He also suffered from stage fright of all things, and was terrible on stage.

And we are hi jacking this mans deer killing thread.

Roachcreek

he had at the end in Deadwood
if I remember right he had a Hammond Bulldog single shot on him when he was shot at the Number 10.
Story was he had hocked at least one if not both the ivory Navies in Deadwood as due to his degenerating eyesight they were about useless to him and the booze was more important
this was as well the reason why Cody fired his ass, couldn’t perform between his bad eyes and his tits up liver
his edge was long gone by about 74′

That and the fact that even Libby Custer described Bill as the finest example of manhood she had ever beheld, and the fact that on the prairie, you can see for miles so when that big fucker lay down to die, you knew it.

He never did give up on those Navies tho.

Roachcreek

yeah agreed
another old classic was Hickocks killing a pair of Bison simultainiously with a .36 Colt Navy in each hand while riding his horse between them while he was guiding the Russian Grand Dukes Buffalo hunt in Kansas
very well documented incident, even by the Russians who were eye wittnesses to the act
does that mean the .36 cap and ball revolver is proper Buffalo medicine?
nope but history does record it as having been effective as such in the right pair of hands

No offence taken freind, and yeah the 3840 was and is our 40 S&W. Deer round? Man stopper of our time? From experience
a damn poor bear in the night round.

Roachcreek

shoulda broken up that last post RC, didnt mean it all directed at you, just the laughs at your kings deer comment…

on the .25-20 while it is no long range round by any means it was never the less promoted by Winchester itself as a Deer round suitable for the New England forests due its relative lack of range
wasnt a case of lack of a better tool
in some environments using a .30-30WCF, muchless a .45 Government is akin to using a sledge hammer to do cabinetry work in your house
again what do you suppose folks bought 73′ and 92′ Winchesters for?

always thought it damn funny that folks reasoned the .38-40 & .44-40 were great man killers…read Dangerous Game yet were too small to be used against grass eating four legged forest rats of the same mass that offerred the hunter little to no threat in return
lets not even bring up the .44 Henry flat rimfire widely used as a man killer in the war between the states
even the .56-50 rimfire Spencer roundis EXTREMELY anemic
and those were relative powerhouses compared to the Maynard, Gallager, Star and other popular carbines used in the field of combat

put like that it really doesn’t make a great deal of sence does it 😉

Huntings is killing, killing is not always what the city dwellers like to refer to as humane, but we as humans are all fucked up over this humane shit.

For example, we will let grandma or grandpa rot in a old folks home, suffering pain that drives them insane, but take the family dog to the vet when it gets in the same shape. But then I never take my animals to the vet, I casterate them myself and when they get old I shoot them myself.

I read all about these guys saying you should not shoot a squirrel, unless you can brain the thing. I personally would rather shoot the thing and let it run down a hole so I do not have to fuck with it.

Death is death, it is part of living.

Your saddling up the wrong horse Riverside, my friend, if you think I have any qualms about any of this humane stuff. Like you I grew up shooting it when we needed it.

I did not realize how bad it had gotten until I started watching hunting shows on tv where they had to get that perfect boradside shot, when I elk hunt, I take the shot I can get, if I have to trail it so be it.

I do however think certain tools are better for certain jobs. It just depends on the job on hand and what you wish to acomplish. For me for years, it was deer with a silenced 22 Ruger. Which may make what I say about the 2520 sound puzzleing.

I do disagree with you about the 2520 being a deer cartridge, it has been used by thousands of hunters when they had nothing else, key phrase being nothing else.

But I have to side with Elmer on that one, it would have been better still born.

I use the magnum cartridges on elk, where I hunted the elk were as spooky as any you will find on this continent, I could and did shoot them at what I thought was long range, and it is all about energy when your doing that, combined with the fact that if you do not anchor that animal and it runs by another hunter and he finishes it off, it is his elk.

I competed at 1000 yard long range shooting for years, I had a 1100 yard range on my property, I could , and did make those shots, but you need energy to buck wind and to take the game once you hit it.

You may disagree with me, but I made 50 elk gut piles and have strong opinions based on facts gained in the field.

Cartirdges designed for the 92 Winchester did not cut it. I shot them in competition also and yes I did try them on game, they came up wanting in my book. And it was thru actual experience, not what someone said in a smoky bar over a beer about what he heard as a kid about what uncle joe did during the depression when…………..

Well stated roachcreek
Something that has always seemed strange to me is that if one of my cows gets out in the road and is hit by a car I can be held liable . If one of the deer on my ranch gets hit in the road the state of Texas takes no responsibility , even though they claim ownership of all deer in the state . I suppose things like this make me hold many of the laws regarding the KINGS GAME in some suspicion .

