Q:

.25 Rifle build

I’ve decided to build a .25 rifle based around the Buckley bottle gun, mainly since I had a bottle left over from my talon days.

This is going to be my rock chuck gun, so power and accuracy are primary goals, hoping to push some of the mr hollowpoint pills to good velocity.

shooting will be done from rock jacks at ranges from 40 to 75+ yards.

I ordered a .25 LW barrel from tim1 and some alum. from online metals

I intend to shroud it ala marauder and hope to keep the noise down to a reasonable level

got a start on the receiver today, this will probably take way to long to complete (20 month old daughter, work, wife, starting school again, blah blah) but I will document it here as I make progress.

New Shop! oops forgot to secure the mill be fore using it, boy do they get moving 🙂

pocket milling, slow ramp into work… with a suprise

not sure exactly what happened, guessing the depth of cut was just too shallow for that speed (same speed as on the previous pocket .0305 vs .05)

Got the other side done today

used a .25″ ball mill this time, 7% step over at 25 ipm

well it seems the putting around with the GIBs and other adjustments paid off.
Was able to finish the roughing pass last night and the finish pass today, well on one side anyway.

As I was setting up for the roughing pass I notice something odd about the end mill, it’s a new 3 flute HSS mill that I had just gotten, I noticed that one of the blades looked odd, closer look – it was either broken or mis formed, since I’m only milling 6061 and hadn’t dropped it or ran it into the vice I can only assume it was mis formed.
I check the rest of the new end mills I had gotten and they seem to be fine.

The roughing pass was not the most efficient, but I was having lots of issues and it seem to wok the best, though for the other side I think I will try the most efficient way again but reduce the DOC some more, we’ll see.

I also should have used a smalled ball mill for the finish pass, but I’m kinda digging the finish I got from the larger one 😎

So, then, I am very impressed with the gibs on this machine and the feel of the table too, i’ll report back in later after I do some work and things start to wear in…

Funny, I looked up the spelling, a ‘gib’ is also a castrated male ferret… 😕 😆

Sorry for the silly questions. I just ran the Alliant full size mill that was already setup a while ago and never really understood the terminology properly. I just pulled the ‘one shot’ lube system when I was told…

One of these days I may have the balls to make a high pressure air rifle… Until then it’s up to you guys to show me the way. 😆 Nice work!!!

Sorry for the silly questions. I just ran the Alliant full size mill that was already setup a while ago and never really understood the terminology properly. I just pulled the ‘one shot’ lube system when I was told…

I can tell you on my new G0704 the table movement is really nice but the backlash is a bit out of control. I managed to tune the front and back backlash to 0.002″ or less on the handle dial, but I can’t get the right and left under around 0.006″ on the dial… I may need to take it apart, clean, lube and reassemble. I don’t thing the control screw (the one the table moves by) has any grease on it from the factory…

Still working on this, creating the parts in solid works, had to get some new CAM software and fighting the X2.

have about a dozen version of gcode for the receiver – all variations on DOC-WOC and IPM – trying to get a setup that doesn’t take a month to cut.

Fighting the GIBs as well – trying to get my money handler to free up some bucks for a G0704 😯 😀

probably a ways down the road though, just need to keep tweaking the X2 and get it made

When my machine is on autofeed I keep the vacuum cleaner near the router bit, sucks straight clean.

When you find out what to do with those slivers, let me know. I have been avoiding side miling for exactly that reason, just tooooo many damn splinters to pick out of the machine, out of my fingers, and the clean up off the ground even with vacuum cleaner is not fun.

Finally got the Mill and controller PC all setup – started on the receiver
My cutting speed right now is spindle speed limited – have a new controller that should get me more speed and torque, just need to find the time to install it.
