Silent Pellet Trap
I want to build a REAL silent trap for garden shooting.
I have tried the putty, cotton and fibre thing. The idea will be more of an large attenuator with sound absorbing material, like Rockwool.
Is there perhaps someone that has done this successfully or have some ideas?

I would if I could get an order for 3-5 units. I want to see if I can make it smaller and lighter. I’m going to test 55fpe at 5feet and see what it does. All you hear is the paper getting punched at this point. But its pretty heavy with the mulch in it.
That’s very nice looking! Well done sir! I wish I had a sheet metal press and the skills to do that….plan on selling them?

I finally got my truly silent almost trouble free silent pellet trap done

Lars-atx,
I think it weighs about 30-35 lbs. I found the center of gravity and put a handle on the top to carry it around with. It was interesting to see it hopping all around the shooting bench when I was testing it with the 9mm Glock.
100 yards 48 FPE at muzzle. Blows clean through it I see the snow kick up on the back side
Has anyone tried to see how long a Archery Block Target lasts for pellet gun shooting. Maybe stand a sufficient backstop behind just in case. ??? I got one I rarely use, I’m gonna try it. They are tightly packed and designed to heal. ???
Tom, how much does yours weigh?
A bunch of layers of carpet with couch foam in front of it has been the most silent I have been able to get so far.
here is a couple of my traps
Got mine finished today and will try it tonight and get back to you guys with pictures and results
It will look mostly like this but deeper to accommodate the rubber mulch.

Thanks for the advice.
There are two parts to proper pellet trap.
The stopping material or better the energy absorption or the pellet and then the sound attenuation of the energy being distributed.
I have been using BICC Compound successfully for about 10 000 pellets and it is still good, just much heavier now.( similar to duct seal)
So I want to build a sound attenuator this weekend to see if it works.
I will post some pics later.
Here’s a post I put up on the yellow just a few days ago –

The last post is a list of all my dimensions for cutting, Here’s a quick link to that – http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/message/1389745672/Here+are+the+dimensions+of+all+the+cuts.
I didn’t pay much attention to how much sound it produced when the pellets hit it so, unfortunately, I can’t speak to how quiet it is. I imagine it makes a good “smack” when it hits the 1/4″ MDF. If this design works for you, maybe you could replace the MDF with something a little more silent.
Hope this helps!
Just picked up a bag of rubber mulch and will hopefully test my first prototype silent Airgun trap by weekend. I’ll keep you posted.
It also depends on the design. The front of the trap will hold paper and reflect sound inside the box. The back of the box should have duct seal or rubber mulch to absorbe the energy. You may want sheet steel on the back wall to prevent over penetration.
Depending on the above design you may want a void between the backstop and the target carrier/face. That void needs sound absorbing material on the flat walls. Then the impact sound is trapped between the backstop the the target carrier/face.
Note: rubber mulch will need another divider to hold it in place and stop it slumping.

Nice job eelect, quite similar to my own effort… tightly rolled jeans inside a can of paint.
