Q:

Shoebox will be here inside of two weeks

Note on Tom Kaye’s Shoebox forum, he is assembling the first 100 for shipment, I am number 54. On my shop bench, everything sets, oillesspancake compressor, moisture trap and hose and two scba tanks.

Bad news is, JDS just sent me a email that his 4500 regulator will not fit my Pygme bottle.

It is just a slight difference in money to make my own good news and get a regultor from Joe Branco like the one he sold to 80 grit, put it on the pygmee and attach a lifeline to my etac and have any out put I choose for that new 25 caliber barrel I am getting tomorrow, UPS site says it is in Portland loaded on a truck south to me for tomorrows delivery.

And maybe on the Disco pistol with the 10 shot mag I am building, thanks to my fellow enabler and addict Riverside.

If I keep up on this rate, I will have to pick things up at the UPS store, I don’t think they deliver to homeless people. I wonder if I can get all this kit under my cardboard box? ❓

Sam,

On his web site, someone asked him that, he will not do it because of liability problems. You can get the 4500 PSI one and fill a 3000 PSI tank by keeping a close eye on it, or you can get a inline limiter device that shuts the shoebox off at 3000PSI. Then you can remove the limiter when you want to use it as a 4500 PSI. It costs around 150 to 190 dollars.

I wonder if Tom will be able to make one that can switch between 3K and 4500Psi.?

The Shoebox is ideal for a person who has a SCBA tank and needs it filled for a day of paintball or hunting.

For the price I wish I had one over the last 15 years in paintball. It was always a challenge to find a place to fill our SCBA tanks for the weekend.

Mr. Shelden and Mr. Kaye have streling reputations as atested to by the people they have worked with. They seem to be on the same page and that’s good enough for me. I hope that they do talk and compare notes. That would be good for all of us. 😉

Personally, I am quite impressed with the shoebox compressor as it fills a niche that has been wanting for a long time. The question of moisture and how it is removed with the shoebox system has been one of my questions since the first time I saw it. That was all I was asking about. It looks like an ingenous little gizmo.

he individuals who purchase my compressors need lots of air. Some times filling 5 to 20 large tanks a week or air for 3-6 shooters. they may go on a hog hunt for 2-3 days and shoot big bore airguns that use lots of air.

That would be a retail (filling station) type of application or a hunting camp type of usage.

That is FAR, FAR beyond a ‘serious’ shooter’s usage…

Do “serious” shooters do competitions? That could be handled by a single tank (i’ve seen it done many times) that could slow fill during the 20 hours that they are not shooting.

Adam jump in here, Syn. I believe they are talking about different types of “serious” shooters. I’m guessing paintballers use a lot more air than lead slingers. From what I’ve seen, (almost full auto spray and pray shooting) I would think a person with Jims unit could make some coin setting up outside a paintball area.

“serious”… 🙄

Jim,

I absolutely did not take any of your comments the wrong way. In fact considering I am the new guy around here, I have been treated very civilly which I appreciate. I see it the same way you do, our products and markets are completely different. With each company the performance specs match the price paid.

I am all for getting along with competitors. Some people here know from my time in paintball, that I actually worked with direct competitors to make things safer and standardized etc.

If you ever want to chat about the market just email me and I will call you back.

Thanks,

Tom Kaye

Tom,
When I read your specs —
* 3 minutes to fill a one cubic inch air tank to 4500 psi or 300 bar
* 68 cubic inch paintball tank = 3.5 hours
* 80 cubic foot scuba tank to 3000 psi or 200 bar = 24 hours
* Marauder air rifle = 800cc Vulture air rifle from 2,000psi to 3,000psi in 45 minutes
the fill process is a long time for individuals who have high volume requirements. The automation shown in your design to operate a 2stage small volume pump is very ingenious. My post was not to rundown the unit because it is a low cost system that works. We have entirely different markets and several individuals have ask me questions about your unit. Their volume requirements can not be met with your compressor.
Most individuals cannot afford my compressors and these individuals that purchase my compressors do a lot of shooting with big guns (50 Caliber) or do paintball tournaments where they compete with several teams for 1 or 2 days. Scuba divers that purchase my compressors may fill 5 -10 tanks a week and many mix NITROX.
Your compressor is unique and fills a huge hole that has existed for a long time. My comments were to show the volume and time differences between a commercial compressor and your unit.
I really didn’t intend to start a rubarb. I’ll not make any more comments

Not that it matters to anyone but me…..

