecker…

It was a test and you got it right.

Guys…the ‘Pecker is right! Use his numbers instead of mine.

Hoot:

ok got it thanks. I hope the lathe machinist will know what these numbers mean :smilen:

Here is what I recommend….5/32nd’s to 3/64th’s is as large as I, personally, would go. Others have used larger holes. However, the larger the holes the more possibility of escaping air to produce an audible sound.

More holes of this size would be preferable to fewer, but larger holes.

I enlarged the existing holes first and tested the results. Then I might add a second ring of holes about an inch forward of the OEM holes. At this point you are beginning to approach the point of diminishing returns! Too many holes will create a venting noise of it’s own, and you lose any stealth you gained.

Don’t over do it, and the gun WILL be quieter! Just remember no pcp is really silent…some are just quieter than others.

Done correctly, the hammer strike, and pellet impact, will be many times louder than any muzzle report from the pcp. Only the Colibri is quieter because the hammer strike is better muted due to design and placement. The Colibri is the quietest pcp I have ever owned.

Don’t you mean 5/64ths or 3/32nds? 🙄 :butkick:

Look up at the post above yours. The answer is there.

Hey Hsmnz,

If you make this mod could you post what size drill bit you used and your impressions on how well it worked? I was thinking of making the same modification. Your impressions would be much appreciated. Not that I do not trust Uncle Hoots assessment, but his brain is deteriorating at such an alarming rate getting a second opinion is a good idea.

Thanks…

Thats what I have asked uncle HOOT about, the size of the vents after drilling. lets hope he or someone else here helps us out
