Bad Accuracy After Barrel Swap
Hi,
I bought a Talon SS in .177 and I also got a .22 barrel for it.
My question for you is, what is the rubber disk that came with the spare barrel and how is it properly installed with it?
When I was swapping barrels the old black rubber disk fell out with the barrel. Since the change neither barrel is holding accuracy.
My .177 barrel was holding dime sized groups at 45 yards, and now it is hardly holding a 2.5 inch group at 45 yards,
and the same goes with the .22 barrel. I KNOW these are accurate rifles, so could someone please give me some DETAILED
instructions on how to change a barrel properly in case I have done it wrong?
I have watched the instructional DVD that came with the gun a few times and checked the barrel changing section of it
to double check my work, but I seen nothing (or maybe I missed it) on that small rubber disk.
Also, when I do get a decent 1 inch 5 shot group, it will almost always start shooting strays and the groups open back up to
2 or 3 inches regardless of any pellet I use. This has only been happening after the barrel change, with both the .177 and .22 barrel.
The groups tighten up at 10 yards, but the farther away the worse it gets. At 60 yards I got the same results as posted above.
Good 5 shot group, and then strays and 2 or 3 inch groups start happening. The gun is showing me potential, but it’s not sustaining
even though I know the gun can.

.22 Kodiak 21.14 GR

.22 JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy 18.13
.22 JSB Diabolo Exact 14.3 GR
.177 RWS Superpoint 8.2 GR
.177 Crosman Destroyers I think around 8 GR
PS: Is the Talon SS Weatherproof? I don’t want to get caught in bad weather during a hunt and walk out of the woods with a knackered gun.

I’ve never shot more than 20 shots before a refill so I can’t give an accurate answer on how many shots I can get befor I get a poi shift.
That is pretty lousy shot count
400cc tank should give more like 100 shots per fill
Something very wrong with your setup
I get about 20 accurate shots with my .177 barrel filling around 2700 to 2800 psi. I have never shot more than 20 shots off of a fill though.
I do not have an o-ring behind the hat. I put the power wheel on 0 and shot a few rounds off with CO2 and other than lobbing them .22’s out of the barrel slow enough to catch them in my teeth, I didn’t notice much of any difference.
Where do you live, I have a chrono, if you live close enough you can use it. Did you check your scope, I had issues like that when I had a bad scope and I was swapping between my .22 and ,25 barrel.
What pressure do you fill to and how many shots do you get? Trying to figure out if your rifle isn’t running too hot. Maybe try bringing the velocity down by quite a bit and see if that makes a difference. Not sure if you have an o’ring behind the tophat, if not fit one or else try setting the tophat to get your velocity down. If you have an o’ring, set the tophat so that you can just fit a bussiness card between the 2-just a guideline.
Just one more thought that has come up, would there be a possibility of lead deposits in the barrel. If you knew at what velocity you’re shooting at now, it would supply us with some more info.
I desperately need a chronograph. I have tried about a dozen different pellets in the .22 and all the same results. JSB’s 14.3, 15.9, and 18.1 GR.
I also believe it is an inconsistency issue with airflow. Been saving up the cash for a chrono.
Re. the lubed pellets, there was no dieselinng. I used a wax based lube, once its dried you can shoot them without worries of dieseliing. Something else I think might be the cause of the inaccuracy is a very inconsistent air flow-but that should show on your .177 group as well. Have you tried different pellets in .22? Your barrel might prefer another ammo brand.
Just one more thought that has come up, would there be a possibility of lead deposits in the barrel. If you knew at what velocity you’re shooting at now, it would supply us with some more info.
Picture on left is a 5 shot group with the .22 barrel. PW on 0
Picture on the right is of 2 groups with the .177 barrel and the PW on 4. The top is a 5 shot group, and the bottom is a 10 shot group with a flier. I stuck my zippo next to the .22 group for size comparison. All groups shot at 20 yards from a bench.
Repeat with .177 barrel…..
Took 5 shots with Kodiaks at 20 yards, and the group is about an inch. PW at 0.
My mistake..thought you went to a 18″
Hey bud, I have a 12″ .22 barrel. I like the “fit in the backpack” kind of feel to the gun. I’ll dial that power wheel all the way to 0 and see what happens. I had it on 2 today and I might as well have been shooting a shotgun. And yes. I can shoot 1″ at 50 yards with that .177 barrel. I get the tripod out tomo and see if I can get a better shot of that muzzle.
I’m no expert, and although the above is a good pic. I still can’t see the crown. Is there a crown?
Another thought:
Re cap: The 12″ .177 barrel shoots great. The 18″ .22 stinks.
Have you tried turning your power wheel ALL the way down when shooting the .22. I’m thinking your shooting the .177 at the 850-900fps range..the accuracy zone. I know it sounds counterintuitive but when you go from a smaller barrel to a larger..the larger is more efficient. It actually takes less air force to send that .22 down the barrel.
Since you also went from a 12″ to an 18″, you also picked up somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-90 fps just from the longer barrel.
A simple test would be to shoot those .22 pellets slow..real slow..slow enough that you can see them. Turn the pw all the way down..put a washer behind the top hat..whatever it takes. See if the groups get better.
Ok, I ran a kodiak pellet through the barrel with a cleaning rod, and it only got tighter around the muzzle. I would suspect that to be normal as it’s a “Choked” barrel? All bushings and frame set screws are quite snug. Here are the requested pics of the muzzle and of the pellet after being pushed through the barrel.
I’ll give that heavy lubing a try. Did you encounter any Dieseling?