But I’m on the Shoebox list now! Woo-hoo! No more driving into town for CF fills! 😎

My Compressor is a gas operated motor and it will fill the Air Hog tank from 0 to 4500 in about 30 minutes, I refill it when it gets below 2500 and it don’t take long at all. I got it from Scuba dot com and they shipped it freight. Thats what Ive used for the past 2 years without a hitch. It’s over 3000 dollars but it easily fills my tanks.
We don’t have a local scuba shop here at all. 😀

I don’t think Jim Sheldon knows who Tom Kaye is and his relationship to paintball.

Believe me when I say if Tom designed and makes it you are in good hands.

Where everyone seems to go wrong in discussions of tank size is that they don’t realize that paintball tanks are identified by the physical size of the tank. A 72 cubic inch paintball tank is like a glass that will hold 72 ci of water. A 44 cubic foot Airhog is identified by the cubic feet of air AT ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE.

Airhog = giant balloon that you can cram back into the tank at 4500 psi.
72ci fiberglass PB tank= punch bowl with red liquid taking up a volume.

Hope that explains things. This has been a common problem in other threads.

quote Jim Shelden:

I have been reading the comments on the shoebox compressor and looked at the videos, and performance. What interests me most is that an average paint ball player will go through a 72 cu in tank in a game in about 15 minutes Then goes home and hooks up to the Shoebox and waits for 3.5 hours to get a fill so he can go shoot again. And if he wants to fill a 3000PSi scuba tank to get multiple fills it takes 24 hours to fill a tank. I don’t know how much time it would take to fill an 86 Cu Ft airhog tank to 4500PSI — but a long time.

I agree with Walter, that if you can tolerate a hand pump quality of air — You don’t need to worry about moisture, Because you can’t pump fast enough or long enough –and at the fill rate of the shoebox compressor, you can’t get much moisture in the tank.

I sell compressors to SCUBA shops, Air gunners and Paint ball fields/ players. These compressors can fill an 86 CuFt Airhog tank to 4500PSi in 16 minutes and then you can go shoot for 3-4 hours. If you have a couple of tanks you can shoot all day. There is no comparison between the shoebox compressor and a 4 stage 4-6CFM compressor –in price or time to fill a tank.

If you are a serious shooter -buy a compressor. If you are not, buy a shoebox because time is not important.
Jim Shelden

your numbers are COMPLETELY wrong. i filled my 44 cf scba tank from 0-4500 psi in slightly under 9 hours. by extension an 88 cf tank would take 18 hours. but bear in mind that is from 0 to 4500. there is absolutely NO WAY A 72 CUBIC INCH TANK WOULD TAKE 3.5 HOURS TO FILL, EVEN IF IT WAS EMPTY, WHICH THEY NEVER ARE AFTER THE INITIAL FILL! and there is no way an 80cf 3000psi scuba tank would take 24 hours to fill- not when you can take an 88cf 4500 tank from 0 to 4500 in 18 hours- and again that assumes the tank is empty when you start, which they never. if i fill my TalonSS tank DIRECTLY from the shoebox when it needs a refill( about 2200psi going to 3000psi), it takes LESS THAN 10 MINUTES!. i realize you are trying to sell $2500-4000 compressors but at least get your facts straight.

OK, I guess that I get so much moisture from the 5.4CFM fill rate of my compressor. I can live with that.

I think that the shoebox is a great idea. I was just wondering about the moisture content of the air because I see what comes out of mine. I think that there are mostly serious shooters here on the TAG and the shoebox would more than fullfill their needs. I look forward to Tom producine enough of these units and selling them overseas to those who would be interested.

Mr. Shelden sells alot of high volume compressors to people who use alot of air. He sells compressors to people who use air for purposes other than the shooting sports. They may not be any more serious, they just use more air.

I didn’t mean to offend you by my comments about serious shooters. The individuals who purchase my compressors need lots of air. Some times filling 5 to 20 large tanks a week or air for 3-6 shooters. they may go on a hog hunt for 2-3 days and shoot big bore airguns that use lots of air.
The shoebox compressor just take the labor out of using a hand pump which is very labor intensive.
