Test #2/ 4400 psi fill with new 4500 psi Bottle

Wind finally quite blowing for a while this morning, and I had some air, sooooo= A test was in order. 😀

This is with teh New 4500 PSI Bottle that DMan got in for us. And a good looking Bottle it too!

I had been shooting it at 3800 psi with good results, but wanted to try somthing different with it. I have kept the .257’s Power Wheel on 7 to 8 for a long time. But just for shit’s and giggles I decided to raise the pressure and see what would happen.

I had alread tried this at 8 on te PW, and anything over 3850 and the shot would drop like a rock. 😯 This was starting out at 1020 fps. @ 3850 psi with the NOE 60 grain 20/1 lead tin/ bullet. Now keep in mind that this was quite an improvement over teh Factory AF Bottle filled to 3000 psi. (although I cheated and filled to 3400 several times) which gave me a top velocity of 1020 at the 3400 fill. 3200 would give me 960 and the factory recomemded 3000 psi would clock in at 930. So what would the 4500 psi bottle and pw adjustment do with my short 21″ bbl?

:8: She really started shooting at 4000 psi with the pw pushed up to 10 and then started to drop fps again if pushed any higher. Time to get radical!!!

I tired the full on adjustment maxed out on the PW at 4500 psi adn Nope, dropped like a rock. 😥

I gave her one last try and moved the fill down to 4400 psi. And WOO-H00!!! 😀 Happy Days!!!

I finally got a killer Bell Curve at this setting. Here are the numbers, But First, with out accuracy, numbers are useless! The 257 Talon/Dor started shooting un-blievably consistenty, as in shooing clover leafs at 80 yards. Time and Again. From just under 1/4″ to just under 3/8″ at the 80 yards. with many of the groups only one slightly larger hole and usually one bullet making one touching hole. (there always has to be one, right!) 👿
So now that it can shoot a Squirells eye out at 80 yards, what were the numbers?

Starting with a 4400 psi fill they were:

1037 @ 44 PSI
1051
1061
1060
1045
1041
1033 Ending at 3800 PSI

Man I was and still am Stoked!!! :8: Only 600 PSI, and shooting just under super sonic. Perfect for my LDC’ed Critter Gitter!!!
Thats 75 psi, or 5.17 Bar per shot at a starting 150 FPE and ending at 142.2 FPE

Hell Yeah!!!

That’s kickass. I cant wait to be testing mine out. What psi did you start at and drop to?

Added a new sizer to the battery. she is .2576 rather than the .2587 I have been using. Groups tightened up even more, and she picked up apx. 30 FPS from the reduction in friction.

The really nice thing is that she just a little more than doubled the shot count. I can go a good 15 shots with great accuracy. And at 100 yards, she is still dead on right up to 10 shots with no noticeable drop. A Real Win-Win!!! :8:

This 4500 psi bottle is really helping!

Only once in the shower, when she came in thru the bathroom window….
Well anyways I didnt get much shooting as it was just before dark when I got out there but shot a couple of fills on the airforce tank (forgot my DIN valve with whip) had tank with K valve no whip. I need bigger air like your tank! Just not enuff air to get ‘er sighted in and grouped on paper. At least not real quickly right before dark. But it may be getting better because it seems to have less binding than previous as I preloaded the power wheel higher than earlier. I need to place an order with RJ and make an afternoon tethered to the bottle and on the bench setting her up seriously.

Hope to hell she sings BETTER than Yoko! 😯

RC, Who would’a thunk it! 🙄

Yes indeed it is most unfortunate discovery of how the new trigger is having issue with the heavy spring hammer combination. I must give Doug great credit for his tenacity! At this moment it would appear the most economical solution is to simply use the older styled frame trigger combination. The newer style is going to require much further research as time affords. I know that I really liked this trigger/safety up until this point. I dont have experience using the previous style but being a Garand / BM59 / Mini 14 High Power shooter the safety worked well for me.
I am going to continue to see if I might be able to massage this into shape and see if I cant come up with a solution. I am at least much further along than before, this will just be a hiccup . I still have further to invest in greater tank capacity and casting gear. Until then it is RJ’s and tethered to the scuba, while we iron it out or can at least put a bandaid on it! I am going to punch some paper later today but not expecting it to be ultra consistient at the moment. Well back to Chris Carter and Breakfast with Beatles! Julie and I are like John and Yoko each Sunday choosing to have breakfast in bed! :7: :8:

Well I just found out that the new triggers are not compatible with Doug’s valves and spring/hammer combinations.

This means my hopes of using a Condor SS are not going to work.

Once again Airforce has stolen an idea off this forum and managed to screw it up.

Stellar Airforce!

Looks like I will go for a Talon SS, use it as a SS and still be able to switch it out to a TJ/Dyotat rifle.

Seems the barrel is well broken in now. Even with the sizing die over sized, I can now put a couple hundred bullets down range before a cleaning in needed. A far cry form new where it needed a cleaning ever 25-30 shots for its fantastic accuracy.

It is shooting bullets .0015 over bore right now. I will be changing this to .0005 next month. This should tighten the groups up even more, increase velocity, and decrease leading even more. A win all around!

