Air rifle power?
Hello everyone. This is my first post in this forum so I hope you dont flame me for it. Why do many here want to hot rod an air rifle? I have enjoyed air rifles for 35 years or so and I just dont see the point. My reason for enjoying them is because they are quiet, (some more than others) relatively safe, no real long range distance threat or while shooting up in the air at birds and varmits. The diabolo pellet design slows rapidly and is soft to resist ricochet. They are also not accurate at speeds near the sound barrier so why do so many try to make a .22LR out of them? If I need more power or longer range I reach for my .17 HMR. Way more accurate out to 150 yards and more FPE with a 17 grain bullet. I know to each his own but why try to reinvent the wheel. If you want .22 power and the hazards that come with it pick up a .22.

Its a challenge to many, suck as much fp out as one can.
Many want to extend the range limits, more power=longer range shooting.
Just because its fun and we can.
Your PB’s are great guns, but its just not my cup of tea. I think they are in fact limited, the sound without suppressor, the hastle of getting a legal suppressor. The power, way to much for backyard shooting.
Not to diss the guns, its just a diff world, type of shooting.
Today I can tune my gun down to 8 fp’s and pluck pigeons out of the neighbors barn.
Next week I could tune the gun up to 90+ fp and shoot Jerry’s 62grain slugs at 850 fps for 90 fp Yote or chuck hunting. Many have far exceeded this. So these guns can shoot at a similar level as the .22 your talking about.
The AF line of guns are in my opinion the most versitile air guns out there.
You like your pb’s..thats ok, but when was the last time you shot it?

Maybe it sounds like a 62gr 6 ring from a well shrouded, hot rodded Condor? Several folks here pushing 120 fpe or more with the heavy slugs.
Oh and my suppressor isnt a small off the shelf unit but more like an air rifle barrel shroud with baffles. Not all sub sonic ammo is the same either. The Aguila SSS is the best in my rifle for accuracy and noise. All you hear is the firing pin, bullet swoof sound as it passes through the air then the loud bullet impact. Aguila SSS 60 grain 950fps 120 fpe.
Wasnt that done with an automatic and a short barrel? Its was said in a previous post that with the right length barrel and suppressor that all of the exhaust noise could be eliminated or considered equal between guns but the hammer and tank ping will always be louder than the firing pin. At that point its a mute point and you can probably hear your heart beat.

For me, i just love to tinker. I like modifying things. I have also learned over the years that mostly everything FACTORY made can be improved upon. When it comes to airguns, things such as triggers, fps consistency, power, caliber swap, muzzle noise…etc..etc..etc…can be improved up. Then you simply have the aftermarket custom parts that are stronger and better looking than some of the cheesy parts that come factory on the gun. Airguns are about on the same principal as the famed Ruger 10/22…lol
So yeah, in general, if you buy a PB of either rifle or handgun type, there isn’t usually to much MODDING going on (except of course for the guys who buy a Rem 700 and totally gut it out for custom gun), but with airguns, its moreso. And that’s not to say that ALL airguns need improving right off the bat but, with airguns, the options to MOD is much simpler than doing it on a PB. Airguns can be modded by the average Joe and some small parts can be bought locally. But even most of my PB have been MODDED to some degree. Nothing i own is STOCK……..lol.
And as far as the 22 lr subsonic vs airgun quiet thing goes, both of you guys are right. They both are the SAME quiet as far as muzzle DB goes with only the action being the noise maker. But, it takes a GOOD silencer/shroud build non the less. And YES, an airgun action/air-tube/air-bottle normally PINGS much more than a bolt action 22 lr. But a 22 lr firing pin has a slight CLICK to it when it strikes. Sooooooooooooooo…….?????!!!! But lets get serious too, with the muzzle report totally silent, who gives a shit about a little ping or click? We are not military snipers shooting at people and the ping is only noticeable to the guy who has his ear on the gun. Downrange, there is NOT MUCH to be heard. The only noise that the SURROUNDING animals hear is the pellet smacking there buddy in the noggin. It’s a mental thing with us gunners. We simply strive for TOTAL SILENCE (well, not me but most do).
So most of us AREN’T reinventing the wheel. We are improving upon or simply making them our own.

So blue duck. What is it that you claim I dont know what I am talking about? Just cause I am new to the forum doesnt mean that I am new to guns or airguns. 38 years experience and being a competitive shooter is how I back up everything I say. If you read my first post you would know that. I wasnt aware you owned this forum or made the rules for the “Newbies”. So quit your whining and prove me wrong.
I’m not saying that a suppressed .22 running cb loads aren’t quiet as I know they are, but for some noob to come in and start claiming shit he ovisly has no clue about just sits wrong with not only me but many others as well…
as that vid I posted proves what can be done in the air world. not to mention the shroud on that condor ss I built many years ago, I have greatly improved them sense then.
yes powder cost less to get into ’till you factor in the ammo, I was smart enough to buy in mass BULK many years ago and still have a shit load of loads for all my powder guns. the tinkering, experimenting, and learning part of air is most of the fun for me… hence my very healthy p/b collection really only coming out once a year to be gone over, cleaned up a bit and oiled… now a days I keep just two of my pistols ready to go, the rest of what I own leads a very lonely existence these days
This is an interesting subject. I enjoy shooting both, but also think airguns and pb:s cannot readily be compared as apples to apples. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Their uses do sometimes overlap. It’s all good fun.
Having fairly limited experience with modern airguns so far, I’d tend to claim that the suppressed pb:s I own are more quiet with subsonic ammo than the one fully shrouded airgun (Cometa Lynx .22) I have. But I’m eagerly waiting to receive a TSS and to start playing with it. Have a couple of suppressors at the ready, and material to build baffles et al. 🙂
My bolt action .22 lr rifle with a sound suppressor is firing pin impact/bullet impact quiet. Same with my .308 rifle. I have also loaded subsonic ammo to an AK that was the same, with the gas port closed. Gas port open, the bolt cycling was the loudest noise. The right ammo is the key. If you go supersonic, or even transsonic, the suppressor only helps to minimize the muzzle signature. Supersonic bullet flight makes a lot of noise.

They both certainly have their place. I like being able to shoot in my yard with my Talon on CO2. It’s quiet, and has enough power for a flat trajectory, but not enough to dent up a cheap pellet trap.
Unless you have a sound meter and compare a PB and airgun SIDE by SIDE, which is “quiter” is just speculation. The level of sound also depends on where the meter is place in relation to the gun.
In the field, an airgun is limited to the number of shots, unless you carry a pump to refill it. With a PB, it’s onlt limited by the amount of ammo you are carrying.
To me, airgunning is like fly-fishing. I enjoy fly fishing because it is a bit more challenging to master, but still very effective in the right circumstances.
