Shoebox
Just got on the list #211 , so it will be a while. besides the desiccant filter is there anything I should get right away? Parts or O-rings?
I’m also in the market for a 88cf 4500psi scba tank. If I’m filling it myself do I need to be worried about hydro dates or age?

How do these tanks look? I have not seen any used 60min tanks, but maybe he’ll give me a deal on a few of these.
The ShoeBox will pump straight up to 8,000 psi (we know, we tried it). If its shutting off low you just need a bit more spring tension.

A lot of the Shoeboxes do not shut off at 4400 or 4500, if they do that is all and well. Mine shuts off at 4200 once at 4600, most shut off at 4200.
Jerry does not like to spend much on his Shoebox because it is all he can do to pay for rent and food and would rather spend it on cheap Daystates and an occasional african hunt, which is a much wiser endeaver. 😛
Tom Kaye told me he thought the shut off wold be a good improvement, he did not put it on the factory one because he wanted to keep the cost down. That Shoebox switch is not a precise shutoff, and most with the exception of Jerry do not get a consistant shut off level.
Wait until you get your Shoebox and see if it is of 75 buck importance. Your the owner and know or will know your needs.
I myself have considered it many times, but now that I have gotten the Booster pump and can top my tanks and guns off at any level I wish, it is not so important, I will eventually get it tho.

mine shuts off reliably at 4400-4500 psi with the collar adjusted properly. but if you feel adding 20% to cost of a shoebox is a plus, then the switch is a great add-on.
I just read some more and found you can adjust the stock switch. What advantage does the aftermarket one give you. I think for $70 I might cancel that order.

Just ordered the pressure switch and now am going to find the tools and try to find the filters JustForFun uses.
It’s not the cheapest options, but this porta nails air dryer kit is a quick and easy way to add the moisture filter.
Get a lot of hose. At least 100ft. Then put all of that before the air dryer. Also put the shoebox higher and let gravity help with water removal. I guess you have a shop compressor. The cutoff switch would be a nice mod. I adjusted the stock one on mine and get a 4400 fill after tank cool down so I am satisfied.

It will come with replacement seals for your first rebuild, the online store has replacement seals and about anything you will need. You will need two speciality tools for the rebuild, they are available cheap at Harbor Freight. You will need snap ring removal pliars, I got the regular size and the three mini size ones, I have never used the regular one yet, the one pair of minis work fine. You will need dental picks to remove the Orings, again HF has them, then you MUST dull the points so you do not scratch the cylinders removing the orings.
I would rate the first rebuild difficulty as compareable to the first time you completely disassembled a AR15 bolt.
If 4500 PSI is really important to you, they usually only go to 4200PSI or so, then get the mod that “JustforFun” shows on his thread.
The cheapest tanks I have found are on Ebay, they come out of Los Angles from the fire departments there, and usually are either just expired or have a year or two on them, I see them on Ebay, you can get a 44 CUFT or two of them for around 160 bucks to your door, the 88 cuft would be a little more than the 44 cft.
In europe these same tanks are good for 30 years, so unless they have penetrating damage with fiber damage, don’t worry about them, they will be marred and scratched from 15 years of fire departmeant work, but mine have been sound.
The guy I have gotten them from in the past is Vietnamese, so if your dealing with a fellow with a vietnamese name you have the right guy.
Others have gotten cheaper ones, but still they are usually off of Ebay, and you do have time to shop.
Do the mod for the cover screws that is on Lurkers thread, it runs cooler when the cover is on, if you choose t run it with the cover off get a mini 10 dollar fan.
Joe Brancato has the best fill hose assemblies.
