Which .308 rifle
Ever since I shot that .30-06 at the range, I want one really bad 8) I did a little bit of studying and it looked like the majority of people said that .308 is a more accurate round than .30-06, is this true? It is also a lot more common.
I have been mostly looking at these two rifles

does anybody have experience with either of these? Any other rifles I should look at instead?

AI…is that Ackley Improved? P.O. Ackley was a cartridge designer, or a wildcater. He “improved” several if not many cartridges…although I can’t think of them right off hand.
Personally, for a .308, I like the M-1A. I never thought of shootng a rabbit at 600 yards.
You ever consider .300 Winchester Magnum? .308 goes tink when it hits a steel target at 400 yards whereas the .300 Win Mag goes KLANK! Just a thought.

I think he is looking for that feeling of power that comes with a 308. The noise and feeling of recoil let you know your sending some real force downrange.
If i thought he was interested in something smaller I would have pressed him to buy my xr-100. 😛 (oh, maybe I am self centered… 😆 )
Bikin, I’ve seen a few remington xr-100’s like mine but in 308 caliber. Might be worth looking into. If you don’t mind the single shot, they are super accurate guns and have a great trigger.
What does the AI mean?
If you want some thng like your talking about(?) you might look at a 223 AI

Sounds like I am heading in the right direction then. Where in cali do you go to do LONG range shots? I have been to the Angeles Shooting range off osborne, but it only goes out to 700 yards.
you have a lot of choices with a 2000 dollar budget. All rifles mentioned above are exceptional. If you can shoot well then 600 yrd is not hard for the .308. Even the little .223 zaps things out further than that on a calm day.
With my reloads, i have hit bowling pins at over 600 yrds with my factory Remington 700 in .308. And steel plates out further than that.
Although it matters how accurate your rifle is at long range, what matters more is how accurate are you?
A surprising amount of shooters cant hit anything longer than 250 yards, even with sub-MOA rifles.
Granted, once you learn the rifle and its ability, your range can be stretched.
If you hand load, you can basically choose anything you want and make loads that work.
Ive shot at extended range with loads from the .17hmr to a .340 Weatherby.
My favorites turned out to be .284 and .264 calibers; the game was rock chucks.
Ive only owned one 30-06, a post-64 Model 70 Winchester. That rifle shot anything I loaded into it very well. 110 gr round nose bullets were very fun to shoot. I could saw down trees with them.
The military chose the .308 for a good reason. Very efficient and accurate. With todays bullets and powders available, you should be able to create 1/4MOA loads if you’re patient enough.
Wasn’t your blazer like 3k? that is a little more than I have right now, I am limited to $2000.
Are we talking cottontail or jackrabbit?
I’ve shot my xr-100 at 600 yards, and gotten 3 and 4 inch groups. So I don’t think hitting a rabbit is impossible. What you do need, is one heck of an accurate rifle. 🙂
I am really not sure what will be that accurate that far out. I’m sure it is possible, but you never see any reviews of true long range shooting. Everyone’s groups are at 100 yards.
I’d say your best bet would be a precision rifle. If you don’t want to drop that kind of money, get a very nice varmint rifle. And be sure to put very good glass on it.
Find something that has lots of reports of it being a sub .5moa gun at 100 yards, and it will hopefully be accurate enough at 600 yards. A kill zone on a cottontail is probably 4″ up and down, so if it keeps up with the .5 moa out to farther ranges, it should be accurate enough.
I talked to a guy with a blaser lrs2 like mine in 6mmbr who consistantly shot .5″ groups at 300 yards. 😛 That’d be accurate enough. 😆
Sako rifles are also very, very accurate.
Small game hunting at extreme ranges. I have looked at and shot some of the small caliber varmint round, and it just doesn’t appeal to me at all. Rabbits and stuff at like 600 yards is what I am thinking, or am I insane? I don’t think shot placement on small things with a .308 is crucial, if it is, then I am gonna need one hell of an accurate gun.
.308 is a very accurate round. It really doesn’t have much over the 30-06 in terms of how accurate it can be, but what it does have are many more choices for ammo and rifles in the caliber. So it is easier to find an accurate combination.
What exactly are you looking for in the rifle? I mean, do you want something lower on the price range, or an ultra high grade rifle?
What I would really reccomend is a blaser, like mine, because it’s one of the most amazing rifles I have ever shot. Or you could get an accuracy international rifle, again, awesome guns.
For lower price guns, the tikkas are really nice. A 700 police with some trigger work is also a great rifle. It is really the military’s m24 with a different name. It’ll be a .5moa gun easy from the factory.

I’d say go with the .338 lapua. Or 50 bmg. That’ll reach out. And no, the rabbit will not survive. Don’t have to worry about shot placement either. Probably don’t have to really hit it, just hit near it and that’ll do the trick. 😀
