Q:

Air rifle power?

Hello everyone. This is my first post in this forum so I hope you dont flame me for it. Why do many here want to hot rod an air rifle? I have enjoyed air rifles for 35 years or so and I just dont see the point. My reason for enjoying them is because they are quiet, (some more than others) relatively safe, no real long range distance threat or while shooting up in the air at birds and varmits. The diabolo pellet design slows rapidly and is soft to resist ricochet. They are also not accurate at speeds near the sound barrier so why do so many try to make a .22LR out of them? If I need more power or longer range I reach for my .17 HMR. Way more accurate out to 150 yards and more FPE with a 17 grain bullet. I know to each his own but why try to reinvent the wheel. If you want .22 power and the hazards that come with it pick up a .22.

I can best any subsonnic 22 lr FPE with the same trajectory and do it with accuracy better than 95% of 22 LR rifles.

And if I use EBAY lead, and get a good deal, I can do it at 125 shots per dollar.

And I do it because I can.

Thank you azoutdoorsman. At least one guy on here besides me has the experience with both types of guns to make a comment. All you hear from my .22 PB is the firing pin and bullet impact. The firing pin makes less noise than the hammer in the air rifles and there is no tank ping. I never realized how much noise the bullet made on impact until the gun was completely silent. I designed and built my own silencer for the .22 PB and with the Aguila SSS 60 grains it will one hole group at 50 yards all day long. The Aguila Super Colibri 20 grain makes zero noise but not very accurate from my gun. I think its because the bullet is to far from the lands to get started straight. When I shot benchrest competition my rifles always shot better with the bullets lightly touching the lands.

Not everybody can get a tax stamp though. Also what fpe are the subsonics? I can turn down the power to match one I’m sure and be even quieter.

I often shoot from the kitchen table, out the sliding double doors, at tweet birds or targets out back. While the wife is sleeping 10ft away on the living room couch.

Mine is, yes. As I stated above, you can hear the hammer hit the firing pin, and then a bullet impact. That is the only noise when using subsonic loads.

Well, I believe you. If you say its that quiet..ok.

Perhaps another question is…Do you?

If Yes, then you are lucky if you have the property and not worried about killing a neighbor 1/2 mile away..

If No, then you could with an airgun

Do any of you arguing against a PB with a silencer own a PB with silencer? My Savage MKII .22lr bolt action with a SWR Warlock silencer shooting subsonic rounds is as quiet as any airgun I have used or heard. Bolt gun just has a faint CLICK when the hammer hits the firing pin.

I’m not arguing that airguns aren’t also quiet, but a subsonic round in a PB can be pretty quiet too, as long as the action isn’t making noise (semi-auto).

Cost:
Savage MKII- $200
SWR Warlock- $300
Tax stamp- $200
Total- $700

Cost:
Talon- $500
Shroud- $150ish
Power mods- ???
Tank or pump to refill gun-$300ish
Total- $950+++

The PB is less $ unless you spend a lot on the rifle, which can still be said about an airgun.

Honestly, I like airguns because they are lower power, and can be shot in urban areas. Not only that, but the power is usually adjustable depending on settings, fill charge, changing springs, etc. They are fun to tinker with and tune, which is not really an option with a PB.

hay liberty cap is your powder burner this quiet?

and yes I built the shroud, and moded the gun … in that set up she is spitting out 21 grains at 900

Mr Truffles, I can tell you will fit in just fine here, Welcome.

Your missing the main point, because its fun. I’m a bit of a woods walker small game hunter. Love to go for walk about and squirrel, racoon and bird hunt. The airgun lets me get into places a rimfire would not.

Yes the shotgun, 22, 22-250,,243,270 could all do the job.

But, I don’t want to blast anything with a shotgun, no satisfaction in that.

Its an old guy playing sniper, its sniper type shooting. I don’t want to just hit the target, I want to hit the target between the eye and the ear.

Its much more challenging to hit a Starling at 90+ yards. You have to play the windage and mil-dot game, very rewarding when it works.
As stated above..anyone can shoot a PB or rimfire gun well.
Shooting an Airrifle, forces you to become a SHOOTER!

Big guns vs little guns….

A few days ago we were shooting at a friends house that has a 124 yard backyard. We had targets all set up at 50,60,70,80,90,100 and 110 yards.
I had the Talon(.22 12″barrel in now), and my new Daystate .25, pal had his Mrod and Prod…fun shoot. The Neighbors dog came over to say hello, as did the dogs owner to get her. He saw our setup, ran home to get his brand new guns and join in. All GUN people are good people, he was a nice guy.