RC…Bwahahahaha!!!…Kings Deer!
While a bit of a Blowhard, Kieth was a serious student of small arms and his research on the greater lethality of the round ball versus conical solids is fact
and lets try and leave “humane” out of the picture as well
I couldnt count the deer I have seen in my life with arrows sticking out of them, lower jaw partially blown off, leg shattered, ect
we are a society that will wince over “poor” animals yet turn blind eyes to the use of Cluster Bombs & Incendiaries on civilian populations
Oh the Gawd afull HUMANITY of it all
spare me…
When it comes to the beasties of the field, The whole humane killing argument shit is rather recent. Try early 20th Century and became popular along with game licenses and other bullshit during the great depression as a means to prevent poor folks from putting the Kings Deer in the stew pot as well as forcing folks to purchase new guns to replace the recently outlawed common smaller ones when it came to venison.
much of this was being promoted by the American firearms companies as well as a small cadre of upscale “sport” hunters who didnt give a shit whether people were starving, this was all about privilage for them.
ps…same group of assholes who promoted the Gun Control Act of 68′ and other nonsence
We tend to forget origins of this crap
Today these are the same assholes who take a deer, strap it on the roof rack of the SUV until it starts to rot then toss it at some urban landfill
I ask you whats more criminal?
the man who uses the wrong gun to take the deer but eats it or the scumfuck who blows it half to shit with his brand new belted uber magnum then tosses the carcass in the trash?
the first example is of course a violation of the idiot laws of man however the second act is so morally reprehensible for me words can not describe it
for me it falls in the same class as the dirtbag sadist who gets his kicks by torturing puppies or kittens to death

Yes it is, it would be mind boggling to find out how many animals are taken illegally each day with air rifles.

The squirrel in the bird feeder or the starling at the garden, if shot inside the city limits is a act of poaching, it just does not involve a big game animal.

Remember the fire storm about ten days ago with the bobcat killed by the guy on the yellow, to save his fucking cat, same thing he poached a bobcat.

Taking a deer with a gun not qualified by the regulations falls under the same laws.

But by the same token, how many are killed by cars and left to rot, and for everyone killled by someone to feed his family, how many families do not collide with them and as such are not put in danger.

Simply put, we have too many of them and as hunting declines in popularity, the herds increase, until they are both a road hazard and a health and safety hazard, in that they attract large man killing predators here in the west into our yards.

Here in the pacific NW if you have deer in your yard, you have a good chance of having a cougar there also.

All acts have consequences, everything we do, good or bad has a ripple effect. I poached for years, I have no guilt about it, there is no shortage of animals from my actions.

If someone wants to take a deer using an incorrect means, I will certainly not loose sleep over it.

If you do not wish to do such things, don’t.

But then realize that your reading the writings of an unrepentant sinner.

Roachcreek

I’m not sure it’s a crime if your not caught .

There you go, brittish subject worring about the kings game. 😯

Roachcreek

legal hunting is a requirement for you fellas as well, no?

sniping deer in urbanized locales would pretty much be poaching north or south of the 49th.

you ought study history some.

quote theodor:

The woods Im going to hunt are very small people are everywhere outside the woods. The only thing I have thats small and is quiet is my airgun so the mission is on. Ill def post some pics. Ive killed plenty deer with subsonic 22 rounds out of my rifles. All in the head they all died. Always to the side of the head or in the back of the head. A couple didnt die immediately they dropped but stood up I gues brain dead than I them again and it was over. How do I get in contact with jerry N do i haft to do any mods to my gun to shoot the slugs? With power wheel on 11 with 2900 Im shooting 980s for first 6 shots around about. Thanks Again. Have a tin of 43 grain samyang. Whats your opinion on using the samyangs I have? Just ordered new tank setup for my luxfer 4350 from joe so im def not gonna have prob running out of air. Def hate when that happens. Im gonna hopefully try out this week if weather slows down been raining non stop. Think around 11 inches here. Most people def wouldnt relize that a hundred pound doe can be deboned and fit in a normal sized jansport bookbag…

would be called poaching, no?

I have killed, skinned and made my own mounts for hundreds of deer. We lived on a farm and had permits to killl all we wanted to. They were varmints to us eating food meant for the cows. I shot them with whatever I had in my hand. I cannot imagine a deer skull stopping a condor pushing a Extra Heavy Kodiac at 1025 feet per second at fairly close range (not sure what it would still be doing fps at say 25 yards?) My condor will penetrate a 55 gallon steel drum through one side and dent the other side pretty good! a deer skull is not as tough as steel drums. I can get about 5 inches of penetration in modeling clay. I certainly think there are much better choices than an air gun do not get me wrong. I do think a condor with a slug will hammer them dead at close range. 😆
thin skin and the skull is all that covers the brain no meat or real amounts of fat for protection.