Aah! Thank God you finally decided to go back to at least somewhat of the Country rather thatn a place it the City! You and I both know that you would hate it RC.

I drilled and taped the frame for extra screws for the end cap, (LDC). Lets me keep it aligned much easier, and resist bumps when out and about with it.

Eyes doing very well. Shop ready to go. If—I ever quite shooting and casting so much . LOL!!!

Looking forward to your getting back!

Mike

Sorry to be so late getting back to you. Internet here is spotty at best, so a lot of posts I want to comment on either do not go thru or we just do not have internet.

Those look like really good numbers Mike.

I am torn between going for a 36 inch 1-10 or a 20 inch 1-14 TJ. I want to put it in a Condor SS and thread the barrel to take a flash hider that will divert inside the frame and try and take pressure off that end cap and quiet the bark down somewhat, seems that if the Condor SS is having trouble with the end cap stretching the retaining end cap set screw hole with a 3000 PSI tank that the 45000 PSI tank will simply launch that little cap.

Not looking for backyard friendly, where I am moving when I get back to the states the population density is one person per square mile, so the backyard friendly more or less means your Australian Shepard does not chase the neighbors cows. :winkn:

[quote=”roachcreek”]Thanks Mike, and if you send me that Shoebox, I will rebuild it for free and test it a couple of years for you. :winkn:

Oh Thanks RC! You Tha Man!

Here are some chrony rersults;

71 gr hp lyman that you cast, (RoachCreek) went 979 fps for 157.50 fpe

80 grain NOE that I cast for 935 fps @ 155.33 energy

and the 60 gr. NOE @ 1080 for 155.44 fpe

So far, so good! 😀

Going to order a smaller sizing die the first of the month.

I went the other direction. I once shot the cassull outta the .457 barreled super 14 contender that I had the barrel reamed for .410 shotgun on the sly in cali. Shooting with a bunch of nuts, I bragged about how it could shoot someone elses 45 long and to bring it on.. 45 long shot ok . Maybe the sticky bulged case from a blackpowdered cartridge shoulda warned me, because next up was a cassull round and a hot one too. That contender frame didnt like it too much. I couldnt get it open. Finally did but broke the extractor. The frame never locked up too good after that. I always kept one round of .457 with me just in case I got caught shooting 410. I JUST CANT IMAGINE NOW THAT THE CONTENDER COULD HOLD UP TO THAT BIG GAME BELTED CARTIDGE. Glad I never tried. Maybe reaming the length of the barrel or the 45 bp cartridge already screwed it up. I was young and dumb.

Thanks Mike, and if you send me that Shoebox, I will rebuild it for free and test it a couple of years for you. :winkn:

I have drawn a lot of human blood with the Casulls in 454, a fixed sighted model and a adjustable sighted model. I used to shoot them on pepper poppers three or four times a week practicing for elk season. About once a month I would get the bastards too close to my face concentrating on a sight picture and drive the front sight into my head right at the scalp line.

I would walk up to the house, with my blood running down my face, scare the hell out of my family and get more ammo and shoot the entire practice session again using the “if the horse bucks you off, you get back on,” concept.

To really warm up the Casulls, I would shoot my NEI 430 grain 457’s sized way too far down to .454, a lot of recoil in that load.

I decided after shooting those 430’s that if I needed to warm the Casull up much more, I would lay it on the pavement on a hot day.

Pak, Yes, please tell us more! I have been interested in a .223-4 for years. And is exactly WHY I went into the .257 in the first place. Just seemed a natural progression. 😀

RC, I will check out the 257. Lymans. My compressor is down for the moment. Had no time to rebuild it.

Doug, My NAA’s cylinder pin comes all the way out. Don’t know if they canged it or not.

The NAA 30 gr, swaged, .224 ammo is pretty darned nice too. About pellet price IIRC, and very consistent. I have been shooting heavier cast to good effect, and have not turned the Marauder down to shoot 60-65 FPE in a while.
cheers,

Hey Pak,
I had read a little bit about someone shooting the NAA ammo in a Savage barrel I think??? Was that you?
Please do tell us more! You are shooting this in a Marauder? Not very stock I assume? Barrel and valve work?
I first showed up on here pondering about
.17 heavy long swaged bullets, but realize that it technically would be too much of a challenge. Need too much twist rate to get a heavy enough .17 to do much good and trying to get a valve rhat can dump the air fast enough, with enough pressure and not dump the tank just doesnt seem so viable. But I guess much the same said for.224 at one time not long ago. Funny thing is that earlier today I saw some lead wire that was being sold that would pobably be perfect for extruding .17 cal pills for airgun fodder.
These NAA cast .224 bullets are being sold for percussion versions of the belt buckle revolver?
I met Dick Cassull when he first started going around to promote his Freedom Arms Co. He touted the worlds biggest production handgun and worlds smallest production handgun. The smallest being the percussion gun. At that time he loaded it with rws roundball and 1gr of hornady red dot shotgun powder but I cant remember what he capped it with….
I liked my Freedom Arms mini .22 much better than the NAA versions. It seemed more compact and more precise in the mechnism but prolly not as stout. I know one thing about theFreedom gun was that if ya ever lost the cylinder pin you were screwed! The NAA ya dont completely remove the pin to load the cylinder?