The fella had a new .22 and 9mm AR style guns. He was shooting our airguns at the 50 yard targets and hitting dead on. He then tried it with his .22 and 9mm guns, he could not even get on paper. Those guns are nice, but what good are they if you can’t shoot them enough to even sight them in. He left very impressed asking tons of questions about the airguns, I think we have a new convert.

Self proclaimed bad ass? Of course I am just ask me. LOL The purpose for the troll was to find out how passionate air gunners are and what they enjoy about the hobby. I created and own a manufacturing business for 18 years and I fully understand the need for patents on my ideas. Yes I have two in the works for air rifles. One will most likely be granted and the other is not so sure. But hey if AF can get a patent for a sliding breach that was around for 20 years or more before they filled go figure. This forum and the people on it are no different from the forums and people I have dealt with for the past 18 years. Oh and Blue Jay make it worth your while of you have the balls to bet me. My .22 PB against your .25 and any dollar figure you want to put on the table.

I dig reading your post’s hoot. 😆
I would of needed a thesaurus to write that. 😯 shit I had to check my spelling on thesaurus. 😆 😆 😆

Dear Fungus…

You really need to investigate more of our prior posts.

“Silent” in our world is you watching from 50 feet, and the loudest sound you hear is the lead impacting the target.

“Accuracy” is the capability to decide, at 100 meters, which eye to shoot through, and more than a couple forum members would place that shot in the pupil. In the larger bored pcp’s, .30 cal and beyond, the longest accurate distance is not yet documented because that portion of our hobby is simply cost prohibitive for most of us, and getting a slower start than the smaller calibers. The cost of those custom guns would make your eyes water, and your ball sack shrivel.

Did you know that Lewis and Clark documented that their hand-pumped pcp air rifle was the most valuable weapon on their expedition, when impressing the various native tribes they encountered?

Our basic equipment costs several times more than a powder burning rifle, THEN we begin to modify. In return we get near total silence, insane accuracy, custom machined inletted and crowned German barrels, fully adjustable, two stage triggers, and stocks ranging from bullpup tactical, to incredible hand crafted hardwood, fully adjustable, benchrest stocks. The only limit is your pocket book.

We, individually, choose whether to concentrate on accuracy, silence, beauty, functional improvement, power, size, velocity, or any combination of the above. This is done by taking the equipment apart and making it conform to our desires. This is done by imagination, ingenuity, shared knowledge, machinist skills, wood craftsmanship, and more than a small amount of knowledge of physics, compressed gasses, and aerodynamic characteristics of projectiles.

It’s a whole other world of shooting. Most of what we do, and are capable of doing, is simply not understood by the general shooting public. They still think of pcp rifles as “pellet guns”. That’s fine with us.

Stay….and learn, or get angry and leave. None of us really care one way or the other. We respect everyone’s choice on this forum. This isn’t for everyone. Individuals come and go. Some we sorely miss, some we rejoice to see gone.

If you stay, be aware you are in the presence of some highly educated individuals, knowledgeable craftsmen from every walk of life, millionaires and paupers, expert machinists, individuals so gifted with wood they could teach a Hickory limb how to deal cards, and on it goes. Such gifted and talented individuals can be a bit touchy at times.

The moderators rarely intervene in what is said here…although there is zero tolerance on racial issues. We have members of every skin color and nationality you can imagine. We are thrilled to have our former CCCP members join, as they have much to offer, and have been held silent too long. (If only we could get our hands on some of their gear!)

your the dip shit that’s trying to claim, we all know your full of shit so why in the hell would we travel?

if you truly are the self proclaimed bad ass that has two new air guns that are so revolutionary that you feel you need to patent them, and have done the research to warrant your thinking in needing a patent then you already know just how full of shit you are… or your just a fucking troll … either way you’re a full of shit lame

Why do some folks want to hotrod airguns? Answer is simple. Because they do. Why are some of us are republicans and some of us are democrats or independents? Why do some of us like new cars and some of us like to restore classic cars. Why are some people religious and others not. Why do some folks eat meat and others do not? Why do some folks own dogs and others own cats? Etc, etc. WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.

For me, gives me something to do that I enjoy. I own many PB’s. I hunt whatever big game I get a tag for. But hunting season is only 5 months in my state. I’m getting older and don’t enjoy shooting a shoulder jarring big caliber PB for fun. I can afford a high end airgun that drives tacks at long distance or kills a rabbit at 100 yards. What fun is that? Modifyng my airgun to get another fps, or to make it look cool is FUN for ME. But that’s just MY OPINION.

If you’ve got something to do that you enjoy more than hotrodding an air gun, have at it bro.

Bunch of cowards arent you. Bring your arse to my place and I will bet you gun for gun everything I say. Put your money where your mouth is or shut the f up!
