what caliber would suit me best?
hey guys, i am from the uk and am asking you what calibre would be best for me.
i have an fac lisence and .177 ammo is alot cheaper than .22
i will be pureley hunting out to long ranges so i was thinking about a .177 for the flat trajectory but i’ve heard that it uses alot of air.
howmany shots could i expect shooting .177 at 22 ft/lbs and a .22 at 35 ft/lbs

FYI With 177 Eun Jin Korean heavies I hit way under supersonic around 740 fps and get about 20 plus FPE at the muzzle… I take down mid to large sized igunas on a vital shot to ribs or head. The heavies shoot flat to about 44 yards. .22 is more optimal for the larger ones due to wound channel size on non full vital area hits and anchor the game better. I plan to give some .177 predators a shot to see how they might increase speed and wound channel effect with a flatter trajectory. .22 is a better caliber due to more variety of pellet weights and better air effciency due to larger bore size but I dig .177 for my setup.
what he is saying though is that about 20fpe is max with a .177 because they are almost supersonic at that power level but a .22 can easily hit 55-60 fpe without becoming supersonic.
So what calibre would i see more of a power increase .177 or .22?
20 fpe would be accpetable in .177 and 30 fpe in .22
what would use more air?

EDIT: machinist, what fpe are you hitting with .177 and for howmany shots?
I do it in a lathe. Centre the barrel on the bore within 0.01mm runout using a 4jaw-chuck. Then using a very fine internal turningtool turn away the rifling so that it just catches the pellet when inserted in the bore. Put a 30degree bevel at the end to lead in the pellet skirt. Then pollish with 1200 grid sandpaper.
The fast method is use a conical reamer.

Thanks guys, I plan on getting any model that gunpower makes, then buying a 24″ BSA barrel, Ill first try it at 24″ and if I feel it is too long then I will cut it down.
How do you chamber the barrel?

12″ barrel will give you the power you require with the modded valve but your shot count will be way low. 10-20 odd at the most I’d say allthough with the O ring modded valve you may get fractionally better SPC. Accuracy Is shite with the 12″ barrel too. I’ve tried a couple and non have been really accurate. Even at close range they weren’t up too much. I was wondering what a 12-15″ choked BSA barrel would do. Anyone tried one, what was accuracy like?
LW aint bad. You just have to make shure you have one with choke. The bore is pretty big so you need the choke to get them well seated in the rifling. crow magnums in .25 are just plain loose in a LW except fo the choke part.
BSA is always choked and the bore is pretty tight. So chambering the barrel is a must if you don’t want a sore thumb. But it shoots practically every pellet quite well!

REALLY! I thought that LW was like the rolls royce of barrels. However good news to me because BSA is cheaper 🙂

24” Doesn’t have to be more accurate! Accuracy is dependend on the last 2″ of the barrel. It’s just the 24″ will give you a bit more fps with the same valve. But it also increases locktime a bit, so more time for you to pull the shot!
Just my 2 cents. I have had 24″ barrels that shoot super and 18″ that shoot crap. It’s all in quality. But I prefer BSA above LW anyday!

The barrel length is a personal thing and depends on where and how you and shooting.
I do not have any wooded areas so I went 24″ with a silencer. My shooting is long distance so this barrel give better accuracy and higher shot count.

How good would a 20″ barrel be? A better comprimise for length and power?

i know people have drilled them out. give the grub screw under the fore amr grip a wack with something semi pointed (the type of thing used to make an imprint before drilling into somthing).
that should soften up the lock tight but it aint something that i would do as i do not believe i would do the best job.
i agree with the post from marc about the 24″ barrel and i have one so i know what he is saying makes sence. however if you a doing prone shooting from a set location it nice to have.

So an 18″ barrel then, seems reasonable. Also How easy would getting past the anti tamper be? Maybe just pressing a torx bit into the rounded barrel geub screws would let me get them out?

For hunting upto 70 yards I’d recommend a stealth tuned to 30 ft.lbs. With a 18″barrel. Crawling around bushes with a 24″ barrel with silencer isn’t handy. And a 16grain jsb pellet still carie 12 ft.lbs at a 100yards.
BSA barrels can be had as spare S10 barrels wich run around 80 pounds.
My stealth is setup for 30ft.lbs with a 18″bsa barrel and does about 55 shots. I have a .25 setup(BSA barrel to) that gets 35 to 40 shots at 55ft.lbs. But that is massive overkill for hunting! Still waiting for the 25,4grain .25jsb pellets as baracuda pellets just pass through and don’t deform much at these power level. Also the lighter pellets will give a bit less power about 45ftlbs but will up shotcount!
Also JSB are a bit softer and deform much more.

My 18″ .177 is shooting 22 FPE with CPH’s at 972 fps .. accuracy is awesome and I use it regularly for squirrel hunting.
I am getting 12 shots before the velocity drops off and that is plenty for a mornings squirrel hunt … plus I carry my CF bottle in the car just in case I get into a heated battle one morning 😀
