virgin glock 17
well wife could prove we have been in CA long enough, so while i was in denmark she went and bought us a glock 17 which is full size 9mm for those not into the glock models i know i wasnt 3 months ago
we chose 9mm for several reasons
1 ammo is pretty cheap, compared to the larger calibers
2 grip is smaller than larger calibers, wife has very small hands and therefor has trouble holding pistols with fat grips
3 we are both inexperienced with handguns, and the 9mm is not as intimidating as the larger more powerfull.
glock was the choise when we asked around…we (I) wanted something reliabel, easy….glock certainly fits the bill
went to the range to rent one….and we liked it….also tried an XD40(i forget the makers namer ), what a pice of crap compared to the glock, might have been just that one, old and worn out rental….but it kept jamming up constantly….and we saw no accuracy with it.
any back to the glock….yesterday was the first time we had it out…i went to wallmart and grabbed a box of all the different ammo they had (blaser, remington, winchester)
and off to the range after she dropped her mom off at the airport….very excited, i loaded the mags with the plastic loader that came with the gun…ohh man when we rented that was not given to us and the 9th and 10th round was a thumb buster to get into the magazine, with the speed loader it was a breese, laid the 2 mags and pistol on the range table and told wife to give it a go
blam 1 shot at 12 feet right in the black….then she was shooting low for the next 3-4 shots and then it failed to eject…cleared the chamber, and sent her on the way….then it jammed, cleared it…2 more shots and it did it again…i wrote it off to that the gun is brand new and needed to settle in, or maybe the cheap ammo. more on that later….
next mag and it was my turn, 10 shots later which was over pretty fast, about 20 seconds keeping in line with the 2 seconds the range requires between shots for the most….2 hit outside in the 8 ring….rest was 9 and 10 ringers….no misfeeds no malfucktions
wifes turn, and it started to fuck up again (or rather she did) one shell failed to eject and turned around and the next cartridge actually got pushed into it….then it would only feed the round half, lige the casing edge got caught on something…..she gave up….i then took the mags she had been using, and filled it and fired 10 rounds….working perfectly, and then the next mag to eliminate that its not the mags fault.
gun is working just fine, its human error at fault here
when i was shooting it it was doing fine, when she was shooting it…not so….i told her to change grip, try to stiffen her arms a little more or a little less trying to see what was causing it….turns out sloppy wrists/arms as soon as she locked her elbows it was fine…not good for accuracy and the carteledge in her arms….but hey she now knew what was going wrong…and got shooting just fine….well except that after i told her not to let go of the trigger all the way she twice double rapid fired, resulting in range master complaining, but it was a fair mistake and he understood…funny enough too booths over theres was some serious rapid firing going on…like 10 shots in 3 secs…which the range master never said anything about….however when i was shooting with 2 second intervals he told me slow it down just a bit….must have been cops or something that was rapid firing…those bastards get away with everything
my self found that when i did what the instructor had told me i would shoot way low….as soon as i loosened up and got comfortable i was shooting right where i was aiming, but our range hour(about 90 minutes) was up. i had bought 300 rounds…there was 75 left when we went home hehe
shooting handguns surely is something totally different, very challinging i think, im used to be very accurate with my airgun rifles….and the find that i have trouble with a simple 9mm at 12-15 feet lol shooting groups of several inches, but man it is fun

can someone recomend a pair of good shooting glasses for a guy with glasses ? range master was not entirely ok with my regular narrow glasses but said it was for my own safety so he wouldnt keep me from shooting…but then agian a more anal range master might say no alltogether.

have her lock her right elbow so all the recoil is in the wrist, it defiantly looks as if the the pistol is jumping around too much.
If you hold an auto loading pistol with your thumb behind the slide, the slide will come back and hit your thumb with enough force to cause an injury. Put your left thumb across the top of your right thumb.

