To lube or NOT to lube
Here are my results of dry and lubed pellets….
JSB Match Diablo Exact Jumbo Heavy 18+gr .22 cal.
I lubed them with Break-Free then rolled them
back and forth in a paper towel folded in half to
take off the excess….
I have seen discussions about it but I never did
a comparison….My rifle likes lube….Yours’ might
not…..
This is a 65yd target…..All of these shots were
from one fill…I did not refill before shooting the
lubed pellets….

I don’t recall hearing anyone mention Napier Pellet Lube. I’m currently testing it on some pellets.
I have been using Crown Rust protection as my pellet lube. It seems to works fine.
I use Trinity #40 (or 40 weight) pure silicone RC car shock absorber oil. It’s non-flammable, very slick yet sticks to the pellets well. It’s also clear and clean and not particularly messy.

No no no verdecktjaeger…It is really hard to show
emotion or lack thereof in print…I appreciate the input…
Was just saying that I am leaving the final conclusion to the individual..No trying to prove anything one way or the other..

I have used Break Free and Hornady dry lube…Couldn’t
really tell the difference between the 2 but for me, I shoot
Break Free wet lubed pellets now. Not soaked with lube just
lightly coated….

This is my deal….I am not out to sway anyone’s opinion
or impress anyone with the results….At points in time, I
think of things that for me, would make shooting just a little more
interesting and possibly informative at the same time.
Instead of keeping it all to myself, I try as best I can
(without making it some tedious year long research project)
to post all of the information that I obtain in the process
and put it out there for interpretation…..That way anyone and
everyone can decide what they want to do with the information provided….
At the same time I get feedback that allows me to expand on
what I am trying to achieve and an education of things that I never thought to ask….
Some of these trial and error experiments are
things that no one has thought of doing or things they done but with
a different gun, pellet, pressure, yadda yadda yadda.
Or maybe things they have done and nobody else ever gets any benifit from it..
If any of the experiments that I have done are repeats…
TOO STINKINNNNNNN BAAAAAADDD! Just kidding….
I just don’t see doing all of this stuff without disclosing
it to the forum. Seem like it would be a waist just to keep
it to myself…..YA HEARD?

Question: Is lubed better than un-lubed?
Hypothesis: Lubed IS better than un-lubed.
Test:
- a) Baseline results through quantitative sample size.
b) Test plan #1 & return to baseline.
c) Test plan #2 & return to baseline.
d) Test plan “n” & return to baseline.
Analyze: Draw conclusions from tests.
Communication: Provide all of the above AND any documentation,
verifiable/relevant results, etc…

SoooooOOoooo… Given the statements and results to date, are we all in
agreement on lubbing up? (Ohh baby, ohh…) 😆
Butt seriously (maybe not…) what are the suggested lubricants? Several
are mentioned throughout the thread. Are any just flat-out better than the
field? inquiring minds…
He should shoot groups unlubed to establish consistent results, then shoot groups with a given batch of lubed pellets, then clean the barrel thoroughly to remove that particular lube, shoot clean pellets through it to season it back up and test another batch of different lubed pellets…

Every shot was aimed at the black dot near the corresponding group using the 1st mildot below the cross hair..I was aiming high to try to hit the dot for Buzzcat…..lol…I got a piece of one and almost dead centered one other. 😯
To give you a frame of reference, the first dot (upper left) has a .285″ diameter.
The biggest reason that I don’t adjust the scope is because different weight pellets have different POI and I would be chasing a ghost trying to adjust the scope for each different pellet wieght….
I am still getting some flyers that I could swear are not my fault but….
0mph wind today so these results are as accurate as I can make them….
Hornady dry lube vs Break Free wet lube with 2 different weight pellets….
These were all shot on one fill so the last shots were at a different psi than the first..That has to be taken into consideration….I started at 2,700psi with PW 10/10 stock talon hammer..Ending psi was 2,000..That’s approx 47 shots using the same POA. If the math works (I don’t think quite does) that would be approx 53 psi per shot….So you can calculate an approx pressure range for each group.
Inconlcusive as to which lube/pellet is hands down better, either way you’re gonna hit what your hunting!

Post some pictures of those test you are doing..I am a little confused as to exactly how to do it…..
If you are getting messy pulling pellets from the tin then you are using too much lube…
Nothing wrong with shooting pellets straight from the tin….Lead is somewhat of a lubricate anyway…

you hould try unlubed first with a couple ofe sight in shots then move to lubed to realy test the diference because when its the other way around the barel begins to dry out almoust like taking the guns first shots before you get acuracy ived tride lubed and they work but it gets messy now just from the tin and get very good groups straight from the tin

The bull dot is right under the caliper upper left…
In other words I missed low and right…
And yes I am pretty proud of this group……

These 2 groups are Beeman Kodiak 21.4gr…I figured I would try them too….Lubed with Break Free…Fill psi 2,800.
Those 2 wild flyers were definately not my fault…. 😳
It really seems that my Condor is backwards…It seems the lighter the pellet the tighter the groups….The good thing is that I could hunt with any one of the 3 and have a reasonable chance of success…..

I think it is really tough to say which lube works best because there is probably a very small different. Maybe too small to see in shooting tests…I think it is more of a question about whether to lube or not….And there maybe be some gun setups that work better without lube but if those guys shooting dry pellets don’t try lubed they will never know…to each his own…
