Using a condor on MEDIUM power; Can it be done?
Hello guys, a good friend of mine recently purchased a .22 cal. condor, and even tho the rifle performs well at high power, filling to 2800psi, PW at 10, shooting barracudas with accuracy for about 25 shots, my friend would like to also use the rifle on medium power for long range plinking, bird hunting, etc. His idea is to shoot CPs (or similar weight pellets), at arround 950fps.
He fills to 2800psi, sets the PW at arround 5 and starts shooting, first 10 shots or so are wonderfull, but then power begins to go up, and accuracy goes out the window, eventually (a few shots later) even with the PW set at zero, all shots are going supersonic! and he cant hit anything.
Is there a way to use a condor for consistently shooting at medium power, like CPs in the 900fps range?

this remindes me that tom gaylord said he was going to look into this (power incressing as pressure droped) when he did his review of the condor about six months ago. i think it might have been in the blog reply. i am still waiting!!!! π he acted like he had know idea the gun did this, makes me wonder if he ever shot a condor?????
sorry i got of on a gaylord rant. π³
i think my friend will end up getting the Talon tank, as hes not much into changin parts of the rifle, but ill relay your sugestion to him, thanks.
As for Mr, GaylordΒ΄s review into “Power Vs Presure in condors”, i think i can take a pretty accurate guess on what happened…
he did the tests, but since the results probably spoke bad for the rifle, he “forgot” to publish his findings. π
Pyramyd and gaylord are allways covering up the problems with this guns. Just as the “video review” of the condor from the “airgun reporter”, the second one where he reviews the talon and the condor. You noticed how he sais he fills the gun to 2800psi instead of the advertised 3000 because “That was the setting on the compresor he used, and he dint want to mess with the settings” LMFAO!!!!!! Had he filled to 3000psi, the so called “review” would have to mention the gun probably not shooting hard for the first shots.
Might try useing CO2. The fill pressure is only 1800 PSI so your velocity is lower and you can get a ton of shots off of one 20 OZ tank.
i have a .22 condor and have diffrent valve stems, a high power(eun jin 950 fps) and lower power one (cp’s 825 fps) the top hat setting on both top hats are diffrent and i just use a screw driver with air in the tank to pop out the valve put in the one. i want and shot the gun 2 to 3 times to set the stem in. this way i am not always adjusting the top hat. i think the stem top hat and grub screws cost around 20 bucks from air force. i keep the power ajuster on 10 with stock weight hammer and everything works great for me. air forces stock tophat is out way to far.

Thanks again for all your help fellas.
Love my Talon SS:
If he gets a lighter hammer, or removes the hammer weight, the deal is the same as turning down the th, he wont be able to use it at high power at all.
Remember he wants to use it both at mid AND high power.
maw:
i havent measured the th (i no longer have the proper tools to do it), but my understanding is that it is at factory setting. the owner has not modded or adjusted anything on the rifle since he got it, it is 100% stock, the only things that have been done to it (by me) are lubricating the breech orings and valve stem with a little silicone grease.

so you can use yours at mid power? do you adjust the PW while shooting (eg you start at 5 and end up at 0)?
My friend left the rifle with me for further testing, and yesterday i spent all day shooting with it.
Heres the best i could do to use it at mid power…
I filled it to 2700psi, set the PW at 5 and started shooting CPs at a target set at aprox 60 yards. After a few (like 10 or so) shots, i noticed power increase because POI was climing, so i reduced PW to 4, a few shots went more or less into the previous POI, then it went up again, so i turned PW to 3. I kept repeating this (shooting a till POI climed, then lowering PW) till i ran out of PW to adjust (lowest setting), kept shooting at lowest setting and POI kept climing and climing, till accuracy began to deteriorate.
I checked the presure on the tank and it was 1900psi.
Shot count thru this “experiment” was about 50 shots, wich is very well, except that in real shooting conditions, the rifle would be completely unreliable, because POI keeps going up untill you turn down the PW. In other words, it is inaccurate, you dont know where your POI is on the vertical plane.
What you think guys?
is there something else i can try? or do i tell him “Get a Talon tank, or get another gun!”?
yes my rifle does sustain its mid power thru out the entire time. i use a 2700 psi fill and shoot down to 2000 psi at times. the only difference is my rifle becomes less powerful as my psi reduces from 2700 to 2000. did you try contacting the place your buddy got it from?? where did he get it?
what is the tophat set at?
I have a .20 caliber, at 2400psi., I thought I’d see if my pw. really worked or not, so I put it on zero and put a jsb 13.5 gr. in and it shot at 846fps., so I think maybe something is wrong with the gun. my th. is set at .078, but as you know not every gun is set the same.
He could instead get a lighter Hammer.
Thanks for your replys guys.
maw; the pw it this rifle behaves exactly like that. when presure is above about 2500psi it actually works, but as soon as presure goes below that number, it becames practically useless. π
Love my Talon SS; getting a non “hi-flow” tank sounds like a good idea. yesterday i told him about getting a stardard Talon / Talon SS tank. he wasnt too happy about having to drop over 100 bucks for something the rifle shoud do out of the box but i guess hes going to have to.
271867: The rifle is brand new, and it does work ok at high power, and it does shoot ok at mid power, but only for a few shots, then it starts going up.
Does your rifle sustain mid power thru all its air load? what fill presure do you use?
Anyone have some numbers on a condor using a talon tank and shooting CP2? shots strings, fill presures, etc?
something must be wrong with your friends rifle. i have a condor and i can shoot at mid and high power.power wheel at 6 i shoot kodiaks at 850 to 900 fps and power wheel at 12 1000 to 1050 fps, my rifle is stock. i only heard of a condor shooting super sonic at a low setting when the spring and hammer are modded
My pw. does seem to work at the high pressure end but it seems to start dropping off after 6-10 shots, I don’t ussaully use 14 gr. pellets. By dropping off I mean the pw. working towards useless.
He can always get the micro meter tank. http://airforceairguns.com/sparetank.html

Thanks, i sugested that to him, but hes right asserting that if he does that, then he wont be able to use it at high power with barracudas and eunjins. He wanted to use it at both high and mid power.
thanks for your reply. Ill tell him, but i doubt he will be willing to drop more money on this thing. he bought it thinking the gun could do this (mid power) “out of the box”.

Benzin,
I can atest that is all the pressure he had available to him for testing at the time. I had talked to him before he filmed and we talked about the fill pressure and his video. He just did not have 3k psi to pull from. Paul is a good guy and represented the gun fairly.
Gaylord on the other hand….. π π π π π π π