The trigger pull on the Glock is so long its hard to not pull your shot. You have to train yourself to hold the target through the whole pull. The jamming/cycling probs you were seeing are due to the wrist being to limp. The stance I suggested where you pull with the offhand will get rid of allot of that.
Have her learn in stages, dont worry about accuracy until she is comfortable with her stance and hold. Get some of those plastic caps you can put in the gun so you can dry fire it without stressing the gun. She can work on pulling through that long trigger pull. Have her aim at a target and then very slowly pull through the trigger while keeping it on target the entire time. When the trigger snaps she should still be on target. You can get a trigger spring mod that will reduce the pull weight if its a problem. the length of pull is still there but it reduces it allot. Is she afraid of the gun at all? That is a big thing right there and sometimes very hard to overcome.
no rust on the stainless, just some dust looking that way. after I saw the pic load I had too check myself 😳

thanks shadoh, i will let her read the post, i think i gotta get a gas blowback softair gun so she can practice a little at home….also a nice way when guests arrive and i want to take them shooting to just familiarize them with a toy before doing the real deal….
that opening and closing of the marksman deluxe pneumatic airgun i got is no good….fine training for me but its not a gun you want to fire 50 shots with imho
i just ordered a .22lr kit for the glock, that way she can get a lot of trigger time for cheap money 300 bucks including shipping and 3 mags, had to call freaking 16 shops to find one that actually sai they had it in stock…cool thing is no ffl needed….and all you d is exchaging mags and slide and your good to go
Lama your dead on with your comment….i was thinking of going back to wallmart agian today and get some more 9mm ammo….i saw that sportsmaguide had some magtech ammo…1000 rounds for 220 bucks…25 cents a shot(with shipping)…thats not too bad….of course wallmart is 26 cents for the selection i got yesterday
the wrapping thumb is what she used when it would half load or jam…i got her to put thumb under as i think i saw her thumb touching the slide as she shot, because her fingers are so short that her left thumb is allmost vertical(btw is that rust on the revolver i see ?)
im not sure the glock is going to be her favorite….a revolver might be the way to go, she was dead accurate with it in .38sp which i found a nice little load to shoot….of course the 357 is more manly, and with the 6″ barrel the recoil was much much better than the glock.
the couple in the booth the the left of us….2 small asian women, was shooting the g19…and the supossedly there to the the other was shooting just as crappy groups as my wife….
and the couple to the right was shooting a sig something in a small caliper possibly a .22 converstion too, and she was all over the place as well….
so i guess she just has to get some trigger time…i saw her jerking the pistol in anticipation which is not good either, the .22 kit will be nice for cheap pratice and general plinking, plus it will give us the trigger training we need.
Just looked it up the web. What I described is almost identical to the modified Weaver stance. If you do a search for that there are tons of pics and descriptions available.

As well as good hand placement you might have her try a different stance. It look like she had her body parallel to the target with both arms and shoulders squared up as well. Many folks use this stance but its not my favorite.
If she is right handed you might try this stance. With her right arm/hand holding the gun have her extend that arm so that it is almost straight and locked. Elbow can be very slightly bent. Now swing that arm to the left to somewhere between 10 and 11 o’clock. Then have her bring her left hand up and set the bottom of the gun in the heel of her palm of her left hand. When she closes her left hand it should wrap around the front of her right hand and her thumb should overlap her other thumb. If her hands are small her left hand will be more in front of the grip than under it.
This stance allows you to lock your right arm and your left arm supports it. All movement of the gun is done through your right arms shoulder. Your left arm/hand only supports the gun. I actually like to pull back on my left hand into my locked right arm. By pulling back with your left hand it greatly reduces muzzle flip and really locks the gun in tight but still allows complete freedom to move the gun around. Give it a try.
This will require you to change how you line up your body on the target. Your body will now be at an angle to your target and not square on. This will help her keep from rocking back on her heals when she fires the gun. It also presents a smaller target to your attacker/rabbit/whatever. Those rabbits are crack shots and anything you can do give them a smaller target is a good idea.
Using the same stance all the time is just as important as a good cheek weld on a rifle. Once she finds something that works for her stick with it.
Isn’t it funny, after you get your new gun and shoot it a few times, all you can think is, I’m going to need more ammo….

Nice gun. Glocks are cool. I got to play with one at the range the other day, for letting him shoot my blaser some. Both cool guns.

thansk for all the nice tips and suggestions…..i made a full lenght video of what was recordet, i figure if you guys can tell so much from that short first clip….then with this you should be able to tell alot more….theres also a slowmo clip in there, unfortunatly the light cituation on the range is far from perfect, so i had to brighten up the clip quite a bit
